Canon 80D with EOSHD C-LOG | Working With Different Camera Profiles

I wanted to show you how the different profiles effect the video. Also, you can see how flat the EOD C-Log brings the image down. This makes it easier to recover the bad areas and to make the colors pop to YOUR liking rather than it being canned and predictable, and frankly - BORING lol. Filmed in my 24/7/365 Christmas Room.
Recorded 1080 30p using EOSHD C-LOG - it uses the lowest settings (Saturation, Contrast, Sharpening, Noise Reduction) and +2 on Color Tone. I used the standard sharpening setting of 2 in Final Cut Pro and I also added USM (from Apple's Motion app)
Hairlight soft box behind me, 2 soft boxes in front.
Used the 2017 i7 4.2Ghz 27" iMac with Final Cut Pro X to edit and output to ProRes. Then to H.264 for KZbin.

I cant believe this video was recorded with a 80D! Dynamic range and sharpness looks amazing!! Maybe that great lens, that lights, but, anyway, this is one of the best 80D footage Ive ever seen. That's because most people who shoot with 80D on youtube use Standard picture profile with a lot of digital in-camera sharpening which looks awful.. As soon as you switch picture profile to Neutral it looks amazing and then with C-log or something similar even better.. I got 80D 8 months ago and I think if you can get it for decent price it still is one of the best 1080p camera in it's price range, of course paired with good lens.. It can make really great looking videos and it's perfect for filmmaking on a budget even today

Would you say that the h264 8bit codec would be a problematic to work with log though? since it doesn't have as much color depth to manipulate in post I've been reading that it can easily lead to banding and overall the stretch from log to lut and color grade is too much of a stretch for 8bit. What are your thoughts on that? I've also noticed a little bit of chopping at 13:50 on your pants and on the laptop in the corner as well but not as much after the color grading.

Hi Peter, excellent video, as usual. On my calibrated monitor I actually preferred your Neutral Profile with your video preset applied to it even more than the C-Log version. The latter looked a little strongly saturated by comparison. They both looked great though! All of the Canon DSLRs and M-series cameras can use the picture profiles. The funny thing is that they don't all look the same with the same profiles. I used to use Technicolor Cinestyle on an EOS M and the video looked great straight out of camera. A lot more shadow detail was retained than using the Canon profiles, but there was still plenty of colour saturation and contrast. It came out of camera as though it had already been colour graded. The same profile on the M3 was so flat it was a nightmare for a non-video guy like me to work with in consumer-grade video editing software.

C-log color graded look really nice, for sure better than my panasonic g7 on Cine-d which add an ugly green/yellow tint

For best comparison look at his shirt under his arm. You can see all of them had crushed shadows except the "C-Log" one. Also is hard to get this level of quality with simple lenses, here is a L lens.

I have a calibrated monitor. 5:49 - Blank frame. Anyway the standard profile out of the camera doesn't look too great to me, looks a bit bright (Not clipping highlights though) and shadows/blacks are crushed too much With your preset applied, it looks quite a bit better. The colors/highlights on the corrected C-Log look very good and the best out of what you showed.

EOSHD C-LOG is not a C-Log you get from Canon. It's just a picture profile, just like the one from Technicolor, but worse and you paid money to get it.

Yes, you can use the EOSHD log in your camera. You have to install it. It comes with instructions on how to install into the camera. Basically you have to connect the camera to the computer with a USB cable, get the EOS Utility program from Canon (free, on your disk or on Canon's web site) and use that program to put the file into your computer. They (EOSHD) explain it all with all the steps. I was able to do it and it wan't that hard to do. They even have a forum to help you.

Hi master, I'm using technic color cinestyle profile. Would you mind to advise how much sharpness you applied to the c-log footage in post? And how much contrast added?

That info is pretty much explained in the description. I did not say what I did for contrast because every video is different. I work with the scopes in Final Cut Pro (most other higher end software has them too). The scale is 0 to 100, so for the contrast I bring the scope down to where they are right near the 0 setting. I also keep the top under 100. After that, I adjust by eye so it looks nice to me. Sometime this means I have to go against the scopes a little, but not too often. Here is something else to try - set the profile to the way Canon sets it up for "Standard". Then lower the Contrast down to -2. Then change the white balance to AWB-W. Change MP4 tp MOV and change to ALL-I setting. Don't do anything else - just test that out and you will be surprised how nice it is :)

In 1080p ALL-I, which is the cameras highest quality, yes Bill. The profile doesn't affect the speed of the camera operation as far as I have seen.

One more thing, you can trade the articulating screen in for clean HDMI at 4:2:2 8 bit by going to the 7D Mark II and record to an Atomos recorder and also use ProRes as a choice. I am not sure about the 60fps on the 7D2, you should check.

Hey! Just wondering, did you ever figure out what the audio hiss culprit was from a while ago¿? I know you went through a bit to figure it out and brought in a friend to help.

Yes, my friend is the chief engineer at one of the big 3 networks so it was quite a bit of overkill to call him lol. He came and found it in 10 minutes lol. It was the AC wall adapter so I didn't have to use the battery when filming in the Christmas Room. Put a battery in the camera - noise gone - totally silent audio chain. So I got a new adapter and never looked back. I have an AC power adapter for both the Panasonic and Canon cameras. Nice to have college friend connections from a hundred years ago lol :)

Aaaaaaah those pesky AC wall adaptors (also called "wallworts"!!) ? Those things can cause so much noise etc and be just a big pain in the you know what! ? Glad you figured it out! Btw- Picked up the 5DMK4 and am loving it, having embraced the things we all have been frustrated about. She shoots splendidly! Looking at the Atomos for an external display. Love that they can record everything to an internal SSD drive inside! Have you checked them out at all! Ya might wanna! :))

Not that I know. I shot all 3 different profiles in this video at ISO 320, and the instructions PDF say nothing pertaining to that.

Not sure about the EOSHD C-Log, but I know for the Technicolor Cinestyle profile they recommend using ISOs in multiples of 160. No need to bump it to a minimum of say 3200 like with S-Log though

I know this stuff can get confusing lol. C-Long is from Canon, just like S-Log is from Sony. So this is not a Canon branded Log profile, but a Log profile from another party - some harsh style personalities would say - a fake :) This one is from EOSHD, just like I say in the video. Now comes the argument, is it just as good, better, or worse? I find it is just as good, and the price is way way cheaper (unless you get it with the camera for free). This company also makes it for the Sony camera too.

I have no idea how to link to something inside the app store. Open Google Play, or the Apple app store on your phone and type in Canon Camera Connect. On the Google Play Store it has 5 million downloads and it is free.

Yup, you found the one I am using. It is from Canon themselves and designed to work with their cameras. Each major company has one of their own apps for their cameras.
