My first criteria is price. There’s no sense falling in love with a watch you can’t afford. My second is the look of the watch. After all, that’s what you will be looking at for the duration of your ownership of said watch. Then comes brand, movement and condition. My budget means that I have to look at a lot of used watches. Thanks for your insight into how you approach watch buying. It made me think about how I go about my watch searches. Great video as always!!!
@PeterKotsa4 жыл бұрын
Appreciate your feedback. I used to buy always with my first criteria based on price and then move down the list. I then started doing it this way and found it ‘forced’ me to get something I actually like (rather than just my budget. This way it also forces me to re examine my current watches and sell what I am not wearing so that to gain the funds needed (regardless if I purchase new or preowned). Thanks for your insights as well, as long as we end up with what we ‘love’ then we have achieved our goals. Thanks again cheers Peter

Nope can't be bothered with all that I choose by love at first sight. If I go 'WOW' when I see a watch I like then that's the one I lust after. It doesn't matter if it's a mega expensive Swiss watch or a mega cheap Chinese watch, if I desire it and can afford it then I'll buy it, even if it doesn't fit my skinny wrist. I'm the one that's going to look at it all day long and if it makes me smile and feel contented then that's the only thing that matters.

Watched your vid and have re- watched them now, and realised that I had the perfect watch all along. Since selling my 2503.50 aqua terra I've owned a few Hamiltons, a Speedy and IWC 16 as well as a few Seikos Everything is sold now and I'm back to just my G shock 5600e and W86 casio I need a year to save to re-buy the Aqua Terra Do you think this model will still be easy to find next August (my 40th)? hahaha...that's very funny indeed. If you need to start with affordability first, then by all means do so. I leave affordability to last for a specific reason...it gets me to examine my hearts 'genuine desire' for what I really want, not what I can afford. Life is really short as you well know, if we really desire something and after going through the process we end up with the affordability factor being $10k + , then we need to determine ways on how to best achieve that goal...sell some things, save a bit more cash and be patient patient patient..(if it is genuinely what we really want) of course if it is $250K, I would ask myself do i really want to put that much cash on my $10k wrist...in other words, if I break it, loose it or drop it..can I sleep at night?...LOL Thanks for making me laugh today, I really appreciate it, that's great PS Do you have any Patek in mind?...I have a close friend who sports one on his wrist and it is a super cool timepiece in more ways than one. thanks again..cheers Peter

I bought my first proper watch in March. It's the green 2020 alpinist. How I came about that decision was influence mainly by one factor -- the gorgeous green dial. I'm a sucker for green objects and wasn't necessarily a watch guy. I only started finding out more about watches after the purchase. I've since made a mental list of watches I want to purchase in the future.

Great video! I'm already struggling at your 1st tip of choosing a brand. The list of brands I find interesting is extremely long. Literally A (Avi-8) to Z (Zelos) and everything in between. 4th tip: size: for me everything between 42 - 45 mm (I've a 6.15 inch wrist). 5th advice: affordability. Since I'm not wealthy, I prefer the up to 500 USD range.
@PeterKotsa4 жыл бұрын
Hi Gabriel, I hear you. Brand is the deciding factor, once you overcome that hurdle then new or secondary market should cater the affordable aspect. As for your wrist, plenty of options. Personally I don’t follow trends, what everyone else is buying etc. I just buy what I like in a brand I find appealing Cheers
@Televisiontechnology4 жыл бұрын
Hi Gabriel - I have a smaller wrist too - 6.25 inches, I found the most important thing is the lug to lug - the height of the watch was key for me. I have 42mm watch (speedmaster) - lug to lug 48mm and is ok. Anything approaching 50mm is too big. I found 38mm-42mm generally the sweet spot - but only with the under 50mm height. I got ride of a few divers watches. For your wrist size and budget - if you like divers, have a look at the steinhart ocean 39mm models - well built, swiss movement, 300m. Hold up well to some of the more expensive divers

