My big problem with these "Garfield" movies is the fact that the Garfield in these movies is absolutely NOT the Garfield of the comics. If you read the comics, Garfield was a lump. He was lazy, and pretty much immobile, and sarcastic and had a very dim view of life. You watch these movies, and he's dancing, bouncing all over the place, etc.. he moves around like he's on crack mixed with gallons of coffee. This isn't Garfield. Even the old TV cartoons did the character better and more accurate than ANY of these movies. I guess they just assumed that for a kids movie, the characters have to be bouncing all over the place and moving non-stop, like a damn Tom & Jerry cartoon. Garfield isn't Tom and Jerry. He was a lazy, fat, lump who preferred just being in his cat box, covered with a blanket that he peeked out of to anything else. I think that the people who made these Garfield movies, and later shows, never read the comics. At all.

Part of the problem I think is it's clear even if there'd been decent dialogue to work off of I feel like Bill Murray checked out the minute he realized what he was working with or for I guess in this case. I can't imagine what absurd amount of money they had to give him to do the voice work for the sequel. But yes Lorenzo Music aside, the '80s/90's cartoon was damn near perfection, it wasn't the most perfect it could have been but I think considering what they wanted to do it was a happy medium and at the very least Garfield was fairly on point during the show. Everything Garfield based from the last I'd say 20 years or more is pretty much pure garbage. The movies and cartoons especially were such a joke. Worse versions of the original cartoon and comic strip.

And he was an actual voice actor, playing Cyborg in the last season of Super Friends. Yet Maurice LaMarche got away with doing a Ramis impression, even though the producers didn't want it. But Lorenzo, sounding like Lorenzo was a deviously brilliant choice. Some voice actors you hire because they have that one voice that's somehow distinct, yet versatile without major alterations. On a technicality, Peter's voice is a little higher in pitch and a lot more energetic, but it's unmistakably Garfield. While Dave sounds closer to Bill, Lorenzo's take was closer in spirit to the sardonic, always feeling above everything for this Peter. My cat is a beautiful light orange tabby, and I remember seeing a picture of her on the website for the shelter and was surprised that she had been there for months. It turns out that she was pretty anti-social and would throw a fit when the workers tried to pick her up, but I hung out with her a few times (where she wasn't super attentive towards me) and adopted her. The night I got her home, just after she was spayed, she cuddled up next to me in bed. She's still shy and a bit skittish, but her biggest attitude problems were just because she found the shelter too loud and stressful.

I think Quinton Reviews pointed out that the biggest flaw in the Garfield movies is that they saw him as more of a mascot character for advertising & never REALLY paid any attention to ANY of the characters personalities OR how they bounced off of each other in terms of character dynamics. He also pointed out that the Bill Murray Garfield movies have a LOT in common with films that had CGI characters/mascots like the live-action Scooby Doo films, the live-action Chipmunks films, live-action Smurfs films, & the standalone film "Hop." (Check out his "Garfield Movies Are... Weird" video if you want to hear his take on them as well as the animated Garfield films.) Personally, I also feel that the live-action Cats & Dogs has some similarities to the live-action Garfield movies because they illustrate how having CGI animals "interacting" with REAL animals JUST DOESN'T WORK. If anything it just draws MORE attention to the uncanny valley impressions you get from watching the CGI characters! Real animals also CAN'T display the wide range of emotions unlike their animated counterparts so it just adds to the weirdness. Hollywood's misguided ideas on "realistic" CGI also do it no favors. I feel that the ONLY films that have just BARELY avoided these pitfalls are both the Detective Pikachu movie (because Nintendo's intervention kept the film makers from going all in on "realism") & the Sonic film (because of pushback from fans when they saw his HORRIFIC initial look). On a different note, I found out today that "Garfield & Friends" is available to watch on both Tubi TV & Pluto TV at the time of this post so if you haven't seen the show you can check it out now. Both of the aforementioned services are of the "free with ads" variety of streaming services.

Real animals not being able to emote is a good point. I didn't see it, but aside from the obvious cash grab of celebrity voice actors that I wish wasn't so prominent, and I know the blame can go to the original version of the film for that, but the live-action Lion King movie suffered from that...sorta...still made a ton of money. It's better in an animated medium because the characters can express emotion while also showing it. Disney was going for a super hyper realistic portrayal, but the again, by that logic, since real lions do not act in the way that the Lion King portrayed (that whole monarchy thing), then they shouldn't have made the movie. lol

