Yes, so sad to see him like this. I owned a restaurant in Richmond, Surrey in the mid 80’s . He was a frequent customer of mine. Very sadly he had a lot of hangers on, especially when he got paid once a month. Sad to see so many take advantage of him. He was always polite and kind. Such a great loss.

Peter Green: Best British blues guitarist who ever picked up a guitar. I've been playing for almost sixty years and have yet to hear someone surpass his feeling, note choice, and phrasing. This reminded me of Sun King by the Beatles, and then I read this song was George Harrison's inspiration for it. Harrison said: "At the time, 'Albatross' (by Fleetwood Mac) was out, with all the reverb on guitar. So we said, 'Let's be Fleetwood Mac doing Albatross, just to get going.' It never really sounded like Fleetwood Mac... but that was the point of origin."

This is why John Lennon called "Sun King" his Fleetwood Mac song. Part of the greatness of the Beatles was that they listened to everybody else and incorporated the good stuff - like "Albatross" - into their music.

Yes, Peter Green messed up in his life, but he is still here with us. And just remember what exactly this man has contributed to music over the years before even considering a single criticism. If this man never played again, and let us all hope that that never happens, he has earned his right to be called a guitar ledgend on a par with Clapton, Hendrix, Beck, and the rest.

His use of silences as much as the guitar is an object lesson for those guitarists who feel that every nano-second has to be filled with riffs, runs and sound. Met Peter Green in a dressing room at a teen club they were booked into for two nights in Michigan. Handed him my Stratocaster, he handed me his Les Paul. He had the strap screwed down on the upper bout. A nice chunk of leather, an old cinch from a saddle. You can see it on many of the videos from around that time. Maybe one of the most quietly charismatic men I've ever encountered. My admiration deepened from the songs he wrote, he was really tuned in to the big power of the universe at that time. A fragile soul, and just a lovely man. All we local Michigan guitar stranglers were sitting down front, with Peter and Danny Kirwin blowing our hair back with Twin Reverbs. We started to take bets on when Mick Fleetwood was going to crash a cymbal. Me, Geri Zubal, Phil Bliss and Thomas Weschler, some other fellows too. Two nights of inspiration, and amazement. Great band,,,great,,,

Brilliant summation and totally agree with you. Not to digress too too much, most of the lead on Albatross was in fact played by Danny Kirwan. I never saw Peter play in his heyday, but I saw him 3 times after his 'return'. The first was when he appeared with the Splinter Group in Colne during one of their annual Blues festivals. At that time, he stayed in the background and was clearly struggling to play. However, he came forwards to try 'Green Manalishi' and was OK until his finger went under the strings. Any guitarist knows how offputting that can be! Two things then happened, the group moved to take the lead as Peter stepped back slightly. The audience all stood up and cheered to show their support for the man they'd all come to see. I managed to get a few photos of him playing when he was nearer the front a little later in the show. The last time I saw Peter was in Harrogate when he appeared with John Mayall ... by then he was confident again. His old touch had gone, but he was well into the Robert Johnson songbook and so took full part in that section of the show.

Like great wine, the music simply gets better with time. Age has no place in music, fantastic song and Mr. Green is a great artist, a great tune that brings back some beautiful memories. It is music such as this that makes life rich!
