Journey had a rehearsal space in an Oakland warehouse. They worked tirelessly to perfect their craft. They were cognizant of the fact that they should not release recordings that they couldn't duplicate live. They withstood the temptation to do crazy magic in the studio and instead relied on rehearsals and talent. Incredible talent 🙂

Regarding Steve and Neal, while I fully support Steve needing to walk away, it must have been very hard for Neal to lose his 'partner in crime' onstage. Of course after you factor in the friendship loss. Most of the time Steve walks over to Neal he has this conspiratorial smirk and Neal always has a big smile. Otherwise Steve is usually pulling Neal into the center stage or drawing everyones attention to him. Almost every time Neal looks over at Steve he had this huge grin even when Steve was not looking. They did seem to have a bond and it also seemed like Steve was always trying to get Neal to interact more. Randy Jackson seemed to do the same. I do not know much about Neal beyond his guitar and songwriting skills, perhaps he is a bit shy and that is why he seems to stay in one place unless Steve pulls him out of it.

Randy Jackson on Bass would later be one of the regular judges on American Idol. By this time Steve took over creative control of Journey. He wanted to do a more R&B style record. The drummer Steve Smith who is more of a Jazz player and Roll Vallory the bassist were not cutting it. So they hired session players Jackson and drummer Mike Baird to play on this album and tour. They ended up bringing Smith and Vallory back for the 1996 album Trial By Fire. Thanks and God Bless.

Phillip, back in the 60’s and 70’s, when these guys were learning their craft, every dance, every club, every event had live music in the Bay Area. I was in high school and we had a dance or event every weekend. So every school, every youth center, every club had a live band playing, and if the band stunk live, they didn’t go very far very quickly. We went expecting perfection and we got it. And we still love it!!❤

FTLOSM was actually his 3rd solo album. Against the Wall was his second, but Sony wouldn't release it. They said they didn't think it would be accepted. Steve thought otherwise, so he tried to do it through the courts without success. Steve later took the songs and put them on other albums.

I have always loved this song, and it seems like too few people react to it. I'm glad you did. :) This song has an r&b feel to it. One of Steve Perry's primary vocal inspirations was Sam Cooke. If you listen to Sam Cooke and the listen to Steve Perry, you can definitely hear the influence. Steve loved r&b vocalists and bought that to the rock element of Journey.

Neal Schon had to convince Perry to come back to Journey. Steve’s solo album Street Talk sold 2 million copies in the United States. Steve agreed, but he wanted bassist Ross Valory and drummer Steve Smith replaced. Neal didn’t hesitate to replace them. It had been 3 years since Journey had put out a new album. Frontiers had came out in 1983 and was a huge success. Separate Ways, Faithfully, After The Fall and Send Her My Love were all big hits. Raised On Radio was a little bit of a disappointment in sales compared to Frontiers. 1981’s Escape has sold 10 million copies in the United States which is certified Diamond. Frontiers sold 6 million copies and Raised On Radio sold 2 million copies. Steve left the business for awhile after the Raised On Radio Tour ended. Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain were basically on their own after Perry quit. Fortunately they formed Bad English with John Waite who was the lead singer of The Baby’s in the 70’s and a successful solo artist in the 80’s. Jonathan Cain played in The Baby’s before joining Journey. Their drummer was current Journey drummer Deen Castronovo. Their self titled album was released in 1989 and did sell a little over a million albums which is Platinum. Their song “When I See You Smile” spent 2 weeks at number one on Billboard Charts. It spent 6 weeks in the Top 10, 8 weeks in Top 20 and 15 weeks in the Top 40. Journey never had a number hit. That was something for Neal and Jonathan to be proud of.

After Steve's solo release, he really wanted to continue with his soul and R & B roots and some changes within the band for the sound he wanted to capture were made. Two being Michael Beard and Randy Jackson. Steve loves this feel and just recently paid tribute to Lamont Dozier in his passing as part of the amazing, legendary R&B writing team of Holland, Dozier and Dozier. Steve got to work with and record a song on his second solo record, Love for Strange Medicine but this is where his heart lies in the music of his childhood and R &B.

Incomparable voice at every age and stage of his career. So much energy in all the live performances. If you'd like some deeper cuts from Journey and Steve Perry's solo work: Patiently (he did crazyyyy stuff vocally live with Patiently in 78/79) from the Infinity album, People and Places from the Departure album, Too Late from the Evolution album, Hopelessly in Love from the Captured album, Still They Ride from the Escape album, Only the Young from the Frontiers album, Happy to Give from the Raised on Radio album, Easy to Fall from the Trial by Fire album, Somewhere There's Hope and also One More Time from Perry's For the Love of Strange Medicine album, Strung Out from Perry's Street Talk album, Against the Wall from Perry's compilation Greatest Hits + 5, and Sun Shines Gray from Perry's Traces album .... the alternative/sketches version is very cool. 🎵🎸🔥
