Apologies in advance for the unorganized mess of words. If I were to describe Paul in one word, it'd be "Genre-Savvy." We don't know much about him, but from what we do know he does seem to understand the gravity of what he has and what he's doing. He's definitely heard of stories where ghosts or AI or other supernatural things are embedded in games. (This could explain the videos being posted to 4chan, where Ben Drowned started) In fact, I'd argue that once he unlocked the Newmaker Plane and related stuff, he's all but (subconsciously) concluded that he better start believing in ghost stories, because he's in one. But while he believes this, he doesn't necessarily have to consciously agree with it. In fact, let's look at what he says in Petscop 6, about this subject: “This game is trying very hard to make it seem like, uhm.. Like there's an entity in it. Like a.. A ghost, or an AI, trying to communicate with me. It's interesting. But you know, the way you know, that there's a ghost in a game trying to communicate with you, is if it comes out, if it stops being distant, and it comes out and you can have a, you know.. A real time back and forth with it. Uh. And it stops being so one way.” There's a weird sort of tone to his statement here. In fact, it seems to me as if he's trying to deny what's going on. He's trying to justify what's happening, by applying a set of criteria that the game isn't matching so that he can ease his mind about the whole thing. In fact, in Petscop 7 where we encounter the first censored object, after Paul briefly whispers "oh my god..." at 8:10, we hear him state this (after talking about Mike's eyebrows on Care's face, to distract himself?): "It puts... this... I dunno, maybe that's just something that it puts... in any room." Paul, who's normally collected and not too disturbed by what might disturb others (his "that's a dead kid. ... yup." reaction to the graveyard, his jocular "whoops!" to text spilling out of the box, his nonchalant reaction to being told to turn off the playstation by Tool, etc.), is starting to get shaken. He saw something there, something important. But what was it? I think we have enough to go on for a theory after seeing his reaction to the censored item in Petscop 9, he stammers out a "wh..." at 8:19, then just exclaims a "What the fuck." at 8:21. I think the way Paul states these things is just as important as what he actually says. First, notice how he says "What the fuck." It's not a question, no interrogative, no uptalk indicating any sort of confusion. There's a finality to how he says it, as if he's coming to terms with something he knew in the back of his mind since Petscop 1. He's been trying to deny it, making jokes, attempting to rationalize what he sees, but the rotating red crystal has something inside of it that he can't just argue away. That's why he's not letting us see it, not yet. I think the first censored item is a personal affect of Paul's. Something that he's intimately familiar with but is common enough that it can be in a kid's bedroom. Perhaps a toy, though this particular toy would be meticulously detailed, based entirely off of Paul's own (e.g. a toy spaceship with the exact same design, color scheme, etc.). Paul sees it and realizes it belongs to him, but it's common enough that it could feasibly just be (one hell of a) coincidence. The second censored item is something much more personal to Paul. I personally think it's a picture of his mother, who I think is closely related to the story in a way we'll learn later. There's no way that could be in the game without Petscop being something closely related to Paul in a way he doesn't realize yet.

something I like, though. While his character model turning black is part of the story, and is a callback to the note that came with the game, that's the sort of glitch that could be reasonably explained in a game of the time. Nothing about that glitch is really.. weird? besides the lighthouse coming back, signaling it was intentional by the devs. Like you could explain it: Character turns black as he goes down the stairs, colored as he goes up the stairs to simulate fading into darkness. If he glitches outside without going up the stairs, game is never instructed to recolor him

If we keep the "Love Me, Love Me Not" connection, the demo (and the counter he comes across in game) is a Love Me Love Me Not counter with Even = Not and Odd = Love. So how do you get Care to come down without killing herself? You lie, and say someone loves you by ending the game with a Love Me in the form of -1. I like how the description says "It won't be a lie for long" as though there is going to be much more with Care, it almost makes me think there might be some sort of happy ending, at least to her story. I don't think this is going to end happily for her. The way the info is being laid out to me seems like care nlm might be the girl whose sister disappeared with the windmill. If that is the case the idea that she is caught with a lie may mean that her husband wasn't in love with her at first but slowly grew to. If you coupled that with the fact their daughter looks exactly like her sister and the only time we heard a description of a family is those creepy notes describing how "excited" the father was that his daughter couldn't grow eyebrows, a trait that if shared by both daughter and sister characters would make the resemblance all the more special makes me think we are in for a fucked up ride...

