Been my favourite song since '77......I was 23 and its took me until last weekend to climb up Solsbury Hill. Emotional or what?

A great song expressing a sad moment in time for him, whilst in Genesis his fantastic performances on stage and lyrical creativity captured the audience. I am a great fan of Genesis before and after Peter Gabriels input, I grew up with the music, played to me by my mother. I still follow both and regularly play the cd's in my car, I always reach my destination before I know it. Life's a journey, but good company can ease any bump in the road.

I grew up in a house on top of a hill that overlooked my little town. When I woke up every morning i looked out my window to see my town - it is nothing special, just lower class people working and raising their families. I wanted more in life than the coal mines, so I left home at 18 to join the military in 1983, and have traveled the world. Yet I still call that place home. To this day I remember that vantage point. Whenever I am ready to go home, or get homesick, I play this song.

This was on a pub jukebox in London when I worked there in 1977, I can think recall and see the place, north London, ah qwuare times looking back on it, I've penned lines about it and a spectacular National Front march outside and meanwhile inside we'd great live Bob Marley tracks on the jukebox, the contrast was amusing, I recall hearing Marley in a new light as his live sound come over the speakers - up to that I'd hated reggae music.

i never understood why my brothers liked Genesis and i'm not much for the flute, but i've always like this song a lot... the guitars jump on the start, like they couldn't wait to get playing, and the kick drum's pushing the beat, and as the lyrics unfold, the build seems inexorable and irresistible. one can almost see ol' "Toronto Bob" Ezrin sliding faders up one by one as it gets a little tribal at the end. it always makes me feel like i can get on with whatever it is that needs doing, and git'er done...

I was feeling part of the scenery ( Genesis' elaborate stage shows - he wasn't enjoying it anymore )... I walked right out of the machinery ( Genesis ). I think Peter Gabriel genuinely felt hurt at the time of his departure, given the less than sympathetic responses from his fellow band mates - hence why he wrote this superb song. Solsbury Hill is in Somerset, a place he would go sometimes to chill out and reflect.

The reference to Eagle is a symbol of freedom, moving on to bigger things (projects), going to America etc. He is a fan of Sprinsteen but mostly its about flying free! Empty silhouettes is a reference to The Media and their coverage of his departure from the band, even before he even got a chance to speak to them. He left just before they were due on stage because of the mounting pressure of balancing his life between work and home. Worked out for all in the end.

Partially: But this song is about Peter's personal revelation with God. The eagle in the first portion is about his encounter with the Holy Spirit and his hesitation to accept the nature of God. The second part is about how Peter struggled with being a closet Christian and how it would affect his relationships ultimatly choosing God (leaving Gensis). The third part is about coming to terms with not being holy himself but being willing to work on his failures and pursue a God honoring life.

Thanks for uploading this version. I think it’s practically the same as the single version, but it lacks the second section of the lyrics, am I right? It’s a pity, I love it when he sings “my friends would think I was a nut”, I always remember his face in the rockpalast concert when he sings that line.
