Well the wings are now done! so far the max weight of the beast is 180 (no powerplant) this kinda sucks as I think I'll be getting right up to 230 for take off :( Still beats the 500Lbs the aviation forums keep saying hahahaha

Please put a bushing in the ends of your square aluminum tubes where you pass a bolt thru so when tightening it doesn't crush the tube . Without it when you tighten bolt, tube may deform inward on loading then bolt would loosen up. Maybe you did this and I didn't catch on video. Otherwise quite impressed with all you fabricating skills.

Foamies don't matter when they break. Big deal, you get some duck tape out. Broken limbs... Well not so easy to repair. You're comparing standards against 2 different things, like a toy RC car vs a real car with traction control, ABS braking, computer controlled dampening (the really cool electromagnetically adjustable shocks is what I was referring too), etc. Toy car, sometimes have suspension, and usually the wheels are made of foam... So yeah, not the same. Don't make a real car based on the toy!

Hey there, I've been flying since I was fourteen, hang gliders, ultralights, general aviation singles and twins, also an AP mechanic with an Inspection Authorization or IA. I'm 57 now and still just as crazy, about being safe ha ha though some of my friends think I'm crazy, from what I've seen of the build it looks good, I especially like the wire cut foam for the wings. As far as the nylock style fasteners they are not a problem, been flying the same ultralight for twenty seven years, it's now an experimental light sport category aircraft, and I use these fasteners exclusively because there cheap and the don't come off on their own, I use a three times on three times off and toss them out or if you can't turn them on to the bolt by hand through the plastic lock ring, there fine. As for vibration, well if you can see the instrument panel you'll be ok, but if it's shaking so bad that you can't, obviously there's something amiss. Never have needed any thead lock unless its engine related or a critical airframe component the requires its use. Only on my rc helos, I use that stuff on or my other flying projects, like full size helicopter and gyrocopter. Just be aware that flying an ultralight is no different than flying a full-size aircraft. When your butt is in the pilots seat, you can't just shake it off and tape up your busted what ever. Not to be morbib but I've lost friends over the years because of lack of training, maintenance, of just saying hey watch this. It usually does not end well. Good rule of thumb is make up a test plan. AC90-89B pertains to amateur​ and ultralight flight testing. Weight and Balance (this is so important, if it not correct the plane may not lift off at all or on the other hand may take off with out any warning and become completely uncontrolable, this little detail can at best wreck the plane and scab you up or at worst destroy the craft and kill you). You really need to know the numbers for the airfoil and especially for a biplane arrangement, and if their offset from each other. Ground handling Taxi testing / including fast taxis to discover low speed behavior prior to lift off. etc. Always test on a windless day. Early morning or evening around here. Perform short hops first. Don't try to force the machine to fly. There are lots of other tidbits so read what all you can. And get training even if your already a pilot. I've watched an airline pilot test fly an ultralight and had an engine out situation. Not realizing he could have made the field he opted to drop into a field of berries all supported by 6x6 posts and heavy wire rope. Cost him his career and six months in the hospital and therapy for a year. It almost cost him his life. Seatbelt dam near cut him in two. My favorite is: Maintain thy airspeed, least thee ground rise up and smite thee. If you have questions I'd be willing to answer any you may have. Safety is no accident. Brad.

1 g static load on the wings would be the MTOW of the aircraft along the wings, which is you, motors, fuel, and the weight of the plane itself. So if the aircraft is 350lbs maximum take off wieght (plane, cargo, passengers, fuel...), you need more weight to simulate 2G.

As an A&P and pilot - your g-loading is all wrong...you need to support the fuselage to test the wing to fuselage structure as well as the wing joints, rigging, structure, etc. You're looking for the weak link in the whole structure. Better to break it on the ground than a couple hundred feet up where the BRS does no good...When you calculate your g-load it needs to be at the MAXIMUM GROSS TAKE-OFF WEIGHT. Your wings need to support the full weight of the complete aircraft under load, not just your additional weight. So if you're planning on a 370 pound gross weight, then 1g will be 370 lbs. of weight. 2.5g will be 925 lbs. You should test to at least 3g which is 1110 lbs, but in reality 4g (1480 lbs.) to 4.5g (1665 lbs.) for safety margin. The reason you support the fuselage is to test the wing to fuselage connection along with the remainder of the wing structure. Do not use thread lock on the bolts. The fiber stop nuts are fine as designed. Any other bolt that would require loc-tit should have a castellated nut and cotter pin or aircraft grade safety wire. Look at Advisory Circular AC 43.13-1B - Acceptable Methods, Techniques, and Practices - Aircraft Inspection and Repair. It has almost all the information you're looking for.

Peter, please redo you load test as described by hogflyer62. Having it sitting upside down with no load on the wings is equivalent to roughly zero G not 1G as you stated since the wing structure was only supporting the weight of the wings (negligible). You need to support only the fuselage and load the wings the with the gross weight multiplied by the number of G's you want to test. Ideally at least 4. I am a licensed mechanical engineer and a private pilot. Please message me if I can help.

I believe his loading constraint adequately tests the wing spars and lift truss except the top wing spar/cabane attachment which could be separately analyzed. I also believe he subtracted the wing weight from the 2.5 g calculation to arrive at the total load of 640 lbs (20 boxes weighing 32 lbs each) which is appropriate. His description is off or at least confusing but I'm guessing his pilot weight is about equal to the wing weight so using only the empty weight of the plane, 254 lbs (the Part 103 limit), 2.5 g's is 635 lbs.

