Hi Phil. When you first started turning this vase & the talk from Valerie was that she wanted the bark gone & you debated with yourself to 'leave or not to leave'. Howdy Phil Black walnut .... one of my favorites ....love that knot on the side . Couple of times I was going to make a large tool box out of Black Walnut for my machinist tools got so busy ....so I bought Kennedy ....I have 5 of them !... O always slowly apply finish on the walnut , so satisfying looking at it change ... Val can not hate the bark .... she does watch you .... Such a beautiful wood and so expensive . keep on turnin'

Pretty hard not to like this one Phil and I suspected Valerie would love it(just peaked and she does) and she is not alone . I love how you have the bark almost emerging from the wood. It does not look like it is on it but was in it. And I think you saw that when you mention that low spot and you just might have to keep it. Great vision there for sure. Hi Phil. Ha she did get it from some big name wood turner!!! I love the shape of the rim it really sets off the top of vase, and yes it has to have the bark. The turning police would have been at your door if you turned it all away. I’m sure Valerie will love it. Be well stay strong and see you in the next video.

You are correct, I do love it! I am not anti-bark, I just like it in smaller doses than Phil. I think he got just the right balance of bark and exposed figured walnut on this one. Does not get much better in my opinion!

I'm always a fan on leaving a hunk of bark on the work. This piece came out stunningly beautiful!!!!! Another Great work Phil!!!!! I am heading for a Neurologist Appointment. I may be getting early signs of old timers and need to get checked out. When watching an old movie, I cannot tell the difference between Lee Marven and James Coburn any longer. I'll be 71 in 4 days, so I guess it's time for a good tune-up.

Phil; I have been viewing your videos for several years now and love your work and sense of humor. I have incorporated many of your tips into my turnings. I ventured off into epoxy with the help of Jim Sprague from Canada and have made numerous turnings using epoxy until now where it has gotten so expensive to use. I guess I will just have to wait until hopefully the price goes down. I just completed an air handling system for my two lathes and floor vac. I started with a Harbor Freight system and modified it a bunch with the help of many U Tubers. I vented it outside to get rid of the real fine stuff which is way worse for you. It does an excellent job on the inside boring and sanding but not the best on the big chunks. I am now venturing off into using a Sorby texturing and spiraling tool and think this will add a little more pizzaz to my turnings. I am like you and don't care much if I sell any. I used Etsy for about a year and found they are a real pain so I quit them and now only sell by word of mouth. I just gave away about 30 turnings to family, friends and neighbors and feel the giving is as nice as doing the turnings. I will occasionally sell some items to help pay for all the shop supplies but it isn't necessary. I think turners like you and the many others out there really help our community by sharing your experience and wisdom. Yours in turning, Doyle Pugmire, Boise, Idaho.

Really enjoy your channel. I live about 30 miles south of Olympia, WA so we're kind of in the same neck of the woods. Been turning about 40 years but readily admit that I'm still learning and enjoying the craft. I do sell my bowls at craft shows but also expand my turning to creating unique turned birdhouses as well. Like you, I really enjoy natural features and try to leave bark and other features on the finished pieces as much as possible.

That came out beautiful! I can relate to not selling your work. I give much of mine to friends and family but then I am not as prolific as you. When you failed to mention what exactly it is you do with all those turnings, in my head I imagined a Discovery Channel crew showing up at your house to film an episode of Hoarders and finding entire rooms filled with finished bowls, vases, platters, and twig pots. During the interview you'd tell them "Many trees were milled to make the house and now the trees are slowly reclaiming it. In another few years the house will be solid wood again."