PETSCOPDATE! Basic recap of everything in this episode: -A Petscop demo? Odd. It crashes after we reach 0 on what was before the piano counter. -The 'I WALKED DOWNSTAIRS AND WHEN I GOT TO THE BOTTOM, INSTEAD OF PROCEEDING, I TURNED THE RIGHT AND BECAME A SHADOW MONSTER MAN" note became essentially a prophecy (has someone played this game and done that before?). We end up using that to be the shadow monster, get into a version of the Newmaker Plane where the windmill exists, and reverse its rotation. Then we go back to normal and find its no longer there. -However, we got a new face from that, and so, a new child's room opens to us! It has an interesting thing about a friend of someone. Apparently the subject and their friend went to a windmill together, and somehow both the friend and the windmill vanished. Later, the subject and another friend that was with them married, and their child was apparently a reincarnation of the vanished friend. I'd theorise, the child is Care and the missing friend is Michael, explaining why doing Care's face room with Michael's eyebrows brought up the redacted/censored text earlier. The message is ended '-Rainer, Newmaker'. Did Newmaker write this? -A passage through the room leads us to a new area with two presents. One contains a green key, the other, a LARGE censored object, causing our narrator to respond simply with "What the fuck." -The camera begins acting up. After some exploring, we reach a new area, and go inside another present. Angelic choir-like music plays over a black screen. Then things go back to normal. -We walk and find a house that entering leads us back to the "Even Care" area, whose name definitely has some significance now - even Care what? Is it the start of a statement? We manage to set the treadmill counter to -1, and after walking a bit more, the game freezes. -We return to the spot where Care was on fire now. She's intact, and we add her to the list of caught pets - Care NLM, specifically. Apparently, to catch her, we had to lie; as some commenters have already mentioned, this reflects the whole Loves me/Loves me not thing in earlier Care-related episodes. We lied, turning 0 into -1 and ending it on a 'Loves me' square. Apparently, the lie may not be a lie forever, and we may be able to turn her back into 'Care A' - 'regular' care? They also mention 'closing the loop' - may have to do with the reincarnation thing. -Lastly, we deposit Care NLM in the Child Storage area (or whatever it was called). Thankfully, we can pick her up just as easily from her room if we need her again. Quite a few major revelations in this episode. It's nice to see things beginning to tie together!

its also worth noting that in the new room (when he first entered) there seemed to be another version of the character, the 'fake' character was standing by the note, i assume they were reading it, then they walked to the "hidden room". when this fake character exited the room the player checked the room out and whatever else, but i find it weird that the player followed the pattern of the fake character. this is probably nothing but i feel the new room is that of the players. i probably sound stupid but i thought id bring it up since the only other NPCs are the pets, Care, the shadow person (most likely Michael), and the "quitter". (im not counting the other characters since they dont have a proper character model and new characters without a "body" are introduced fairly frequently)

You then played the X loves me X loves me not game which ended in X loves me not and prompted Care to fall in the corrupted state. However her description says: To catch her, you had to lie, but it may not be a lie forever. Got me thinking that the character lied to her about loving her, but there is a chance he might still fall in love with her.

Okay, I may be roughly 5 years later to commenting, but I was rewatching the series, and I have a theory about what's in the box... if anyone is still reading comments. It reminded me of the note from Care's room, when Rainer guesses at which child the reader (Marvin) will go after next. It states, "When you find her room, the passage to my right will lead to her. She'll appear from the darkness, limping, and I'll shoot her in the head." To the right of the note would be the area where Paul goes in Windmill Girl's room. There's also the use of the word "find" which reminds me of the sign saying "You found her." All this to say, my wild guess of what's being censored is connected to the the last part of that note, whether literally or figuratively.

This is just an assumption because it said you can turn Care NLM into Care A. Edit: and by lying I assume it means the love me love me not game where you pulled the last petal for they love me not. It then went on to say it was a lie but perhaps not for long so I guess you can have a choice with a branching path that you can either get Care to feel better or feel worse and that everyone really doesn't love her

I imagine it wouldn't have made a difference, since he would have needed to write his script, record it, edit out any gaffs or redo it if editing it out isn't possible, edit the footage, make sure visuals and audio match during the editing process, then finally get it downloaded to youtube. Also notice every even number is red, and in Petscop 2 every even petal turns the shack red (even 0 is red). After changing the number to -1 (not red) at 11:50 he is suddenly able to pick up Care NLM at the shack (also not red/bugged out anymore). Also note that the icon in the background in the Even care treadmill room is the same icon in the box in the shack.

I know im incredibly late but i've been trying to piece together some remaining Petscop puzzles and I noticed something very odd. I think most of us know the connection from the treadmill in pen's room and the flower picking next to Care's shack but one thing i noticed about this episode relates to pen's catching puzzle. In pen's catching puzzle, you turn the treadmill to project a clone of yourself in a different location when you step on the key, and in the beginning of this video, the treadmill is set to 0. In this video, paul's clone is visible in Lina's room at 5:06. Idk if im reading into it or if that was intended but i thought it was interesting.
