lightninboy1979 actually i will say Marc Ford is better, whereas Ford who has so much more soul , and will endeavor to do 1.5 bends on high E and B strings also Joe Walsh... Youl'll never hear Mayer do those things. I feel Mayer is a SRV clone, and a million guitarist who do this, there are a handful of licks. He's good, but in a world with a lot of good guitarist, not innovative like a Marc Ford w uber more soul and edge , or a Zappa, Howe, or a Jerry. Id also say that Ben Harper and Derek are more influential as far as blues guitarists. I think Mayer did a good job, iI quite enjoyed...he can do a variety of things, tasty but does not separate form the pack for me.

Okay, Phil's place, Terrapin Crossroads is a restaurant, in San Rafael CA with a SMALL ~ only 150 person capacity musical 'small-room~venue', which is one foot from the restaurant's parking lot. Right, so, then ~ JOHN MAYER, comes out and DOES THIS performance. ONCE IN A LIFETIME! This audience was INCREADABLE LUCKY!!!

george cole I have always said that John Mayer, for some reason, was hiding his true guitar-playing ability. My significant other informed me that it was probably because he could make more money doing what he was doing. I have to agree with her. I am just glad that it looks like he is finally going to show the world his true guitar-playing ability. If you search for some of his older stuff, you will soon realize that the guy is a guitar genius, but you already knew that :-)

1984hereweare "showing the world what he can do guitar-wise" makes great financial sense in the context of playing with Lesh, for both parties: The Dead want to sell to the legions of Mayer fans and Mayer wants to sell to the legions of Deadheads. Mayer - Lesh collaboration enables each camp to become aware of the other and (wait for it, wait for it) buy, buy, buy.

I fucking hate how people call any sort of collab or different take on projects a "cash grab." You really think these multi-millionaires give a shit about that? It's not like the Grateful Dead are out to sell platinum albums. Those guys already fill up shows in their respective gigs. They've been doing this for 50 years. They love the fucking music. John Mayer is putting off recording a new album to go on tour with Bob, Bill, and Mickey. If anything, yeah, the Dead want fans to listen to John's music, because it's fucking good. True deadheads listen to all sorts of shit, because they like good music. Shits not about money, it's about making good fucking music. MUSIC. Not MONEY. Don't think they went for a "cash grab" playing a few tunes at fucking Terrapin Crossroads after they just played a 2 hour show. If they were all about money, they'd pound out generic album after generic album and play the same shit on stage every night for 40 minutes. Do they do any of that? Do they even associate with people who do anything remotely similar? No. They don't. They play good fucking music with good fucking musicians. That's all this shit is. #RantOver

Every few years I feel like I'm watching Mayer for the first time. In a way that there's a semi-reinvention that makes him appear "exposed", vulnerable, or accessible - and then he just Butt-f#ck's it to complete mastery, taking whatever he was doing to a whole new level and yet still connecting to the original intimacy of the idea. He's gonna have one helluva Rock n Roll H.O.F induction ceremony at the Grammy's 30 years form now.

It's fantastic to see all the iterations of john Mayer and his dynamic talent! His playing was perfectly stated in this! Paying such wonderful homage to JG with his liberal and playful use of the chromatic scales! Clearly the guys were just having some fun with this performance but make no mistake, it matter NOT AT ALL what any of you naysayers think about john Mayer, everyone who is anyone in the music world(especially the world of guitar) has known, is getting to know, or is loving what he has to bring when he does things like this! Furthermore, if he were to do this in a studio with Phil and friends, the harmonies and tempo changes etc..will be as smooth and tasty As a sweet Georgia peach!!

+Adam Kelly perfectly stated and yes I am a guitarist also. All the comments can not push down the truth in the music that comes ringing clear when he plays with this band.I saw the dead more than 300 times and many Garcia band shows.I love and miss Jerry every day and will still go back and pull out my spring 90 soundboards anyday but I will also allow my mind to stay open to new incarnations of this band>anyone who would do otherwise will only miss out on hell of a good time...long live the dead

I tend to agree with their choice. The better part of the Dead was their risk-taking, in my opinion. They were sort of caught - John Kadlecik and Stu Allen can do that "exact Jerry clone" best, but that often leans towards the worst of the plodding, meandering, dying Dead. So they wanted somebody with a bit of originality, though from looking at the date of these shows and Lesh's obvious joy in NOT plodding along here, I'd bet they'd already invited Phil by then. Couldn't really UNdo it. For that matter, it was obvious Micky Hart was way, way out of practice, but what could they do, besides just turning his mikes off? Un-invite him, too? Nah, just hug and get it over with. Of course, I don't love all Dead unconditionally, listening to any Dead past the creeping heroinization of Garcia makes me angry, sad & creeped. I could quite happily die without ever hearing another Sugar Magnolia, but I have a iPod loaded with 13 "Dark Stars" from 1972 to 1974 (and a half dozen of the best Mahavishnu shows from 72 and 73). Listen to that stuff carefully for a bit and your brain will never quite fit back in the box it came out of. I'm among the many fans of the Phil band with Jimmy Herring and Warren Haynes, and now that they've got Bill Frisell and John Scofield on tap TOO, this might just be the chance of a lifetime for Mayer to go way deep and way wide, you know?

Very cool version of sugaree. Sure do miss Phil with the boys, would like to at least have oteil be an equal member up in the live sound mix like Phil always was, but would also be awesome to have him come to a couple shows this summer! Also Mayer is the man

Yummy, sweet, guitar pudding. I hope John really lets loose on the guitar on his next album. He needs to release a jam centered album. That would be epic.

Got a chance to visit Terrapin Crossroads this past fall while my wife was interviewing at a hospital. The place was awesome. A permanent hangout for 'Heads. We're moving to Nashville instead, but man I woulda loved to catch shows here regularly to catch some of that Dead magic. (~};}
