Funny enough, I think Hello I must Be Going might be my favorite album! I think I agree with you about the identity thing, but "Do You Know, Do You Care" and "I Don't Care Anymore" are two of my favorite songs of all time. I love the use of the Movement MCS II drum computer on that album, you can also hear it on the Genesis self-titled album. I once wrote Phil a letter and got a signed picture back! I was fortunate enough to see him in concert a few years ago, I think I saved a piece of Sussudio confetti lol. Also I think I may have stolen a menu from a restaurant after the show that said "Welcome Phil Collins Fans" haha. I have a reminder set for your gated reverb video, I love obsessing over gear and studio tricks! I especially love the way he used to use the AMS DMX 1580s on his vocals, with his favorite Beyerdynamic M88 mic.

A few years ago, out of nowhere, I just really clicked with that album. There are no big standout tracks (aside maybe Everyday, Can't Turn Back...), but as a whole cohesive package, it's fantastic!

Against all Odds was originally written for Face Value. Don’t Lose My Number was written during the Hello I Must Be Going sessions.
@gskunde1983 Жыл бұрын
17:07 By the way, "The Man With The Horn" was recorded during the Hello, I Must Be Going! sessions and not during the No Jacket Required sessions. You can recognize it on at least two points. Firstly, it has a rather organic arrangement and has lots of sonic similarities with "Like China" if you compare both. And secondly, his voice wasn't finished with the distortion effect which was almost permanently present during the whole No Jacket Required album including "I Like The Way" which was indeed a leftover from the No Jacket Required sessions.

Nice video you’ve put together there man! Seeing HIMBG in last place is just wrong imo. Just “leftovers” from the FV sessions but one must imagine how both albums could’ve ended up being if the tracks were distributed differently across both albums. Rather than being FV 2.0, it just continued what made FV so great imo. Just has everything one could possibly ask for Overall, I agree on some stuff and disagree on other stuff but you’ve done a great job ranking all these great albums and it’s no easy task doing so :)

My top 3 of Phil was: 1. ''...But Seriously'' 2. ''Both Sides'' 3. ''Face Value''. For me, ''...But Seriously'' and ''Both Sides'' was for me the maturity of Phil and how theses two albums was very deep and how he wanted to make serously has a artist. ''...But Seriously'' was the risk, because he extended his subjects in his songwriting, to including politicals songs like ''That's Just the Way It Is'', ''Another Day in Paradise'' and ''Heat on the Street'' and also including two very personals songs. ''All of My Life'' was his most introspective song of the album, talking about his dad, died in 1972 and was a RnB ballad who he put all his feelings about the lost and regrets to not have more connection with him during his life (because his relation with his dad was very difficult during the life and he didn't have the time to fixing his relationship with him when he died). ''Father to Son'' was also personal, written for his son Simon, who he made a message of love for his son. ''Both Sides'' was very dark musically and lyrically and he played all the instruments in this album alone. This was his most introspective, raw and personal album he ever made. While ''Face Value'' was more a anger album, ''Both Sides'' was more a introspection of his errors, his life and how he didn't have the time to analysed his life during his successfuls years. It's not a divorce album like in the two first albums ''Face Value'' and ''Hello I Must Be Going'' who he was anger and sad, like many said. His second mariage with her second wife also falling out during the period of this life. He written this album has a difficult time of his life: profesionnally and personally. This was for me a album that it's demand a watchful listen to appreciate this album, because it's was not so much commercial album and was very experimental. For me, his highest of his creativity and his last good album to date.

I love your channel! In my opinion, Phil's best music is R&B based with a groove that shows his ability as a drummer! The albums that included the Phoenix Horns were colorful and upbeat. I had the opportunity to see Phil perform when I was a teenager with Brand X. I also saw him on drums with Clapton in 87. The Big Band Tour and numerous occasions to his rehearsals. I had a friend who was in his band from the beginning in 1981 to The Serious Tour. Once Phil stopped playing as much his music became popish and lost a lot of the soul! Whenever he was drumming it was something special. I wasn't a big fan of his albums after Seriously. His music seemed a little sterile after that. His concerts after The Seriously Tour were more about him as a singer and very little as a drummer! His rehearsals were something to see! You saw the drummer, the vocalist, and the entertainer. In some cases, they were better than the actual show, because you saw improvising and spontaneous reactions. These are my top 5 Phil Collins Albums. Face Value is Number 1. But Seriously is 2. Hello, I Must Be Going 3. No Jacket Required is 4. Dance Into the Light is 5.

