This thing is super cool and is RIGHT up my alley for my recording needs right now. And, dare I say, while it's a LIIIIITTLE more than I would have thought, it doesn't break the bank. I'm pretty well versed in MIDI (i use a Boss ES-8 to control patch changes on my Source Audio Collider and Boss MD-500; and back in the 90s my live rig was a MIDImess) but I've never used it for controlling guitar stuff in a DAW environment this way. The expression input is of particular interest to me because I've been shopping around for a solution for getting basic expression signals converted to MIDI CC for use in Logic. The ES-8 will do it, but I don't want to have to take it off my board and hook it up to Logic JUST to use that function. Believe it or not, your endorsement means something Pete! Thanks!

Hey Pete, thanks for the video. I just got mine and I was hoping you could help me out. I installed the editor software and firmware update from the Blackstar website. I can easily assign midi clock and cc commands to the footwitches and they work great. However I am unable to get the note to send the right message. I have tried connecting the controller to pedals to trigger samples, also to my mpc and protools software and I’ve run the controller though Midi-ox Even though the Blackstar software says that the foot switch is set to a specific note, like C 2 or B3 it doesn’t safe that to the pedal and the only note it seems to send is C-1 ??? Also even though it is set to send momentary signal it latches to “note on” when pressed and doesn’t send “note off” until it is triggered again. (BTW “momentary” works perfectly in CC messages) I know it’s a new product but have you heard about this before? Is it a bug? Any idea on how to fix it? I have uninstalled the software and firmware update twice on my PC and my husbands Mac. The other messages work great, but I really need to the send “note on/off” to trigger my sample/loops I have also emailed Blackstar support and the official forum. Hoping to find a solution soon. Thanks for you time and have a nice day

For that price point I'd expect it to have a guitar audio input like the Xsonic devices to be completely stand-alone..... Since you'll still need and audio interface for your audio input I think the most affordable option is still the Behringer FCB1010 because it already has 2 expression pedals built in and twice the amount of switches, The price of this Blackstar is higher than the price of the FCB1010 + a Scarlet Solo (or other cheap interfaces like Behringer U-Phoria or Presouns) and you can do the same and more
@poulwinther
@poulwinther 3 жыл бұрын
Your comment doesn't really make any sense. FCB doesn't have USB and Scarlet Solo doesn't have MIDI in, so even combined the two products cannot control a DAW or any software amp sim. Besides, everybody has an interface already so why should the connection be on the foot controller? On top of that, just the programming alone makes this more than it's price more valuable than the FCB.

pc and mac... us linux guys are used to doing it all ourselves out here in the wilderness anyway... but it still sucks never being asked to dance.. i've been eyeing 3 options for signal processing: a modeling amp (expensive AF) some sort of all in one "floor" effects unit (cheap AF, quickly outdated) software based processing with external midi-slaved controls, like what you've just shown. im heavily leaning towards this third option - there is a decent pedal/amp/cab sim program for linux called "guitarix", but there are a few conditions your distro (operating system) needs to meet in order to run it (low latency kernel, input/output bridging, etc) and piling sketchy github midi driver patches on top of all of that sounds like dental surgery... i've only been team linux for a few years now, so if there are any old school FOSSils out there with any advice in this area, i'd listen to it. thanks!

It all depends on your software. For example with the helix software you could do snapshots- Which would have spill over and all that, so pretty much instant. But if you use Different plug-ins from different companies and enabled them and disable them with patch changes you could have a large gap so it depends on what you’re using.

FIRST - $179 is a very, very reasonable price for what this thing does, IMHO. Second, I know some players can manage, but I can't handle any latency when I'm playing guitar - it's intolerable to me. Playing keyboards, I don't mind a little bit, because some real keyboards like organs have some latency built in, and there's a difference between MIDI latency and audio latency. But guitar? No - this is why I bought a HX Stomp. The latency on it is too small to feel. But I've never played a computer interface yet that didn't introduce noticeable latency for guitar. So I'm very curious about this device.
@macalex414
@macalex414 3 жыл бұрын
I use this with Ableton running amp sims and switch instantly. I found that setting my sample rate as high as possible and buffer size as low as possible with no glitches has a round trip latency of around 2ms perfectly acceptable for guitar (this is the same delay as standing a meter away from an amp) something like a Helix floorboard has a latency of 1.8ms to put this into perspective.
@budgetguitaristcom
@budgetguitaristcom 3 жыл бұрын

@macalex414
@macalex414 3 жыл бұрын
budgetguitarist.com haha it’s only an i7 pc. I found that upping the sample rate gave me the biggest benefits. 192khz is totally unnoticeable in regulates to latency. As long as I don’t do much processing then it runs really smooth. I found that it depends on your drivers too. Presonus drivers have worked well for me.
@budgetguitaristcom
@budgetguitaristcom 3 жыл бұрын
@@macalex414 I'm also wondering if Ableton is part of the key. I use Albleton in my live rig because it's the most CPU efficient DAW on the planet IMHO. I'll have to play around with that. I own the Stomp, so I can buy Native for $199 I think. I'm not sure I want to replace the Stomp with software on my laptop, because the Stomp is a little beast, but it would make one heck of a backup if the Stomp dies.
@Scotty_Russell_Music
@Scotty_Russell_Music 3 жыл бұрын
you should check out "asio4all" driver for super low latency times. I'll get a "round trip" of 3ms in ableton and that lower latency than using my focusrite's own drivers. But i concur, I also demand zero latency for guitar.