Another really helpful and pertinent post Peter! I went through a similar process with my last purchase, just in a slightly different order. Priority # 1 was style. I wanted a 'One Watch Collection' type piece, a Rolex Explorer substitute if you will. Priority # 2 Was, (unfortunately) cost. I had a budget of around $500AUD. Not much. I didn't want to flip anything right away as I recently consolidated my collection to buy a few new pieces and didn't feel that I could sell anything that I wouldn't immediately regret selling only to re-buy the same piece at a (perhaps) greater price & with a few vintage Soviet pieces, struggle to ever find again, irrespective of cost. Priority #3 - Find a watch I like that fitted the above. I settled on 3 contenders. A Seiko Alpinist (Cream dial) - Yeah, what you sold! A Smiths Everest PRS25 40mm. Yeah - an homage, but an homage to a collectable piece that is no longer in production and a watch that has a name on the dial that (arguably) has a better claim to making an homage of an Explorer 1016 than most. Or a Certina DS Podium 38mm. A Swiss made watch with an ETA 2824-2 under the dial. Priority # 4 - Do a pros & cons list: The Seiko was #1 in X-factor but the cost and that loose 2nd crown (causing a wonky inner bezel) worried me - a lot. The Smiths was Practical, but it was £330 ($650AUD+) for an Homage watch with a Miyota 9 series mvmt. Big draw back. The Certina is a beautiful watch, close to the Alpinist in X factor. It's Swiss made. It's within budget- but- it's 38mm with a 47-48mm lug to lug. I have an 8"+ wrist. Priority #5. Wait at least a week and see where I land. What I thought about in that week : I have a Seagull 1963. It's 38mm and has a similar Lug to Lug as the Certina. It's always on my wrist. It's my go to piece when I'm not wearing a beater. 38mm X 47mm works. A beautiful Swiss watch with an ETA in my budget works. It feels Right. The Certina DS Podium it is! Priority #6. Pull The Rip Cord. www.jomashop.com/certina-watch-c001-407-16-087-00.html I had some coupons and got the piece for $250USD ($500AUD all up). It's still in the mail, can't wait to receive it. Haven't questioned my decision once. Let's hope that doesn't change when I receive it! Cheers mate. Anthony.

Hi Anthony, that's brilliant. I think you made the much better choice in the end. The alpinist was a nice watch (not without its flaws) I have not missed it yet. I think the Certina with its movement will give you much more satisfaction. Gee I tell you what though, thats a great price you paid. Flcik trough some wrist shots when it arrives, would love to see it. As for the order which you chose, well done, you stayed within your budget and chose wisely. Like I said in the video, thats usually them method I use and it has worked for me. other have adaptions of similar methods (as yourself) and manage to narrow down to a watch they want realtively quickly. Still others search and search and search and can never make a decision. You did brilliantly this time. Cheers mate well done Peter

One thing about the size of the watch/dial... one thing we have to consider is the overall look of the watch on the wrist and hand. I have 14cm wrist, extremely skinny... but i also have a problem of having extremely long fingers and palm. So my advise is just never let the lugs hang over the wrists, and never let the dial overwhelm the overall look of the hand. Tbh a 35mm with lug-to-lug of below 44 looks great and proportionate on my wrist, but when looking at the mirror and comparing to my wrist to hand overall look, i look like im wearing a watch from my kid days. So i prefer a 37 or 38 to a maximum of 40mm with lugs shorter no longer than 46mm. And the zenith primero 38mm works the best. I have a sub i bought about 8 years ago, those maxi case of the new ceramic models have such big and thick lugs it overwhelms my wrists, but fits borderline normal with then overall look of my hand. So always wear the watch and look in the mirror before buying, not just the look on the wrist

Nah.... Will have to disagree. You started by saying "We are not all made of money" and then talked modest. And THEN you say the first choice is brand- and that too Omega!! Doesn't fit mate. For a regular person (with some kind of Watch know-how), the priority is 1. Budget (minor difference, but a different nonetheless from "affordability" as you said) 2. Type/ Look 3. Size 4. Movement 5. Anything that you have an emotional connect to (a story, either of the watch or something it reminds you of or something you wanted to be reminded of) 6. IF all the above fit, THEN MAYBE - Brand. P.S. That's how I got my Seiko 5. P.P.S. But Oh Well....to every man his own
@PeterKotsa4 жыл бұрын
Hey Vrat, thanks for the feedback. Several years ago I used to use the same method you listed. Starting firstly by Affordability (Budget), I found after years of buying watches and collecting, I ended up with watches I could "afford", but didn't really "love" or seriously "bond" with. I then forced myself to change my mindset, now I choose a brand i like, eg Seiko, Omega, Oris, Casio etc and then I go from there. Regardless of price point at the end, if the watch is out fo reach for me, I look on the preowned market. If the watch is still out of reach for me $$, then I have 2 choices, 1. If I really want the watch, then buckle down , save save save and be patient util you get it. 2. If I decide its not worth the time to save and wait, then I move on to possibly a different brand Hope that all makes sense mate, thanks again for your feedback, cheers Peter

I took pictures, stated how much I wanted for it, and someone wrote to me and we met and they gave the money to me and they took the canoe. Im 6’1 with 6.5inch wrist and my collection ranges from 34mm Timex Marlin to 37mm El Primero revival then stepping up to 6 digit 40mm Sub and ending with 43mm Sea Dweller. Now Sea Dweller is thick watch but due to width of ceramic bezel it reads and wears small. It’s different than other 43mm with all dial watches. I also tend to wear my watches always behind the wrist bone unlike many and can pull off all my collections without looking disproportional or silly. I also tend to look at whole length of my arm relative to watch size when choosing size.

