"her family was well off and didn’t really have much hardship until her parents were imprisoned" This is how I understood it as well. These criticism seem to lump her entire childhood into a single point in time. Is that a contradiction? Her family was doing well, then were left to fend for themselves. That's being portrayed as a lie, but that's pretty much how I understood the trajectory of her childhood. If she was so well off, why did she defect? The alleged truth is that she as doing great AFTER her uncle had been imprisoned DURING a famine that killed 3,000,000 people? All these gotchas to her story don't even line up with the history of North Korea at the time. The only people doing OK were very high level government positions, and no one is making the claim that she lied about her uncle or explaining whey she defected if she really was lying.

Yeonmi Parks story sounded heartbreaking the first hour I heard her talking, then pretty quickly it became obvious she overexaggerates and lies a lot. She has pretty much survived 300 years of torture according to herself. She talks about all these things like only eating 1 grain of rice for 10 years, then eating rats for 10 years and then dirt for 10 years before coming to America, but she was 20 years old.

I watched an hour and a half KZbin video that ripped apart her discrepancies and just lies. I used to watch her videos because information about North Korea is so scarce but quickly just by her editing and videos you could tell she exaggerated and catered to the general white republican man. It’s so depressing when people spread misinformation because we have to undo it all and present actual information and fact.

“I was beat by 3 black women” “I was beat by a man and woman” No reason her story should change so much. First there’s two people from two sexes. Then there’s three people from one sex. I’ve been a victim of crime, but even if I don’t remember the number of guys who’ve jumped me, I wouldn’t pretend like I know the exact number or sex of the perpetrators, especially if I’m being interviewed on it. Then the lie about not prosecuting is just a blatant lie. It’s sad, because Rogan just spread those lies and never verified or tried to verify the claims. This is part of the reason i don’t listen to podcasters who have random guests, and no real standard to fact check the things their guests say, which does impact the views and opinions of listeners.

I read Park's first book (In Order to Live) in 2021 for my Human Rights class and hearing all the rhetoric she has been pushing leaves me awe. It is completely opposite to what she explored in her memoir, especially from the political sense. Unless I am misremembering the contents of her book: Park stayed away from exploring political ideology/theory in North Korea and how it may overlap with that of the Western World. Listening and reading what Park has described in the last few years leaves me with mental puzzle as to what type of person Park is. On one hand the experiences Yunmi Park described in her first book (such as the anxiety and fear she lived with for most of her childhood due to starvation and worry over her family being imprisoned) left me with a mountain of respect for her. But with all the red flags that have risen in the last 3-4 years I am lead to believe she is two-faced, pathological liar.

You start your statement with "she's lying" then you confirm her horrible accounts with your NK-students? The shit she's seen and remember is far worse than you'd think, and the mother might be killed if she says anything negative about NK. I'm 100% sure this is a payed ploy by North Korea to discredit her and call her accounts for "western propaganda" because she's more popularly known than the other survivors. Also, there are video footage of people making bread out of roadside grass and weeds, and there are other survivors whom claimed the same shit long before Yeonmi escaped in 2009.

If I'm missing context, would someone please put it below? If not, please read on: For their privacy, I won't reveal the gender/sex of either student, but, even then, this wouldn't matter, and I don't know why anyone but them would need to know this information anyway. These are their lives and they know who they are and how they feel about themselves. We have no right to dictate another person's life just because it's different from how we live ours. I find it incredibly strange how people are so defensive about transgender issues when it literally has no affect on you as a person whatsoever. It's the same argument I give with those who have issues with the LGBTQIA+ community and a quote I came up with when discussing this at one time: "It ain't your body; it ain't your bedroom; it ain't your business." To me, too many people have too little going on in their own lives that they have to stick their noses into the lives of people they don't even know who are just trying to live their lives in the truest way they can. Even if you did know the person, I still refer to the quote above. I must say, though, what a miserable way to live- going around and telling people what they should be according to you, when you yourself will never be the perfection you have in your own mind. It all boils down to insecurity in one's self, otherwise, people would know it won't affect them and just let others be. The sad truth is that path where your insecurity dictates every part of your life and you are forcing what you believe are fixes for your own insecurities on others leads to fear, isolation, paranoia, and can go as far as to suicide when you've backed yourself into a corner with it far enough. Hate doesn't just hurt the one being hated, and those who hate can't seem to understand this. Hate is a choice. Why choose it when there are so many more negatives as opposed to choosing love? I truly hope you look for help. Look for peace. Let others live as they know is best for them and focus on you- in doing so, you may find that there are some wonderful trans people out there with tons in common with you that just want to be your friend and nothing more.

