Dragons' Den

3 жыл бұрын

Next into the Den is father-daughter innovation i-stay. Launched in 2012, the i-stay is a non-slip shoulder strap for bags and rucksacks which is patent-pending and can clip onto any bag with d-rings, the duo seek £50,000 in return for 10% equity but are the family ready to bring an outsider onboard?
An international sensation, Dragon's Den features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Den from our Dragons, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

How do you know that? She made a dumb assumption and likely most of you have no clue about how investments work since if she had invested, she would own preferred shared which carries a higher voting rights than common stock. You see, an investor can leverage the investment by putting a clause in it, that even though they own less of the outstanding shares, their voting rights are equal. What she said would make no sense in most companies since they are owned by people who would have had an established relationship before she came to the table. Small time investor trying to find an excuse not to invest. what if the company was owned by two friends or coworkers or a boy friend and girlfriend, wouldnt the nonsense she claimed still apply ?

its actually easy to see why their are confused. CPA here - non-accountants often do their accounting using a cash - basis, so they only look at the change in cash on hand and mistakenly confuse it as profit/loss. This is where they are getting to the $3k in cash balance after year 1, so they spent 97k from the 100k initial. We dont know how much is expense, since the dragons didn't ask about change in inventory or other assets. Year 2, their answer tells me they are reconciling with their tax returns or a financial statement they dont understand, and you can see the confusion on their faces. The accountant would have collected other expenses claimed that did not directly flow through the bank account, such as bad debt, milage, depreciation, etc. Thats likely where the 22k loss figure comes from, or it is adjustments to retained earnings that the accountant would have made for their other contributions to the business.

This is all good and all. But I sincerely hope she isn't flexing on insta and social media that she's some big time entrepreneur. If she's lowkey doing all this without rubbing it in to friends and families faces I'll have a lot of respect for her. At the end of the day daddy's money their to be spent by his children but there is nothing worse than show offs that rub it in.

Dont take a wage when you're running a startup, plain & simple. Greed screwed them up; if a business isn't profitable, don't take money out of it. If you can't take the pain, don't start the business; if you want to be paid, work harder to make it profitable

I can't believe no one picked up on the istay strap being useless because you can just opt to wear a regular strap cross body to prevent the strap from slipping. Thats it. Problem solved. Nick Jenkins was absolutely right about the idea being basically a commodity as well.

Nah, I loathe wearing cross body straps; makes me feel 13 years old. I have narrow shoulders. Bags constantly slip off. I can’t understand a business person like Sarah just thinking ‘well, I don’t need it so therefore nobody else would either.’

This case is very strange, looking up the information her company does not exist but she is down as a director in Falcon Bags ltd, her father on the other hand isn't as falcon bags is owned 50% by her and 50% by another person named Satish. John was a company secretary in a completely different company and was never named as a director in Falcon. Falcon bags is still running today online with a total asstest amount of 200k.
