See we are all different! I love Phals because of the floppy leaves. They remind me of dogs with floppy ears, and they are just too cute! :)))

Hi Dani. This video made me remember that I owe you an update on my experiment with the bare root Phal. I have 2 conclusions: 1) Phal roots don't mind it at all if their roots are exposed to the air, but... 2) If they are not attached to a surface that holds even the tinniest bit of moisture, they cannot get fully hydrated no matter how many times a day you water them. So, I mounted it bare rooted on wood and the very first day it plumped back up. A few days later I added some moss here and there and now it's leaves are even plumber than they were when it was potted. I have to admit, I was bored just like you with my Phals but now that I've seen how they look mounted I'm in love with them more than I ever was. All the rest of them are getting mounted as soon as possible. So, I guess that is how you rekindle your romance with your Phals. You mount them and they go from boring to spectacular in a day, lol!
@MissOrchidGirl

John John yes true they do look better mounted, but for me it would mean watering them more often so I am trying the middle solution.. potted but hanged :P

Yeah I totally know how you feel lol I love the plant in bloom and mine are doing so well now but waiting for them to bloom just feels like forever!!! I'm starting to really love cattleyas since I bought the two from the last orchid show I went to. The two have new growths and its growing fast. Similar story with my oncidiums. And phal foliage does take up a lot of space. I'm also more interested in other orchids now then I was a year ago so I would like more variety in my collection.

At one point, I used to dislike orchids with pseudobulbs, I didn't like that bulb look, but after seeing your videos, and seeing more in person, I love them! I can understand not liking the complex hybrid phals though, but it can happen with other flowers too like those grocery store Rose bouquets(they all look the same, and at some point they lose their uniqueness). Although, I have to admit that I love those "complex hybrid" light pink phals, like the one you have. I don't know why, but the softness of the color looks peaceful. But I guess a good thing about complex phals is that you can use them to decorate your home, while other phals such as the species types are suited more for hobby growing since they don't make as big of a statement when using them for home decor. :)

+Diego Pineda That's true, Phals have a charm to them and can make any room a lot more elegant, depends on the setting I guess and how much used to them you are :) I just wish they had smaller leaves lol

+MissOrchidGirl I guess it really does depend. the run of the mill phalaenopsis seem more for table settings, as opposed to phals like the violacia, it bellina that won't make as big of an impression at a dinner party or something.

Hello Danny. I'm working up my best friend (sister-kin), from black thumb slowly to more of a greenish one. I started her out with a cactus then to a hyacinth now a mini-phal. She wants to be able to have some of the other kinds of orchids like I have. So far she's doing well. I can't let her see this video and your beautiful blooms because she'll want more phals! :) She doesn't know it but I ordered a dendrobium for her for an Easter gift. She loves the foliage on mine. I only have three phals and two mini phals. Thankfully I started watching your videos before I bought more of them:))) my newest acquisition is a miltoniopsis Lennart Karl Gotting 'red'. I can't wait for it to get here. Anyhoo, thanks for helping me along the way with your vids and advice!!

I'm sort of over them myself. I think that as you progress in the hobby you just naturally become interested in more variety, etc. I've seen it happen with myself and others. The funny thing is that my partner has now become interested in orchids and I have to stop him buying every NOID rescue Phal. we see. It's difficult when you just want to save them. Anyway, we have plenty of room in the house where they will grow, so I'll just wait for his hobby to "evolve" a bit. I've managed to interest him in Phal. species and primary hybrids, so he can learn more about growing and about specific cultural requirements for species types. They're all really beautiful and I do love all kinds of orchids, but I'm CRAZY about Cattleya hybrids and intergenerics. I love your Phals, and we're going to start hanging them this year as well. I hate staking them too, although our Phal. Schilleriana requires it....the spike is so thin and delicate it can easily break from the weight of all those blooms. Happy growing!

Hi Danni, I love seeing your collection of orchids, And your phals are gorgeous :) I now have 4 of them since mothersday, As they are the easiest to get hold of, I also just bought an oncidium, it had no flowers so I don't know what it looks like, Plus the jewel orchid, I bought that appears to be dying, The only way I can get them is by ebay, Some are well packed, And some are falling to bits and in big trouble by the time they arrive where the packaging was so poor so I don't know if they will survive, I have created a little area for them where they all get bright light and I also bought an humidifier and a hygrometer to try to make sure they all get what they need, I also bought the bloom, and the grow, ferterliser by focus but I'm not sure how they should be used because the plants need root help and bloom help due to the way they where posted , do i do the roots one week water the following week bloom the following week, I would appriciate you help, As I'm finding this a bit confusing, Thanks Rosemary :)

Rosemary457 Hi Rosemary, well if you are looking for shops to buy orchids from, here is a video where I compiled all the shops that my viewers recommend depending on region kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYu8iGSEh9SMkLc about fertilising, I usually alternate them yes, every 2 weeks I use a different fert. For the orchids that just finished blooming and are just growing small new shoots I use the grow one more, for about 2 months and then start to use the bloom too.