It sounded like you don't want to put wires on the tail. However, I'd suggest putting ones on anyway, simply because I've seen even model planes loose their rudder as gets more aerodynamic force than most people expect. Wires would help distribute the force.

At low speeds, you pickup a wing by stepping on the rudder. This strongly suggests that the rudder/vertical stabilizer needs wire bracing.

I am not sure what a "light GA aircraft (4-6)" means but electric aircraft are already quite successful in their role. Basically any hobby flying, glider, short commute or short race aircraft is basically improved by being electric. I didn't claim that it was the future of all aviation but current roles filled by combustion engines are better replaced with electric as well as other roles that combustion engines could not fill. Basically all certification will have people flying in electric planes because of the fuel savings. Red bull racing will be electric because of the improved thrust to weight. Gliders can use Regen. Quad copter tech can be applied to human flight. Get stoked dude, this is really cool stuff.

Regulations are the biggest problem… You need 30 min. reserve at the landing airport, and that's the capacity of the batteries. Also don't forget the high safety expectation... Nowaday it is really edgy, good for some special applications but far from mainstream. But I know about a big tech. company working on, thin Li batteries embedded/ built in non-structural parts. Builds with integrated batteries in the skin, will have more capacity with less weight…

There is nothing about complicated ICE that is safer than electric. This stuff is already on the market. Pipistrel has an electric trainer that can get you up for about an hour for 1$ in energy with a half hour of reserve. This is a game changer that opens up the mainstream to the consideration of how short hops can be utilized. There is already enough room for growth in that narrow range to make it mainstream. At 9:50 the four lower boxes near the fuselage are not simulating the lift on the wing with respect to the wing attachment to the fuselage but they are simply compressing the aerofoil section. The fuselage should have been supported from locations ahead of the leading edge and behind the trailing edge. Still having said that, all I can say is this young man has logic, reason and thinks very rationally and he does revise what he does to ensure safety. He is modest and humble enough to take advice. Well done young man.

are you using normal bolts when you asemble the plane whilst testing things, because the nylon in the bots degrades when you tighten them and losen them, so if you use nylon bolts you should change them before you fly.

LOL this is a real homebuilt, i'll never forget my dad building a Turbulent fuselage in the kitchen when i was 4. Wow thats 40 years ago. He sold it on, around 1980 ish. Its still flying today. Be extremly cairful. If you have ANY doubts about it as a plane or your ability as a pilot seek progessional help an no i dont mean a shrink. I mean qualified aircraft insepctors an maybe a flight test savvy pilot. Even highly over qualified pilots can and do make mistake's with ultralight flight tests. Good luck from UK.

No thread lock on full scale airplane. Cotter pins, safety wire, self locking nut and tight tolerance bolts is all you need. You've done a great job building that thing so far.

Most planes have hollow wings. It cuts weight and allows for wires for your control surfaces and motors. In Cesnas there are fuel tanks in a wing.

well an non cored section is 873grams vs 395grams (for 1 yard) that over a duration of 14.6 yards means 12lbs vs 28lbs. You tell me which is better LOL, and thats not even counting the nose ribs.

Awesome design! I made one in 1984, making me the youngest in the world to design and construct a manned airplane (aged 14). The 39 HP JPX Petrol engined 190 Kg 20 foot wingspan was test flown in 1998 by one of the top test pilots from England - Tom Knight. Applied for the Guiness Record but they turned me down saying "all FIRSTS and YOUNGEST are not records" :-)

As for your test, 16 boxes at 32 pounds each is 512lbs. Let's say your plane (with batteries and motors) will weigh 210 pounds (just a rough guess, feel free to correct me) and the pilot is maybe 160. That means 370lbs would be 1G. 2Gs would be 740lbs, and 2.5 would be 925lbs. Check your math. I'm just guessing on how much the finished product will weigh, but the answer you got seems way too light. I get 16 boxes @ 32# each = 1.38 Gs.

2gs in an aircraft are litererally nothing. when you are in a steep turn (60 degrees) you are at a constant g force of 2g. when you hit in such a turn a strong thermal you may end up at 3gs or more without even changing the curent aoa. Or when you have to exit a spin and pull out you end up well above the 2.5gs.

Plus he didn't incorporate the weight of the aircraft into it, it needs to be more than just his own weight, such as engines, batteries, the fuselage it's self.

A&P mechanic here. I wouldn't use threadlocker to safety bolts on. Nylon self locking nuts are fine as long as they are not used on a bolt with a rotational load, shear is fine. Also nylon lock nuts are single use so replace them if you take them off. Castlelatted nuts in conjunction with a properly applied cotter key Is a solid choice of you want to make sure a nut will not back off, just make sure the key fills the hole in the bolt. You don't want the vibrations to work harden the key and cause it to break.

As a FAA certified A&P, do not use Loctite on the self locking nuts. They have special nylon material that locks the nut on the bolt. Do not reuse nyloc nuts, however. Loctite is rarely used on airframes. Also, use nyloc nuts where the bolt is not subject to rotation, and drilled bolts with castle nut and cotter pin where the bolt is subject to rotation.

I've never seen loctite on any ultralight, if it needs a locking nut then mechanical locks are the way to go.

You need to add epoxy to the Pull-Pull wires on the rudder to make them more secure. I have seen people do that with their big RC airplanes.