Ahh those golden beginnings of (so many watches so little cash) We have all started the same way. I think the best thing to do is slow down and decide which of these is on top of the ladder for you. Research, read, watch videos of others opinions and when you’ve decided on the 1st in your heart, save for that one and see where the wind takes you after living with it for a few months. Our tastes change over time and through experience 👍

Sometimes you get a watch that you enjoy a lot more than you expected. And end up wearing it every day. For me that is a Casio. The steel square (DMW B5000). It ticks so many of my boxes. Looks nice on my wrist. Carefree as it is solar charged and has multiband 6 (atomic timekeeping). Worldtime (perfect for my travels). Waterproof to 200 meters. I love my mechanical watches. Thats fair enough. I hear what you're saying. It is up to the individual, sometimes I find I spend time researching and finally getting a watch and then after owning it for a few years maybe it doesn't get the love it deserves and I cannot see what i first saw in it, then thats the watch I usually move on. Once again everyone is different and no judgement here..cheers

Great video. One thing I don't get at 4:00 is that you mention "you can dress it up by putting on a bracelet". And that you can "dress it down by putting on a leather strap". Certainly a leather strap is considered the more formal dressy option. While the bracelet is the more sporty casual option.
@PeterKotsa4 жыл бұрын
Hi Manny, yes I know I have had that question a few times here. I think the traditional way we think of watches is slowly changing ion our society. Traditionally a dress watch is a slim simple looking watch (no chronographs or extra functions etc) equipped with a beautiful petitie leather strap. What dictates fashion and trends today in our society?.. I see that Hollywood and celebrities have a massive part to play in the direction of what is now acceptable and what is the new norm. For example, I see James Bond (Daniel Craig) sporting an Omega with Nato strap or a Bracelet in a formal suit and tie event. I think to myself,...what gives?? LOL And you know what, he manages to pull it off. Many people I come into contact with today in my circle of friends also wear a submariner on a bracelet for example for the same purpose. So I guess maybe trends are changing, Just like many years ago I personally used to wear a shirt and tie religiously..now these days my dress sense has changed and you will probably find me sporting a tie only at the most formal events. Women as well are trending to wearing men's watches, Daytona's and Speedmaster's etc..it's the trend/fashion. All that said, i agree, the traditional sense is leather strap and minimalistic watch as a dress. Personally, I wear a stitched leather tan strap with this Omega and casually run around with jeans and a top and I love it. Hope that all makes sense.:) Once again we are all individuals, we can stick to certain traditions or ditch them in favour of others, either way, as long as we enjoy our gear :) thanks for your feedback again , cheers Peter

Thanks for the video. For me it is basic stuff., but for a lot of people helpful information. I know what I need and want. For me the biggest problem is scratching an itch but deep down you want another watch. I have fallen into this pitfall. In the end you want the watch that you really want and selling watches and buying the watch that I really wanted is more expensive then saving and waiting for it. Patience and saving for the watch you want is sometimes difficult when you have an itch that needs to be scratched.

#1 if your wrist is small (below 180 mm) don't buy a 42mm watch.
@PeterKotsa4 жыл бұрын
True, however I have a few friends who have 160-165mm wrists and can pull of a 42 or even a 44mm watch because the width of their wrist is actually wider than mine (personally I have a 180mm wrist). But generally speaking you are right. cheers

When it comes to size (which is my most important criteria) do not get hung up on the diameter only. The Diameter says a lot about the presence of the watch, but not necessarily much about the wearabiltity. The Lug to Lug distance is way more important for that
@PeterKotsa4 жыл бұрын
Correct, if it fits comfortably by getting the right lug to lug distance, then as an individual, you can make a decision on how big or small a watch look to you personally based on its diameter to your wrist hand proportions, that's an individual call, thanks for the feedback, cheers

@stavros_katsopr4 жыл бұрын
W(hy)tf couldn't you make this a "4 criteria"? That 5th one is always my killer! I would exchange that 5th with "time/versatility" one. Meaning what the look of it stays in a few years and if it'll be suitable in different occasions/ dresses. I'm more of a "small collection" guy, so i like to find an all-around watch to fill most of my needs. In this case, to spend a bit more now is ok... but i'm short in general... lol (bad olive harvest, 2nd year in a raw, we have oil... none is buying tho....) On the other hand, you're spot on mate, especialy by the way (i feel, never can be sure) you set your mind to look in general this "hobby". Pre-owned makes it more of a sentimental thing in my eyes, guess it works the other way around too (a watch having two or more owners has more to tell... to the other watches!!!). Plus marks have a story on their own. At the end this is a comment of many "own"s for a watch i don't own...yet! Cheers mate, stay safe, be happy.
@PeterKotsa4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback, I agree with you, the fifth one ends up always being the 'decider' for me too. However at least it narrows it down to whether i get a New or Preowned addition. Being a small collection guys is actually a great thing and many would envy your position. Too many watches does not do anyone any favours...they just sit in a watch box. Cheers

If you notice in my next video I purchased a Glycine Airman and the crystal is Acrylic, soft and susceptible to scratches etc..I don't have a problem with that because the intended use of the watch..I am not going to be hard on that unit.
