Peugeot 406 HDi Engine Service

Gday, have a 2001 406 hdi have problems losing boost. Solenoid keeps cutting out loosing vacuum and going into limp mode. Is there a group chat of site that is helpful. Here in NZ cant seem to get experienced help. Cheers

Hi there There is a 406 owners club forum in the uk, i think its a bit dead now like most forums. Facebook groups have took over in that regard. There is a 406 owners group on facebook, i know the UK one is quite good. Also quite a few HDI owners club pages.

+redmikekite You have the reply function blocked i cant click reply to your comment. The egr cleaner is up to yourself the 406 doesnt tend to have the same egr problems that blight newer diesels but its good to give it a clean out now and then. The whole unit being the fuel filter housing? Its not necessary to change all that, just be careful with the fuel lines disconnected not to let dirt in, covering the pipes is what i did. Cleaning with a lint free rag is important you dont want to use something like kitchen paper that might introduce bits into the fuel system

Hi I always service my 2001 hdi but have never used an egr cleaner do you think i should and also I was told never to change just the fuel filter but instead do the whole unit in case dirt or frag gets into the high pressure fuel pump and causes damage, what are your thoughts on this as i noticed you covered up the hoses to prevent this and cleaned the housing out which looks ok to me as long as you are carefull

after doing exactly what u did and turning on the ignition a few times, i started the car but it died on me 3 seconds in and it wont start anymore (it tries to!) i think it has something to do with the fuel filter…what can i do?

my car does not fill up the fuel filter case when turning on the ignition… its a 2003 406 HDI90 (2.0) it has 2 fuel hoses and 1 electrical plug

Hi there If the fuel filter has not reached its full capacity it may not start, it could take more turns on of the ignition but also check that when the in tank pump is whirring that the fuel filter house isnt leaking out any diesel

@@peugeotCitroen2CV thanks for tour reply! turn out my engine doesnt prime the fuel automatically but manually via a small rubber ball which needs pumping.

@@sezamdonaldo5335 Ah is it a 90? That ball, the priming bulb you need to keep pumping at it until it goes firm, possibly remove the end of that pipe where it goes into the filter housing and double check that its pumping diesel okay, put that pipe back on and then check the other end to make sure diesel is passing out the other side of the filter on its way to the pump. Use an old drinks bottle to capture the escaping diesel.

can i use egr cleaner in my peugeot 406 1.8 gasoline engine? does it make a difference is the car diesel or gasoline?

Fani Emmery Its not usually a problem on the petrol engines their exhaust gasses are generally much cleaner, diesel are thicker and sootier. The petrol engine may actually have no egr valve im not sure if it does or not.

Honestly i dont know, there are too many different types of oil out there and i dont really pay much attention to them. i just buy the oil from a motor factors and ask them to give me the right oil for the car, the owners manual will also recommend the correct oil. The 406 owners club would also be worthwhile finding out from as other members with the petrol 406 would be able to tell you what sort of oil they are using.

Quartz 7000 5W-40 or Quartz 9000 5W-40 should be OK for 1.8 petrol, or anything else meeting similar standards. Requirements depend on climate and usage. You can check the handbook for the 406 on Peugeot's website which has more details. Interesting to see that both Peugeot and Total recommend Total Quartz Ineo ECS 5W-30 for the 406 HDi's - this is a newer fully-synthetic oil developed for PSA diesel engines. I think I might try it out in my 2.0 HDi next service.

This is diesel but where is the filter for Petrol? I have a peugeot 406 1999 petrol.

Is it a 1.8 2.0 or 3.0 petrol? Im not too sure on where the fuel filter is as I've never owned or had the opportunity to work on a petrol 406, 406oc is the best place to find out where the filter is.

That haynes manual would be handy if its in PDF form i could save it on my iPad instead of having to carry the big book about.
