I’m listening in 2024…. Love this song my cousin Julie turned me on to this song when we were kids. When we were kids I feel like we lived on sugar mountain. We were little hippies and loved life, love, rock and roll. Times have changed so much! My cousin has passed away now from cancer and she will be missed. I’m so happy I have the Neil Young memories I shared with her. When I listen she’s still here with me…THANK YOU NEIL YOUNG for allowing me to experience that ❤

I had to change one word or two in the lyrics in the mid 90's. My ex wife had put my eldest boy into foster care. As soon as I found out I drove from Hampshire to Worcestershire. Went in the door of the carers saying "son, grab your things, I've come to take you home. I did.

Wow, the symbolism is unreal. When he sings of ... "feeling part of the scenery, I walked right out of the machinery," his reason for leaving Genesis -- as soon as he says, "grab your things, I've come to take you home," he gets off the bike AND CHANGES DIRECTION -- just as he did when he left Genesis. Climbing up on Solsbury Hill I could see the city light Wind was blowing, time stood still Eagle flew out of the night He was something to observe Came in close, I heard a voice Standing, stretching every nerve Had to listen, had no choice I did not believe the information I just had to trust imagination My heart going boom, boom, boom "Son", he said, "grab your things, I've come to take you home" To keep in silence I resigned My friends would think I was a nut Turning water into wine Open doors would soon be shut So I went from day to day Though my life was in a rut 'Til I thought of what I'll say Which connection I should cut I was feeling part of the scenery I walked right out of the machinery My heart going boom, boom, boom "Hey", he said, "grab your things, I've come to take you home" (Hey, back home) When illusion spin her net I'm never where I want to be And liberty she pirouette When I think that I am free Watched by empty silhouettes Who close their eyes but still can see No one taught them etiquette I will show another me Today I don't need a replacement I'll show them what the smile on my face meant My heart going boom, boom, boom "Hey", I said, "you can keep my things, they've come to take me home"
Wonderful performance. This was one of my elder brother's favourite songs, so we played the studio version in the church as his coffin left the building. So now the lyrics have a personal resonance to his siblings, and bring tears to our eyes when we hear it again. Quentin N Scott: 1959 - 2009 RIP.

I grew up with the song, and although many relate iIt to Peter’s move away from Genesis, the song sure seems to play out the biblical events of the period leading up to, through, and after the crucification of Jesus from the perspective of Jesus. Being betrayed the entire time by those he trusted the most, until God calls him home. I can tie every lyrical line to a biblical event, and I’m by no means highly religious. Does anybody else see it? If Peter had a hidden religious meaning to this song, what a genius to be able to package a biblical story and sell it as mainstream without the masses knowing they were listening to Christian music.

discovered this music a few days ago, I left home (in Brazil) to study in Hungary exactly 3 months now and I am missing home and my family so much, so yesterday when listening to this again it was like a truck hitting me remembering my dear ones far away from me, and I wished hard that someone would took me and tell me to grab my stuff and go back to my family, I would never have imagined that being this far from home would be that hard.... now I'm ok I think, but this song kind of hit me in the face with what I consider important for me now, since I have aways felt that "I'm never where I wanna be". But in the general picture it stills cheer me up with the promise that someday I'll return to my home :)

I played this five times last night almost full blast while packing - we have no near neighbours! ..... 'Grab your things I've come to take you home' - those words, this song, has meant absolutely everything to me these past months. Here's to the day when we can enjoy concerts again - and here's to the artists who's music has kept us all going during these really difficult times. Thank you xxx

"turning water into wine" .... "which connection (s) I should cut" ..... "I walked right out of the machinery" ~ "I'm never where I want to be, Liberty, she pirouette, when I think that I am free" The brilliance of this man's mind is so deep, he is often thought of as a bit crazy - nothing could be further from the Truth. There couldn't be fewer of his caliber in the business, but with his gifts, he fills all the voids, no one today could enter his league, it's refreshing to see so many young people (especially in Europe, totally get it, with our American artists as well) .. This was perfect timing, as a link today brought me here.. Cutting connections, turning it around, and vowing to never "slum it" again. It's not fair to others and you totally sell yourself short. It is truly a life altering act of courage, for him, and for us. Rockin' it with authenticity.
