I had a 2004 S in Electric Blue..I thought this was it! As far as reliability goes, it never gave me any problems until around 200k. First thing to go was one of the Xenon headlamps which was around $700 to replace. Then it was the interior door releases. I mean, why did the Germans have to go and screw up something as basic as getting out of the damned car?!? When the car started overheating for unknown reasons (actually, it was explained in this vid) I knew it was time to let it go. I loved that car, but it wasn't what I'd call an 'heirloom piece'. Oh yeah, you've got a new sub. Can't wait to see this thing scoot. Good idea keeping the Getrag transmission as it's the one thing that's relatively bulletproof.

If you don't do a really good alignment your going to burn the motor up much quicker than expected. Just my 2cents.

@@g60force maybe I didn't explain properly. You have to align the motor coupler to the transmission coupler. You absolutely can it's done everyday all over the world in manufacturing. Shifting isn't actually needed, depending on how much battery power he's using he can probably just start in 3rd gear and leave it there. Even if, for some reason, he does need need to shift, he can hit neutral then move the shifter to the next gear with a slight pressure and it'll fall into place when the syncros line up...basically in the same way that it's possible to drive your standard car without using your clutch after you start moving.

@@pete1973x Reverse you don't shift into unless you're completely stopped, so no issue there. As far as stopping itself, if you're not applying throttle to an electric motor, it will stop spinning as soon as the wheels stop turning (unlike a gas motor that's always running), so you don't need to disengage the motor from the transmission.

I Don’t know anything about this stuff, but if I was to guess I would say that using that controller he got, that cost as much as the whole budget, he will be able to put the motor into some type of free spinning mode and then add force at a rate similar to a clutch, wild guess.

Recently had my 09 mini S die after suffering the infamous “Death rattle”, was told it was done for and I was super bummed since it’s what I learned to drive in and I’d really hate to see it waste away. Your project is really giving me the motivation to learn and hopefully one day bring it back to life. Keep it up! Can’t wait to see how this turns out :)

You can learn a lot of basic mechanical (and social) skills at your age already, just try to land and inter job at a local car shop. Ask around if someone knows somebody, or literally walk into places and ask. With that in your pocket you can go after a degree.

You start with MIT and then go into pre med for 4 years and decide that you don't want to do that anymore and then after you drop out of pre-law because you failed the bar exam you go down to your nearest tire shop and work there for 3 years while you're stacking tools along the way and learning what you can... and after that you'll find everything else that you need to know on youtube or a quick forum search.
