'Sporty hybrid berline
The new Peugeot 308 looks as sharp as it drives. Especially in this GT version, which over here is equipped with the (temporarily available) ‘GT Pack Business’ the most luxurious version. But from now on, we will call it the ‘GT’.
Speaking of which, is this 308 Hybrid the successor of the previous 308 GT that we tested several years back? It might as well could be, because the previous GT has slightly less horsepower and slightly less torque so this new 308 Hybrid with its increased power and torque could be its follow-up.
That increase in numbers is obviously due to the fact it now has electric assistance in the form of a battery pack and electric motor. In total the car now delivers 225 hp and 360 Newtonmeters of torque. According to the stats those figures will make the car launch from 0-100 km/h in just 7.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 235 km/h. In reality this specific test car wasn’t as fast as those figures would suggest, more on that in our coming ‘Overview Test Results’ video. Perhaps this could be occasional for this specific car.
But this car offers more than performance, with its sharp looks and ‘Bleu Vertigo’ paint job it is certainly an eye-catcher on the road. It also has a lot of tech onboard. And that means a hybrid powertrain consisting of a 1.6 liter 4-cilinder turbo-petrol engine assisted by the electric motor and battery pack. The hybrid engine is linked to a high-tech, 8-speed e-EAT8 electric automatic transmission with available paddle-shifting behind the steering wheel. The response to the input of the left and right paddle is pretty quick and gives you more control over the flow and available power of the powertrain, essential when driving sporty and in approaching and exiting corners.
You have all of the creature comforts that you’ll ever need in a car in this segment. Nice and slightly bucketed front seats which have a heating- and massage function in numerous settings. The sports steering wheel with ‘GT’-logo also has a heating function and sits nicely in your hands; perfect for cornering. And the steering feel is top-notch, it really does a good job of delivering sharp and direct responses to your input. As with all new Peugeots with an automated 8-speed transmission the gear lever is gone and it now features a small lever or tumble switch if you like for selecting the different driving modes.
Other features include an updated and very informative 3D i-Cockpit dashboard display containing a lot of information about the status of the drive modes and range of both the electric drive as well as the petrol engine and hybrid drive. The center screen did also get a large update and now has a high-res image and nice animations of the car and how it uses and/or regenerates energy on the go. The layout of the main buttons can be changed to your own liking. It’s amazing what they can do with these modern screens nowadays.
Aside from all the tech that this car features it still remains a very practical ‘berline’ as the French are used to call it with lots of storage space, a large luggage area and the seating in the rear is also quite decent.'
