Hold onto the bolts! Having a bucket of spare OE bolts is invaluable

@@PointNemo9not at all, depending on the bolt. I’m talking about reusing non-TTY bolts. Sometimes having a spare bolt can save you from having to order one and putting the project on hold

Hey, offering some light on the chain situation. that tentioner guide has been hit by something for sure. judging by the position of the tentioner piston, thats a stretched chain for sure. the wear on the guides looks to be at least 60k miles. for the oil to be black is normal for diesels, soot from the combustion slipping past the piston rings, into the oil. A well kept diesel will not be this blackened inside though. that turbo did go bad because of the lack of service. that would be feeding oil into the intake as you stated. a runaway is very possible. my guess is that it did runaway, and had valvefloat, smashed the valves just before the engine bearings would've seized. i absolutely love your content! Keep on! oh, and make your life easier, dont be afraid to use the UGGA some more haha

18 -20 years in the game, i say you hit the nail on the head when you said was this a runaway engine 👌 i wrote that near the beginning of the video that was definitely a runaway engine with any doubt, but all Modern diesel have a throttle flap that should easily provent a runaway situation if you turn off the engine, strange

My god, I am sure we are related in some twisted way. Watching you work is like watching a video of me working. I talk to myself so much, it's not even funny. A lesson in oil changes...change your own oil between each annual service, and none of this will happen. Basically do an oil change every 6,000 miles.........less wear, no sludge = long life!

Great video - just like a detective story! What you need is an engine to pull down, repair and replace and get it going again. I can't tell you the thrill of doing that and starting it up and getting it running again as a reasonably proficient amateur mechanic! Last one was a Rover V8 which was a peach to work on.

The injector on 1 looked a different colour as well. In the days when I was an TIR truck driver, Eastern European truck drivers all worked in the workshop before going out on the road, what you just did, they would do on the side of the road if needs be, paid little money and drove in pairs.

chain streatch is common on this engine causing the timing to jump ,the tensioner is nearly fully extended and chain almost touching together , normal for tensioner to spring in and out without oil pressure

I’ve stripped a few engines in the past and it’s really enjoyable. It’s the pressure of putting them back together that’s a little stressful. I only had one minor problem with any of them and it’s a learning curve. It’s handy if one of your neighbours is a mechanic though!

Indeed. I had to replace one in my brother's Renault Trafic after it went lame and a Nissan X-Trail he bought from Copart had one with a hole in the block where No.3 con-rod had punched right through! He bought another Trafic and that overheated and seized up on a motorway trip on its return journey after it was given to someone else! I would steer well clear of any vehicle with an M9R fitted.

I recon the owner was intent on not spending money on maintenance, hence the sludge. My v70 D5 says oil change at around 20k km. i do it at half the recommended mileage. if everybody paid attention to simple TLC each car would last a long time.

It’s good to get into a routine when disassembling engines starting with trays and pots sounds like the boring stuff but even on a scrap engine marking nuts bolts washers in bags and bigger parts in trays it will make more sense when you rebuild engines and the plus side when you’re finished there’s not so much tidying up to do at the end of the day 😊

I had to get a specialist in to remove the injectors from my M9R engine. Each one took 8 Tonnes of pressure to remove. I broke the top off one of the injectors with a slide hammer.

Yes, they get well and truly seized in there, mainly due to water leaking in from the poorly designed scuttle seal on Trafics, Vivaros, etc.

The clues to my eyes were the lack of oil in the sump, it had an existing leak, the oil in the intake pipe to the turbo and the excessive play in the turbo. I came to a similar conclusion. Definitely oil starvation due to runaway. Add to that the oil being sludge suggests a lack of routine maintenance. Well diagnosed sir.

I've removed many a piston using wood like that. Even had to press one out at the Engine shop one day. I doubt you would get the piston out the bottom as they are not ment to come out that way. Remember if you are saving conrods etc to sell that they are matched that is machined as a set. In a modern engine like that they should be numbered. Same with the main caps. You can get bits to fit sockets that fit in your drill. More tha adequate for those sump bolts once lossend.

I remember when time I had to use my 19 inch long KTI screwdriver to take the filter off of a 79 Bobcat. Actually flexed that bit thing, those things can get stuck fast.

I have some thoughts . I have the same van . If the indicator stalk has been changed for a generic one with out the button on the end ( the bit that selects function on the dash / odometer ) it will show oil “ ok “ all the time . Even when it’s empty . Or at least mine does. This can lead to a false sense of good oil . Just a thought .

It's easier to turn the injectors a tiny bit in each direction first. Tiny little turns and wiggles and the lubricant will slowly seep down, allowing them to come up a bit easier.
