Hi Vee!! A tip on the transcripts…you can actually just get the official sealed transcripts in hand, don’t open or tamper with it, seal it up nicely in an envelope, and have it delivered to your LA school by DHL or any other international courier service. I’ve had to do that many times for schools in the US and it works out fine 😊

I think turning the extra room into a study or a guest room would be brilliant. For the study, I personally really recommend separating your bedroom and the place that you study, so that when you enter your bedroom you know it's time to relax, when you enter study you know it's time to do coursework, read and research. Separating the different atmospheres work well for me and it also reminds me to keep a work-life balance (which is really important cuz PhD stress is no joke) If that's not your thing, a guest room would be awesome so it gives you a little bit more flexibility if any of your friends are coming over, they don't even need to book a hotel if they are coming all the way from the UK. High cost furniture is also not needed cuz stuff like sofa bed fits really well with guest rooms and it has a 2 in 1 purpose so when nobody is over just turn the bed into a pull out couch where you can enjoy a cup of tea

Vee, I would not worry about the transcripts very much. I am sure that both Oxford and Harvard University will find some way to send to you, so that you can send them to your new university. Make sure that your transcripts are sealed properly in the envelopes.

On furniture, I would just buy an affordable bed, desk and chair then source everything else on FB marketplace and other secondhand sites/places once you get there. People in your building who are moving out/on may also have furniture to sell/give. I'd also seriously consider the studio or getting a room mate. It's pretty normal for people to have room mates globally, including the UK, def not just a US thing. I'm sure you'd be able to find someone via the uni (maybe speak to the uni housing advice or student advice team), and let anyone you know/meet/people in your department know. It's really not worth struggling financially whilst doing a phd, it's hard enough! All the best.

I don't know if you have tried using the online website Parchment yet. But, I used this website when ordering my transcripts when I applied for college in 2019. I don't know if they still offer this, but in 2019 they had the ability to mail sealed paper copies of my transcript to an address.

When moving abroad, having a roommate can be nice because you always “have a friend” in a way. I moved to Canada at 18 ans always lived with roommates up until now (I’m 24). But at the same time, grad studies can be tough and having your own place can help with being organized in your own space and things!

I needed this. I, too, will be moving to the US from Guyana in a few months to start my Masters. Although I'm going on a full-ride scholarship, it's hectic finding apartments and ensuring that you’re on top of everything. Vee most unis nowadays have online tools you can use to request your transcripts and they just send them straight to the universities. I wonder why this has been so hard. Ask them to seal them and take them with you, but Harvard should be able to send them straight to the uni. Login to MyDCE to request Harvard transcript
