I much refer Phil's Blues for Allah era Dead approach to Bob's we're the new Beach Boys doing nostalgia. I enjoyed this while I find some other later Dead stuff frankly disappointing. For me the Dead had two peak era's; Pig Pen's 1968 to 1972 acid Blues era and Jerry's 1975 to 1979 evolved jazz rock when they still had energy and attack. With e few exceptions they were never the same after Jerry's stroke in 1979. Only Phil continued to improve. Check out the exceptional 'Eyes of the World' with Wynton Marsalis. One of the few later GREAT jams Phil's bass playing is literally the best bass ever. Only maybe Bootsie Collins excepting. Bob is a great rhythm player but Phil is the Dead's backbone and a great musician. Jerry's Dark Star and jamming dueling partner!