I knew this movie had it all dead wrong as soon as I saw Liz... just 100% off in every way. Jon being a (lovable) loser and never getting a date with her is a character thread that is impossible to miss no matter how infrequently you read the strip. Maybe if they got the other half right, it wouldn't have mattered; but nope. Garfield is lazy, mean and sarcastic by nature, so when he breaks his grumpy streak to hug Pooky or shows genuine concern or appreciation for his friends, it means something. Happy-go-lucky is not something you'd ever describe him as. IMO I would've preferred a take on His 9 Lives blown up to Fantasia levels of cinematic artistry; but yeah, I know that'd never happen.
@Tareltonlives3 жыл бұрын
Exactly, you CAN have a scene where Garfield is tender and loving and enthusiastic or where John stops trying too hard and genuinely wins Liz over with sincerity. Those happened in the strip and in the show once in a great while. But when those happen less than 20 minutes into the movie, it's a disaster. Like John adopting Odie (I wrote Eddie by mistake "SHAUUUUUUUUNIE! SOMEBODY ADOPT ME!") to impress Liz I can imagine: like this could have been an arc for both John and Garfield. John realizes that he's a pushover because he's got a heart, and that's what he needs to show Liz, and Garfield can do the Toy Story "I'm jealous but ultimately I need a friend" But they didn't go with that.

Honestly I thought it was a criminally underrated movie for many reasons. It actually captures the spirit of the cartoon. (Yes some of the jokes weren't the funniest in the movie but you have to admit neither was some of the humor in the cartoon.) The characters being CGI have a purpose in the story and we're photo-realistic and were cell-shaded, the human protagonist was actually a good character that you have _care-and sympathy_ for. The human actors in general were fun and were great, it was "mostly" timeless (minus a few cameos that date the film a bit), they had the voice actors from the cartoons to voice the characters in the film and not celebrities, the 4th wall jokes are even more meta than Muppets and Deadpool combined. And the overall message of keeping in touch with your childhood when you're an adult is something people these days sould easily relate to. I sure do.

The first Garfield special where they did the Garfield and Odie run off and go to the pound story is essentially the plot of Toy Story also, and so was this movie, they just did it wrong.
@JohnDoe-wq5eu3 жыл бұрын
It's amazing just how many things they got wrong and just how wrong they got them. Also it's one thing to make a movie that's bad but entertaining but it's truly the worst sin to make a boring painful movie. At least make it a fun trainwreck to watch if you're not going to even try.

I think the _biggest reason_ why the slapstick is either nonexistent or lacking here is the fact that this movie is _live-action._ This movie could get away with slapstick like Garfield kicking Odie off the couch or smacking him on the back of the head if this was an animated movie like _The SpongeBob Movie_ or _Hotel Transylvania_ (or even if Odie was a cartoony dog like how Garfield is a cartoony cat). When you try that with a _real dog_ or at least a semi-realistic dog, it _doesn’t look_ funny, it’s _unsettling and wrong._

2009-2013 was filled with old cartoon shows getting a live action movie, the Smurfs, marmaduke, Garfield, the Flintstones, and Alvin and the chipmunks. Heathcliff was gonna get a live action movie and it had a official trailer made but the movie got canceled for some reason i hope by 2023 heathcliff gets a reboot or a movie

The live action Flinstones movies are actually way older than that, but yeah, you're right.

Well the Flintstones movie apparently did over 30 different writers working on the films production, which would explain why the plot felt so disjointed. Still had a great cast though, except for Roise O’Donnell’s Betty she was extremely miscasted.

The recent CGI adaptations of popular comic and cartoon characters have all been really hit and miss. You have the occasional good ones like the Scooby Doo movies, then you have all the surprisingly well casted duds like Garfield. Really uneasy about how this new Super Mario movie with Chris Pratt is going to turn out.

The best review for this movie is just that clip of Phelan absolutely deadpan at the dancing. I think the filmmakers remembered the part in the specials where Garfield dances and just made that his personality when it didn't happen that often in the strip or the cartoon. Or maybe it was considered safe while his sarcasm and snark and violence was "too mean"

There's so many things wrong with the part where Jon puts Garfield outside at night: 1. Jon put his cat outside at night with no collar or anything to identify that he's an owned pet. That's just dangerous. What if he'd really run away and you never saw your cat again? You'd have no one to blame but yourself. You gotta be careful letting your cat out! 2. Garfield wouldn't be obedient enough to just sit outside and sulk. 3. There's a dog door that he can use to just get back inside anyway. 4. He DOES use the dog door to get back in immediately after Odie goes outside to sleep with him. Even though he was totally down to sleep outside before that. As if somehow Odie being inside the house prevents Garfield from just going back in. 5. Jon somehow didn't notice or care that Garfield was suddenly back in the house after being kicked out, even though he would know he never went to let him back in after putting him outside as punishment. It treats it as if that scene never even happened and everything is fine again. My point is, this movie is dumb and I hate that I watched it so many times as a kid. 😆