Interesting way to grow your Phals. They do look more natural when allowed to hang. I see you have them rigged up to a thick cord? Perhaps I could use a similar system (if you describe it :), to back my Phals away from the bright south-west window sill, and allow them to droop naturally. BTW, I don't like the stakes either, but I do appreciate the foliage and arial roots that go wandering around!
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 8 жыл бұрын
+Marcella Miller well the cord is just one that we used to hang clothes to dry.. we didn't use it anymore as they shaded the flowers too much but I kept the chord. It was mounted on 2 bars on the ceiling and is sold in my home country as hanging wire. You just need to fix the bars on the ceiling really well so they don;t fall, that is all :) the wire is similar to mountain climbing wire, very resistant. Hope this helps :) I am not growing them like this anymore though since I moved.

I'm really getting into species phals lately, there are several that I want to get. I'm wondering if my sister will take some of my big old boring hybrid phals and if not maybe I can sell them on ebay or something. I actually like phal leaves! When they lean to the side and cascade down. Especially species like violacea that have those shiny, wavy leaves. I have a mini phal that leans over very far and I often admire the leaves. And I like that I don't have to worry about dividing them.

I have two big ones and they've only bloomed once in the 3 years I've had them (it's too hot in Singapore and day and night temp differences are not big enough to induce blooming). They're big with lots of green healthy leaves and they're going to get tossed soon. I think I'm like you in that I prefer compact orchids. I suppose it takes a while to figure out what your loves and preferences are.

They love humidity, do you have humidity trays? Do you fertilize once a month? Have you re potted them every 10 months? Do you have them in a very bright non direct light? Don't give up on them, if you do I'll take them from you....😃😃😃😃
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 9 жыл бұрын
well maybe you could gift them to someone that would be happy to have them, that's what I did, I didn't throw them they were pretty still lol yes it can be quite tricky to induce blooming if the temps are always warm, your only solution could be a separate room where you could control the temperature, give about 18 degs celcius at night time for about 3 - 4 weeks, that usually does it.

You just get to know another orchids and getting more into species. Its normal for us who grow orchids long enough to love species much more than hybrids.. I am bored of phal too but when they bloom, they are just making me fall in love again. Well, phal is the first love for all of us in the beginning, right.. Hahaha.. I am buying more hybrids, so my garden dont look like i am planting vegetables 😄 most of them are cattleyas hybrid now. I mount my phal on the tree at my neighbourhood and only left with 3 phals at garden rite now.

Hi Danny, As you know, I'm a huge Phal fan :) Today, however, an Aunty gave me a cymbidium orchid (my first non-Phal orchid) which I plan to grow outdoors. But I have a question about growing orchids outdoors. You know how you said to avoid trapping water between the growths of a sympodial orchid? What are you supposed to do in the case of outdoor orchids since it rains outside? Will the rain cause trapped water? Are you supposed to keep the orchid out of the rain, or can it tolerate rain showers? If you could make a video on this topic, I would be most grateful :) Thanks
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 9 жыл бұрын
***** Hi Ritvik, well the outside world is different, in the sense that it is always breezy and windy. Ofcourse if you have multiple days or long periods of rain it's good to shelter the orchid, but for the main part it can withstand the rain ofcorse :)

Danni me too after getting to know other orchids I don't truly like phals no more but I think mini phals and I am telling you mini Ive seen them at Home Depot and they are not more than 2-4 inches acros in each side of the plant so about 4-6 inches across they are really tiny and space saving I don't know if you can find them that small but you could hang some really up high in the balcony and because they are so hybridezed they can put a huge bloom count in the colors that you would find a large phal in. And they are space saving I will just intend to buy mini phals no large ones expect the 2 I have.

I have a silly question! I bought an 'Just Add Ice' orchid for my sister-in-law last Easter at the grocery store I work in, and I am not sure what type of orchid it is. I went to a garden center before I repotted it, and asked them what type it is, and she stated that that was just a brand name. Is there a way that I can determine what type it is and therefore repot it? It was blooming at the time, so she suggested that I wait until after it blooms.

Patti Owens I can also say that the foliage is not as full as the Phal you have, but is identical. I have NEVER had a green thumb, but have recently gained confidence when an old friend gave me a baby African violet that he started from a leave. I have since realized that they love the light they get where I placed them, and bloom quite beautifully !! BTW, my sister-in-law forgot to take the orchid so I ended up keeping it and it actually rebloomed for me !!

Patti Owens Hi Patti, well from what I know Just add Ice only sells Phalaenopsis orchids, so most probably this is what you have. Each orchid can have slightly different leaves and colors, but the growth pattern is the same. I suggest you don't water with ice though, that is just a marketing logo. Here is a video on how to care for Phalaenopsis orchids, you will see different varieties there, but they are all Phalaenopsis :) hope this helps kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5TIXqGba7OsgpI

Apparently I am actually the opposite of you whenever it comes to phalaenopsis. I love their foliage and I actually find some other Orchid's foliage to look rather strange to me.

imagine those phal species, with even tinier flowers and humungous leaves!!O.M.G.So not proportionate.I only have one though its a Violacea Corulea.Its leaves isnt too big thats why I brought it :) I dont like floppy huge leaves either.I just prefer Onci family leaves.They look erect and elegant.But thats just me.

Have you seen those tiny phals ?? The flowers are like 1 inch by 1 inch.Pretty cute.Many colours selling for like 10 bucks.The leaves are small too.Wanted to buy it but I rather settle for fragrant orchids :)

Am contactat Growin si i-am intrebat in email daca sacul cu muschi are peat sau sphagnum. De circa o saptamana si ceva nici nu s-au sinichisit sa imi raspunda.
