I loved Chewbacca growing up,and later in life I had the pleasure of meeting Peter Mayhew and seeing him on a regular basis,he lived round the corner from me about ten doors down,I remember seeing him drive his old Mercedes all scrunched up with his head pressed against the roof,some Halloween nights we would walk passed his house and try and make Chewbacca noises,he came to the window and laughed sometimes,but Peter was genuinely a very private person,God Bless Sir.

I met Peter, several years ago, at a Sci-Fi convention in New Hampshire. It was at his autograph table and he invited me to have a seat next to him and we chatted about life, the universe and everything for over an hour. He was gracious and very personable. Rest in Peace gentle giant.

Actually Peter was 7'3" when he was young, and shrunk to 7'2" when he was old. He got even nicer looking as he got older. I miss him being alive. :'(

Chewy is my fav character. He is an important part of the ensemble AND makes a difference to the plot. He introduced Luke and Obiwan to Han at Mos Eisley. Without Chewy nobody gets off Tatooine. His rouse as a prisoner helped Luke and Han get through the storm troopers to rescue Leia. He saved C3po from the junk pile in Cloud City, and helped Leia infiltrate Jaba's palace to unfreeze Han.

What I find interesting about Han and Chewie's relationship is the way they communicated: Chewie never spoke english but understood it perfectly, likewise Han never spoke Wookie (except a little bit in the "Solo" movie) but understood it perfectly. So they communicated just fine without speaking the other's language at all.

My boyfriend and I saw him at Star Wars Celebration IV at the Convention Center in Los Angeles in 2007. I gasped when I saw him. He was super TALL even though he was hunched over as he walked. He was 7’3!” He was being helped through the crowd with by a couple of guys. He was using a cane and walking very, very slowly. You could tell he was in a lot of pain. 😔 I read that he had double knee replacement in 2013. I’ll never forget that the crowd got super quiet as he passed through. You could hear people whispering “That’s Chewbacca.” No one was saying it loudly though. We all had a great respect for him. ❤

The great thing about Chewbacca, and Peter Mayhew's performance, is that never, not once, did you look at him and think that it was a guy in a furry suit. His movements, his gait, even his expressive eyes made you completely forget that Wookiees aren't real creatures. George Lucas lucked out with him and David Prowse (who got royally shafted at the end by Lucasfilm IMHO) . Now, on a bit of tangent... accent aside.... Mayhew's facial expressions when talking are not unlike Fred Gwynne's. He could have been an interesting Herman Munster. 🙂

Dave Golder ,if you take Chewbacca out of the film it definitely changes the story. If he's not in it, they don't get caught by Ewoks. Potentially then, they don't defeat the Empire on the ground. Saying you can take him out of the films and it doesn't change anything means you need to go back and actually watch the films because they might all be dead without him. Oh yes, and also he introduces Obi Wan to Han Solo which gets them off planet right at the start, thus placing the action of the entire trilogy in motion.
