From what I can tell, the biggest difference between a wolf and a domesticated dog are their vocalizations. Most wolf-dogs seem to growl and grunt regularly, whilst most regular dogs only do so in threat displays.

Wolves are very vocal communicators, even amongst each other. Here he's on his back, exposing his belly which is a clear sign of comfort/safety and his light growling is essentially purring.

@@degen7278I’ve never actively petted a wolf dog hybrid but I worked with injured wolves (wild) in Scandinavia, the fur is not that soft. It’s quite rough. It’s also very thicc because it protects them from the cold (really fking hard to get through when you’re trying to vaccinate them against diseases 😂) wild wolves have also always shit stuck in the fur (leaves, small branches, small stones, I found an acorn once which makes me think there was a squirrel who buried it in the fur) Texture wise, the other commenter said steel wool, which is pretty accurate

I agree this is why I think husky, malamutes, German shepherd, and malnois are all very very vocal. They are the races of dog with highest natural wolf content in their blood. Breeders for generations have every so often reintroduced wolf blood into the line to keep it genetically strong.

When wolves and dogs growl like this, it means good. Good boy. I had a mutt that used to do this. I am kind of thinking it might have contained some wolf in him. But we thought it was a german shepard and alaskan and pit mixed dog; we called him Marty. I live in the south U.S.A. It was a weird looking dog that we picked up as a stray on a dirt path. But smart. It liked doing rounds around the huge farm community, but it would always come back to our house for food and sleep. We could let it roam and it would keep to itself with the other dog (pit mutt) we had. They had a pack with all the other dogs in the neighborhood. They would guard against snakes, coyotes, foxes, and sometimes bear. Very smart dog mutt. Like every month, we'd hear the whole neighborhood barking and everybody knew something would be up and humans needed to check it out. It was always some predator in the area. I never had another dog like that one. It would coordinate with the other dogs and they had watchmen plans..LoL. Yeah, I'm thinking wolf or something. He weighed 100lbs or a little more. He would greet all the other children in the neighborhood at the bus stop (which were also my friends) and walk them home. He never got into fights. Just a kind watch dog. Very weird. No other dog would dare fight him; not even the pit-bulls. He actually made other dogs better. True alpha. I could talk to it and it knew my dad and siblings words. It was really use to humans. It could logically decipher situations and actually help out sometimes. I'll never have another dog that did that type of stuff. I live in a farm community. My neighbor has horses and donkeys and mules and cows. Many times Marty and my neighbors dogs would chase off some coyotes. My neighbor saw it and told me about it. We all heard the racket at night. I think Marty heard the call signal and went for backup. I wish my dad would have done a background check on that dog. It was a very smart dog/mutt (or whatever Marty was). My dad actually took good care of that dog and gave him 6 months doctor visits and shots. Marty wasn't gun shy but we never used him for hunting anything. Marty was just a really aware high I.Q. dog-mutt.