Awesome video! Just found you on YT this week... Great to have PC nerds here :) :) One slight difference to my list compared to yours, but all in all agreed: 1 But Seriously (to me it is almost a tie with No Jacket... This explains why I love the First Farewell tour live album the most) -- Funny because to me the Tarzan soundtrack has so much of the "Find a way to my heart" vibe that while watching the movie I thought I have heard it in the background.. haha 2 No Jacket 3 Face Value (To me for the exact same reasons you ranked it #4 is why I did rank it #3 LOL) 4 Both Sides 5 Dance Into the Light 6 Testify 7 Hello I must be going To me "Going Back" is more on the Hot Night in Paris vibe and to me as well does not align too well with the rest of his career's albums.

Funfact, you re-ignited my interest in Vinyl. I was really big into vinyl about 15 years ago when i was in my mid teens, i stopped because the digital streaming revolution happened and we all got carried away with the convenience of it all. After watching your in depth videos on the albums and just talking about listening for listenings sake, i understand that i need to sit down more and listen instead of using all my music as background music. And i remember how that felt from 15 years ago, thats how i discovered Genesis. So theres a new record player on the way.! :D Also, i get shook everytime i look at Collins old face on the reissues on Spotify and Apple Music so getting the old prints is my priority. He should not have placed those new photos on the front, maybe on the booklet or the back perhaps?, the originals are iconic for a reason. But anyways, keep doing what you are doing… I’m looking forward to vinyl hunting soon!

My personal ranking of PC's eight official studio albums: 8th: 'Going Back', aside from a few quite good tracks like "Heatwave", "Jimmy Mack", "Blame It On The Sun", "In My Lonely Room", "Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever" and "Papa Was A Rolling Stone", it sounds (unfortunately) like a chilly imitation attempt at some of his youth favorites, unfortunately not interpreted. Worst example "Uptight (Everything's Alright)" which sounds almost exactly like Stevie Wonder's original. Nevertheless, I've always preferred an active PC to an idle one, which was why I received the album benevolently and listened to it intensively for a some weeks or months. 7th: 'Testify', which has some tracks I really like "The Least You Can Do", "Wake Up Call" (great potential as song, but implementation wasn't that strong), "Don't Get Me Started" and "Can't Stop Loving You". I've already commented on my thoughts on this at the appropriate place. 6th: 'Dance Into The Light', I feel for the balance of brightly moody and smooth tracks put into an exotic vibe. But I would have preferred if PC hadn't put on sampled guitars, because firstly, it definitely didn't sound better than real guitars and secondly, he had some really great guys in his band (Stuermer and Caryl) who could have filled every need for a more string oriented album. 5th: 'Both Sides', shortly after it came out I wasn't really into it. But the older I've got, I've realized there are clear and sober moments when I need such record to underline the fact that love can break and finally die. This album helps a lot with that. 4th: 'Hello, I Must Be Going!', during my first years as a fan I didn't take notice of it that much similar to 'Both Sides'. That time I was primarily focused on the hits. But later on I started to appreciate the angry, sober/dark, but also the upbeat tracks. My least favorite of the album is indeed "You Can't Hurry Love", because it's rather a foreign matter on the album. My absolute favorite tracks from the album are "I Cannot Believe It's True" (ever noticed the smoothly elongated electric piano in the background?) and "It Don't Matter To Me", which in my opinion could have been a hit single and I was very pleased it enriched the 'Both Sides tour' set list in '94. 3rd: 'Face Value', similar to HIMBG, apart from "In The Air Tonight", I didn't care about the album as a whole during my first years as a fan. But when I learned to love yacht rock during the 2000s, I kind of re-discovered it, because it has on the one hand such a smooth sensibility for soulful and beachy ballads and on the other hand such mad pop/rhythm blends like "Hand In Hand", "I Missed Again" (I've got a crush on Ronnie Scott's sax solo

Thru These Walls was indeed a single, but you never (or nearly enough) heard it on the radio. You Can't Hurry Love was really his big, and only, hit from that album. Edit: Great video, BTW. Keep them coming. :) I guess you noticed that I said radio. Of course, when that and quite a few of Phil's albums were released, that was all we had to hear new music. I guess my point is that, while you have the complete body of his output to judge in one fell swoop, those of us who saw it year by may have a different view, due to the protracted amount of time it took to accumulate it as it happened. No offense intended to your approach. I look forward to hearing your reviews.

I love but seriously. For me it’s sentimental. I was 14 years old in richmond Virginia. I was babysitting and discovered this album after the kids went to sleep. I would sit there and be mesmerized by the drum sound on That’s just the way it is and another day in paradise. It made me want to play drums. But musically as well, it’s just so good. I feel the pain of regret in songs like All of my Life. One comment you may find interesting. I find the studio version of so you remember to be saccharine and devoid of feeling. I truly started to appreciate it after hearing it live in Dayton Ohio in 1997. You can feel the true pain in that version on that tour. Thankfully someone captured this version because I think it’s 10 times better than the album version: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmfOfKmfZtaIaKM Finally, you mentioned 808 and 909.
