It's always more horrifying when atrocities are committed by an apparently-sane person with a nice upbringing and a healthy social life (e.g. "The Good Son"). Why? Because it breaks all of society's "rules" about what makes a bad person do bad things. You can't anticipate what that kind of evil is capable of.

When someone asks if they liked the Halloween remake “IM NOT LISTENING AAAAHHHH!!!”
@Alucard-A-La-Carte5 жыл бұрын
The original Halloween was based on John Carpenter's experience growing up in the American south and witnessing horrific violence being done without any real motive other than hate. He wanted to channel that and create a killer that was simply fueled by blind hate, not for any one or any thing, just a pathological need to kill and he put the mask on him to, as Phelous points out, ensure that no one can relate to him on any level, a completely motionless, dead face... So yeah: poor kid who grew up in an abusive house!! Even though in the original, it's pretty clear the Meyers family are well-to-do and wouldn't that actually be a MORE interesting examination? This rich kid who has everything handed to him and no reason to lash out STILL has the darkness behind his eyes and the need to kill?
@SamsarasArt5 жыл бұрын
The original Dr Loomis was brilliant. His acting shows how damaged his character is and how desperate he is to stop Myers. You learn how awful he is just by the effects he left on Loomis.

12:22 this pretty much sums up why I have grown to dislike the KZbin copyright algorithm bullshite whatever. The use of original Halloween soundtrack just fit so perfectly for this "betrayal of Loomis' character" joke, and also this ending scene that's being referenced is my favorite part of the 4th movie. Now that the song has been replaced (for good reasons I know, your hands are tied...) not only has the joke lost its original dramatic flair, but the Donald Pleasence's scene becomes ridiculous (in the most negative way of speaking). Again, can't fault you, I blame the system... In other news, I just saw the new Halloween (which I thought was great) and what a perfect way to finish my day by watching Phelous tackle the ultimately very meh Rob Zombie re-imagining or whatnot. Seen this review (and its sequel) at least ten times and it's still gold, great job!

Hell even the short scene of Freddy as a kid wasn't poorly done, it was used to establish he was evil and cruel from the start (even if it's a little bit silly) but here we have to try to relate to Michael. Why I didn't mind the child Freddy scenes in Freddy's Dead is the idea was that Freddy was supposed to be the villain, we were not supposed to like him (as a good guy), he wasn't innocent. Michael in this was the victim

Positive Points: •While it isn't the cast's fault that they do bad, they were casted well. Tyler Mane is by far one of the most intimidating versions of Michael Myers, Malcolm McDowell would make a great Dr. Loomis IF DONE WELL, Brad Dourif is admittedly perfect as the Sheriff, Scout Taylor-Compton could've been a great Laurie Strode, plus Udo Kier, Richard Lynch, Sybil Danning, Danny Trejo, Clint Howard, Bill Moseley, Leslie Easterbrook, Dee Wallace and Ken Forre are in it. Half of them may or may not be d-bags in the movie, but having any of those stars in a movie is ALWAYS fun. •Again, Tyler Mane does an EXCELLENT Michael Myers. The Michael Myers-es before him are scary, but having Michael being built like a bulldozer makes his presence even MORE intimidating. Though then again, how DID his hair fit in there? •Michael's costume. Being very dirty and weathered just somehow belongs in a Halloween movie. Heck, the new Halloween reboot trilogy sure has that. •Like you said, Phelous, Laurie AT TIMES has a funny quirky side to her, andif they had built upon that, maybe we actually COULD care about her. Then there's everything else. VERY NEGATIVE!

To me the way i do see the Loomis and Michael in this take is like looking at Bruce wayne with Jason todd as much like in under the red hood and the comics Bruce thought Jason could be helped and even try to talk him into seeing reason almost like Loomis did with Michael and much like loomis we did see how Batman view Jason as his greatest failure and even admitting turning him into something far worse

I give Malcolm McDowell credit for at least trying to do a good job, but certainly not Donald Pleasance who was perfectly cast by John Carpenter in 1978. While its sad that Deborah kills herself and leaves little Angel/Laurie an orphan, but casting your spouse as a sexualized & clueless object defeats most of the sympathy. While Tyler Mane looks imposing and is savage in the role, Nick Castle’s eerie stalking Shape was more terrifying and the fact he subtly killed his victims until the sequels made it blander

Having actually watched this finally, I think this is better than at least the Elm Street remake if only by virtue of having a point beyond just "what if same movie but replace any subtlety wirh CGI." Sure, the point is counter to what the original creator wanted, but what he wanted went out the window in Halloween 2. And I, personally, can't help but notice a few things I actually really like. Namely 1: Michael had signs of being a psychopath before getting to the Opening Kill of the original and 2: *this* Michael never killed (a human) unless he was wearing a mask, which helps distance him from any humanity he may have had in this version. Ultimately, the characters are still unlikable assholes and the "motive" feels pretty shallow, at best, and this is still objectively a worse movie than the original, but it has more merit than SOME of the remakes of the same era this came out, and that makes it worth...idk...SOMETHING.

They had that mask thing going on but it didn't go anywhere either, sounds like a theme Wes Craven could have written better. Oh well this gave me an excuse to revisit.

Why do modern horror movies persist in making the characters we're supposed to care about into assholes? Do they not understand that the audience can't relate to assholes? Or do they think their audience is made up of assholes and therefore can only relate to assholes? Rob Zombie seems to want us to care more about Michael than Laurie. Why? Is it because Michael is male and Laurie is female, and he thinks his audience is going to be mostly teenage boys who won't be able to care about a girl because they only see girls as bitches and sluts, like all the female characters in this movie? Laurie acts like a slut, and even Michael's mother--the only sympathetic female character--is a stripper, and therefore looks like a slut. This movie's attitude toward women is worthy of Michael Bay.
