When Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve can fight for a championship and win it, you know the car has to be incredibly fast
@rupertpupkin96302 жыл бұрын
I'd say it was even better than Hamilton's. Everyone forgets (or ignores) that Villeneuve was literally learning most of the tracks in his rookie season, he was a proper US racing product (unlike Montoya for example) and only spent time in Europe previously when he literally started racing. Yet he took the championship battle down to the final race, after a brilliant come from behind win at Estoril - which included one of the all time greatest overtakes on Schumacher - and was regularly outpacing Hill in the second half of 1996. His pole laps at Spa and Suzuka were outrageous. How many IndyCar champions have gone to F1 and lit it up the way Villeneuve did immediately and won the World Championship? One other, Mario Andretti. It's a very short list... JV is unique. Very unique actually and his open wheel triple feat is quite frankly legendary.
@yolandalindsay83682 жыл бұрын
Rookies (1&2) in name only. One man debut as a professional champion Indy driver now sitting in the best F1 car on the grid at the time. Nigel did the opposite and became a champion also. These old hands should not be compared to genuine green horns. Would you put a 28 year old up against his 14 year old self and ignore the 14 years of strength and development of the 28 year old to prevail over his younger less experience opponent? Should be an impressive victory without question. At minimum an asterisk should be attached to the names of these college grade high school participants. Just Saying.
@rupertpupkin96302 жыл бұрын
@@yolandalindsay8368 you're right to a degree. But if you take Villeneuve's career trajectory in context, what he did was pretty special. Never karted as a kid, didn't start racing anything until the age of 18... was on pole position for his debut F1 race at age 24...having already won a CART IndyCar championship/Indy 500 double. Of course nobody ever looks at his career like that. But they should... because it was pretty spectacular and unique. You won't ever see that repeated the way he did it.
@rupertpupkin96302 жыл бұрын
@@housesports000 he was more than competitive. From 1998 through to 2000, he had some truly heroic qualifying and race performances in absolute shitboxes. JV was in the top 3 drivers in the world for a 6 year period (1995 - 2000). BAR was a nice dream, in which he owned a stake in the team. But he really should have gone to McLaren instead when he had the chance.

4 drivers won their debut race? Who were them? (apart from Guiseppe Farina)
@Ren_10902 жыл бұрын
I think there’s only been 3? One of them is Farina and then there’s the winner of the 1950 Indy500, Johnnie Parsons. Obviously these two are exceptional cases since Farina won the first ever F1 race and 1950 was the first year the 500 was an f1 event (Parsons had raced in the 500 the year before). So I guess the only “true” driver who won on debut was Giancarlo Baghetti, who won on debut in a privately-entered Ferrari at the 1961 French GP. It was his only podium in 21 starts.

Not sure what your criteria for the ranking is. But seems to exclude car performance team mate performance f1 practice before hand etc etc. Villeneuve ranking so high is shocking as he was training hard in an f1 car which was the best on the grid so rookie by first race yes but seat time was higher then any other rookie. Hamilton in the best car again by a mile .... yet senna who im not a fan of takes a poor car and does amazing things in it is so far back. This is obviously personal preference and has no bearing on actual performance based on the driver.

Hamilton's rookie season is overrated, Jacques Villeneuve almost won on his first season and won on his second season because he got the best car on debut just like him, but nobody talks about Villeneuve because he got lucky with the car and was just an average driver. Same thing with Rosberg, he was an average driver and nobody thought anything of him, but all of a sudden he became the 2nd best driver in one year magically and it was a coincidence when he drove for Mercedes
