Peter simulate a take off by giving it around 80% throttle for 2 minutes on the ground to check if the escs and motor can handle the current and will not cut off or something midflight due to temperature issues or something.

Peter be careful those motors, in some testing I was a part of for heavy lift drones, we noticed that they can peak around 300 amps in a 14s configuration. Be sure to size your connectors and wire appropriately or they will arc and carbonize. The only ones we found that worked well were castle 8mm bullets. In one instance we had them melt the high temp solder and simply fall off of the wire. Also I'm not sure what ESC's you are using but if they are the Turnigy dlux 250A we had 2 of 6 units that had bad decoupling capacitors.

I'm in my 60s now but as a private pilot I flew all kinds of aircraft, anything that would fly, but this one looks a little weak in some areas...whats with the gap in the wings and the leverage on the ailerons looks a bit much considering the airflow they're up against? I may change my mind seeing it up close and I do trust Peter so I wish him the best.

I would strongly suggest that you add some kind of emergency power cut off (like a handle), so that if you get into electrical troubles, you can pull the handle in half a second and then focus on crashing safely :) Like if one of the engine controllers goes whack and you need to kill the motors to get out of a spin or so. Looking forward to your maiden flight :)
@johnpossum556
@johnpossum556 7 жыл бұрын
Thing is, if the worst case scenario happens like the batteries go aflame, then cutting the power means nothing. Be better just to velcro them down and maybe add a handle like a piece of 3/4 inch rope to them so he could just yank them out in an emergency and toss them overboard then glide home safely. (he would need to move forward to counteract the CG being shifted more aft)

I really don't want to be a hater, but if he gets into a spin at a low enough altitude(higher than, say 10 m and lower than cca 100m) no cutoff lever and no brs will save him. Higher, the brs might have enough altitude to activate and save his ass. He has very little chance to get out of a spin properly without proper training and the understanding how the aircraft performs in critical flight envelopes. Spinning is quite a violent affair, at a moments notice your legs are pointing straight at the ground and your airspeed rapidly increases, as you spin in the direction of the wing that lost lift first. It is quite scary and recovery must be practiced or at least taught(for airplanes in which spins are not permitted). I don't know about his aircraft piloting experience, but he really shouldn't fly the maiden himself if he has none. It would be a waste of a great man and of the aircraft, that looks quite nice. Even if he just damages it, it would be a waste of a great project. As for the propulsion system, lipo batteries are quite volatile, and even professionally made electric glider propulsion systems had some problems. I include a report about fires caused by FES systems in gliders: assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/59c8f175e5274a49c07f4704/AAIB_S3-2017_G-GSGS.pdf Best of luck, Andrej

Lipos are bad news should they fail, speed controllers too. Just look at the fires in those hoverboards last christmas season and you get the idea of how volatile they are. Think how these batteries are often made by the cheapest way possible in China with low QC standards. Foam aircraft have been built with small 2 strokes.

@nvo5307

That's more of a problem in a static environment. When the plane can move, it will give way (move forward) before the bending moment of the mounts is reached.
@code8239
@code8239 7 жыл бұрын
Actually, you are wrong. Air space is not static, meaning that there is wind, gusts and turbulence, leading much greater forces than those 2 motors can produce in "controlled" environment. Of course that is not all, every physical object do have an resonance frequency where forces can easily amp up and break the object. Also do you think those motors stop producing force right after his plane starts to move? Nah, propeller efficiency will decrease as airspeed goes up but that plane will not go so fast that it could do any significant difference. random perception: Drag on that plane compared to prop size is remarkable. According to my experience this means high cruise throttle. I'm concerned that after take off there might be only 5 min flight time before he need to prepare to land.

Peter. Huge fan here. I am a professional pilot, instructor, an A&P mechanic, and builder of a RV-7. Other than your RC experience, have you logged any flight training ? If not I would highly suggest it! I remember my transition from RC planes to full size came along with some surprises, like developing a sense for pitch attitudes, airspeed, etc. I can't wait to see this fly!

I thought the same too. The struts look like aluminium so they will probably be fine, but it wouldn't take much more weight to make them way stronger
@alexdimen1642
@alexdimen1642 7 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly! I also saw one of them shift under full thottle. One more thing; the motor and beam assembly may hit a resonance (natural) frequency at a certain motor RPM because of their geometry. He'll want to test at a number of different RPM's to make sure they don't shake themselves apart. Good luck!

Good stuff man! The only concern I have is when you put on the part that translates your stick movements to the control surfaces (min mark 2:05). Looks like you have the spar in the wing and that bit of foam as the only bonding surfaces. Is that going to be enough to hold up against the forces of the control surfaces pushing back on it?

