My dads an ER doc and he still has nightmares of the scream a mother made when she found out her 4 year old son had died from a gunshot wound when the boy and his older brother found their dads gun and decided to play with it. Shit was over 20 years ago and he can still hear her scream. To be in this situation, I can’t even imagine it.

Sadly, so have I. I remember working one night when a patient injured in a car accident came in via ambulance. I didn't get a chance to see the patient, but I did see who was with her. It was her son. I remembered because I cared for her husband/his dad a few years prior when I worked at a nursing home. I remember the panic, the fear...it was just an emotional moment. He was chasing behind them as they ran the patient to a trauma room. I remember getting up and stopping him (visitors aren't allowed in the room, for obvious reasons) and he flipped out, screaming, "That's my mom! I have to get to her!" "I know. I know. I can't let you back there. They need be able to help her and focus on her right now," I said in a soft, gentle tone. The son was just...I get it, but it was difficult. "That's my mom! I have to take care of her!" he kept screaming. "We will take care of her. We will help her," I said. "Right now I need you to sit out here. I will stay with you if you like." The son started to cry. "We were going to look at the Christmas tree. The roads were bad..." he sobbed. I watched him stand and try to get in the room again. Normally I wouldn't do this without asking first, but I stood and grabbed him in a hug. I whispered in his ear, "You trusted me to care for your daddy and I came through for you. Please trust us to take care of your mama. We will come get you as soon as we know something. I promise," I said, handing him another kleenex. Our wait wasn't long. The doctor came out and you know...you could see it in the doc's face. The son just let out this scream that was somehow more heartbreaking than Jackie's. He just started screaming and crying and I went to catch him before he hit the floor. I just stood there, holding him up as he screamed; there's really not anything anyone can say to make it better. Her injuries were just too severe. She died Christmas Eve. They were supposed to be opening presents and enjoying holiday dinner and taking pictures. Instead they had to make funeral arrangements. I stayed with the son for several hours past my shift. I'm sure you'll understand what I'm about to say about those screams...I firmly believe emotional wounds and scars are so much worse than physical ones. They cut you in ways that don't bleed and the pain runs much deeper because the healing is much slower. The final straw for me working in trauma was a baby who was beaten so severely, she later died from her injuries. She was three months old. The dad brought her in; he was responsible for her injuries and death. He beat the mother too. I flipped out on the dad; it was the reason I left trauma and why I could never go into pediatrics.

Can we just admire all the acting in this scene. Jackie and Benton should have gotten an award for this scene. But also everyone's acting. Corday and Greene's, determination and professional manner while working when they had no idea, to confusion when Peter walked in and took over to the look of pure shock and horror when they realized it was one of their own’s nephew and doing what they could to help Peter but also trying to keep him calm when he was getting too intense. And Cleo's nonchalant facial expressions at first to total shock when realizing talking to Jackie that the kid she just saw in the ER was Peter's nephew. And total remorse and comforting Jackie in the waiting room. I did not like Cleo at all, but I am amazed by the many hats she put on in this one scene. She literally went from being a doctor at work, to supportive girlfriend, to being a crying shoulder for Jackie in 5 minutes.

Anytime I think about my son’s future this episode always crosses my mind. I discipline him but I stay close to him too and let him know he can come to his family about anything. All this can come from something as small as letting your kid hang out with the wrong friends. Oh, and where’s the clip of Benton decking Malucci? He earned that ass whoppin

Why is 'beating' the answer no matter WHAT the question was. You don't have 2 think if your primary.responses are silence and rage.
@lauraschoenborn3544
@lauraschoenborn3544 3 жыл бұрын
@@robyndismon394 I agree with you to a point. However, in this moment Peter was completely numb and he was fed up with Malucci’s snarky comments. And when he was criticizing his deceased nephew’s choices, and essentially saying “that’s what you get for being in a gang”. I think Malucci deserved that punch. Peter’s grief manifested itself in anger at what Malucci said and reacted aggressively. I do agree that violence is never the answer but I think Malucci deserved that punch. What he said was rude insensitive, and he should have been kicked off the case early on.

This is why I could never get behind Malucci. Funny at times? Sure. Some moments of maturation? Sure. But ultimately, his character was such a careless, cavalier douchebag. Beyond that, this scene absolutely crushes my soul. From Benton's frenetic attempt to save his nephew, to Jackie's soul-wrenching scream, everything about this scene was iconic. Aaaand of course Sally Field and Maura Tierney get the Emmy noms for this episode.
