That's a nice gesture mate, saving a new driver from a garage that didn't care about the car. If only all mechanics gave that sort of service! The first test you did on the cooling system, testing for combustion gasses, we used to call that a 'sniff test'.

I love 309's. My dad had a 1992 309 GLD. Smooth, Economical, Reliable, Comfortable and Handled extremely well.

I’m 90% confident I saw this exact car a few days ago! Nice to see it on the channel. I especially noticed it because of the relatively old license plate! Pretty cool for a first car! Happy for the young man to see that it was probably only a misfire!

Very interesting! I am facing possible head gasket issues with my own car at the moment, so this was very interesting to watch! Looks like a nice little car. Don't see many of those around these days!

This car model was supposed to be the successor of the Talbot Horizon but then Peugeot bought Talbot and decided to take that design and turn it into a Peugeot 309.

It was named Talbot Arizona right up till production start.

1zz 1.8 litre Toyota engines are legendary... but you throw them away if a head gasket etc. blows. "Not repairable"....economically... I have one. Religious maintenance, coolant changes etc. are a wise move....

Psa engine's were very durable.

It could also be a crack in the cylinder head that only develops when the engine gets warm. I've had this issue on a BMW E36, which I thought was perfect until I drove it several hours on the Autobahn, suddenly the coolant gauge started 'flipping', and the header tank was empty. I let it cool down and filled up the coolant, and driven it many km's since without filling up coolant. I didn't know it at the time, but this type of engine was known for this issue.

Was that a noisy fan belt? It might as well be you that changes that and does the gasket and plugs and gets a new oil breather. It will enable you to add a bit more to the guy's small bill. Nice job Seppo.

I think we're missing some information here and need to go back to the beginning with the explanation of the fault... they/you mixed up the definition of white smoke. Smoke or steam? Steam, yes as you say exacerbated by your cold weather but if it was smoke, that's a different story. If it was indeed smoke, Id be looking at the vacuum hose supply to the brake booster. When they start to fail, brake fluid leaks into the diaphragm housing and gets sucked into the intake and that causes a lot of smoke. As you noticed, a misfire would explain some of the symptoms. I'm suspicious that the engine has been pressure cleaned before the sale. That engine bay is too clean for an average owner to have maintained to that level. The engine has that 'I've just been degreased and pressure washed' look and that valve cover leak would no doubt have made more mess than you are seeing.. it would explain the water in around the spark plug and also the noisy fan belt...

Those coolant tests are prone to giving false positives unless the coolant is very very clean

If a cylinder is injesting coolant that sparkplug will usually be cleaner than the others.