Hey peter... I'm not sure how study these aluminum profiles are which hold the motors..they seem a bit flimsy, may want to consider strengthen these in forward thrust direction (diagonal bar maybe)? Except for that, it's looking great, you should give it a light paint job in white, and some letters..that would make it look even better 😋 Also, do a Livestream for maiden flight please😍

I think it'd be a waste of aerodynamic efficiency to create that much drag -- I just don't think the batteries will need it. I suppose it all depends on how much he demands of it the first flight & then he can change some things around if need be. (my sense of Peter tells me he'll more likely be on to another plane/project before that.. Maybe he'll build a human sized boat next? )

Do you have plans for a Fuse or Breaker for each motor/ESC/battery? easy to cut power to it in case of a runaway or something like that. Also, do you have a fire extinguisher rated for LiPo fires? If the batteries do puff or catch fire in air, you should put some sort of shroud around them, at least to direct flames away from you (would likely melt out the bottom....) but just to keep you isolated. Love the videos, and Cannot wait for the maiden! Truly inspiring. I too want to build an electric ultralight, and this will help me figure out the logistics of electronics. What ESC's are those? I do not see a link to them like the motor.

Do you mean to have one prop spin clock wise and one prop to spin counter clockwise? Wouldn't have even thought of it but makes total sense. Im no pilot but i do a lot of boating and every boat that has twin engines or more have propellers that spin opposite of each other other wise the boat will pitch when under throttle.
@hunterroberts4332
@hunterroberts4332 7 жыл бұрын
its called angular momentum, I disagree. The moment of Inertia from the motor/prop should be considerably smaller then that of the plane resulting in a slow (maybe even not noticeable at all) counter spin to the props rotation. And guess what, when this happens the wing provides a restoring moment as the wing that rolls down sees an increase in velocity equaling more lift and thus restoring itself from the disturbance. Thumbs down Goose

Hunter Roberts edit both wings see the same increase in speed it's just that the one going down makes it so so the air is pushing up more. The effect is the dipped wing has an increase in AoA while the (more lift) and the one going up has a decrease in AoA restoring the balance.

Hello Peter. I just wanted to say that I have been following your videos for several weeks and have to say that as a former aircraft mechanic and current pilot I am quite impressed with the work you've done thus far. What it your projected final weight? Have you calculated the total thrust of the motors at 100% and if so, what is it? What is your expected range, and/or duration of flight on fully charged batteries? How much do your batteries weigh and what type of battery are you using? What is your flying experience. Have you had any formal flight training to date, and if not, have you scheduled at least 5 or 6 hours of training prior to flying your electric aircraft? I'm also curious as to how the FAA regs apply to electric ultralight aircraft if you intend to fly under FAR 103. I know that in the case of gasoline engine powered aircraft, in order to qualify as an ultralight the weight allowance is 254lbs max without fuel. I'm guessing that they allow you the equivalent weight of 5 gallons of gasoline (30.3lbs) to be added to the 254lb limit to allow for the added weight of the batteries? I'm really looking forward to seeing your aircraft's maiden flight and wish you all the best of luck in your endeavor.
@timothyhorn5080
@timothyhorn5080 7 жыл бұрын
I'm very curious to see how well it performs. The one thing that immediately occurs to me is that your CG should remain constant owing to the fact that you are not burning off weight (gasoline) as you fly. Once it is properly balanced and trimmed it should remain relatively stable provided all else is well.

Peter test flew the aircraft a few hours after posting this video. He did it after sunset(he said 30 - 40 minutes after, there was some delay, I think it would be much wiser to reschedule the maiden ), with propellers that he himself said were not the best choice in combination with his battery pack, and in a hurry. He was a bit too mission oriented imho, dangerous. The test flight was, nevertheless a success. He did a few jumps and then a short turning flight, after which he landed a bit hard but with only slight damage to the underside of the nose of the aircraft(it is a taildragger and it tipped at landing) There was a livestream, but it seems the recording was removed. The aircraft was too nose heavy, he had difficulty maintaining level flight as constant back stick pressure was required, which also increased drag. He was pretty much on the edge of a stall all the time, according to himself. He was otherwise pleasantly surprised with how the aircraft handled. He said that he has a PPL licence. I think he is winging it a bit too much with this project and he takes unnecessary risks, even though his technical prowess is really enviable. I hope he sits down and thinks things trough a bit better, then he is sure to succeed.

Thank you for responding Andrej. I'm glad to learn that things went well all in all. I'm sure that once he gets the balance corrected it will fly much better. I'm looking forward to seeing video of it flying.

Peter, I have a suggestion. I know, Im 11, but i know enough to tell you that on the throttle stick, you should add a clip of some sort or duck tape a stick there so that your differential thrust doesnt mess with everything else, and you will still be able to unclip it and use the differential thrust. -Max P.S, Good luck! its almost finished!