She is a grifter. But a lot of the defectors do go right wing. She's hardly the only one to say she sees parallels of the DPRK and radical left wing ideologies labeled as progressivism. I'm liberal, but it's not surprising that the big government left would be seen as somewhat parallel to the DPRK at least in its beginnings. There has been a lot of authoritiarianism, banning people and condemning people who have views that don't align with the left, forcing procedures(I'm pro vaccine but never agreed that it should be mandatory), outlawing jokes that are deemed offensive, etc. I mean, the left even set up a "ministry of truth". I mean that shit is straight out of 1984. So yeah, I'm a liberal who hasn't been too happy with a lot of the authoritarian stances the left has taken in recent years. I don't even care what she said I am just one throwing your logic back at you, that people vibe with her comment there for it has merit (a fallacy yes the same one you used, just adding this so you fully understand). And telling you, you suck at debate. Work on your rhetoric before you write an argument. You made positive claims, "left needs constant attention," but you gave no evidence. Even if you claim this single comment as evidence. in a country of 334,240,000 people, with a total voter turn out of 62.8% of all people who can vote in the last election for a turn out of 168,420,000/252,230,000. To follow that up, 51.3% of those voters voted left, so you have around 81,000,000 votes for the left. You have identified 1 person of the 81,000,000 who voted of the left last election for the left as, "needing attention." With evidence of 1/81,000,000 minimum all the way to 1/129,393,990 if we extrapolate our data to the entire population that can vote. Then you have not shown that your statement is true. If you wish to look into trends and how data on trends works I would point you to youtube. This comment would be the size of a small book if I wrote out all of the data proving why 1/81,000,000 is not a trend. That being said, I also narrowed my eyes at her very early on, and my gut instinct quietly said, 'something's not right with this woman.' I still don't know what to make of her and would be furious to learn of how much emotional connection and intellectual investment on my part was absolutely worthless due to her being a fraud to some degree. What a waste of time and furthermore, she'd be the one responsible for putting entirely false information into my noggin whilst portraying herself as someone-- and indeed someTHING-- that she's not. I spent some time watching a number of her videos because I like listening to other survivors. Being a survivor of human trafficking and having been homeless on and off throughout my youth to escape my abusers, I noticed occasionally Yeonmi would drop little sentences here or there that felt borderline shameful. One was something along the lines of "I come here and there are all these homeless here who seem so sad but you have it so EASY." Meanwhile so many of my loved ones, some of the kindest and strongest people in the world, have died from the elements, or at the hands of abusers, or su*cide. She also seriously confuses socialism with dictatorship a lot. Whether you like the idea of socialism or not, I could call myself a doctor but that doesn't make it true. It just felt as I watched that she really didn't have much compassion for the survivors and struggles that are in countries elsewhere. No matter what, you had it easy if you live in North America. It's insane how people don't realize that trying to be martyr for their situation where they DID have unfortunate situations...but then they exaggerate or lie for profit ruins the collective effort. Just like how the ONE time a black woman kidnapping makes national news, it's found to be a grand lie. Now, one of the most prominent North Korean defectors is found to be lying AND influencing right wing movements that she herself may not realize all the issues that come with it is also found lying. That all said, my sympathy can go out to some of these folks. Yes, they were trying to make a profit or cover up a situation or maybe try to bring to light unfortunate cases of discrimination, etc...but one thing that is often missed. It's VERY, VERY hard to realize when your one voice becomes the influential voice for hundreds or thousands. When a random person becomes national news all of a sudden (for example, I never heard of Park until today), that viral moment comes so quickly that it's tough for me to sit here and "yeah she shouldn't have done that". Because, I think it IS difficult to determine when ones comments become the comments of many.

She started going alt right/conservative REAL hard after she was featured on Joe’s podcast and as soon as she started using the term “woke” I stopped following her immediately. After she had another boom in popularity from his podcast her stories and political views started getting much more ridiculous which I suspected was to pander to his many conservative/alt right viewers who followed her after the show. Oh and I remember one time she posted a reel of her dancing on Instagram and it got taken down because of copyrighted music and she claimed China was trying to “censor” her 🤦‍♀️

It sucks that Yeonmi's a grifter because as a Korean-American, I feel like the horrific shit happening in North Korea doesn't get enough attention at all. She's probably the most high profile defector atm and she could have used that position to help other defectors and organizations like LINK, who help people in North Korea escape. If you're reading this comment, please take some time to watch some videos from defectors who aren't Yeonmi. Just because she lied about certain parts of her story doesn't mean that North Korea isn't putting people in political camps, that North Korea is actually a communist utopia (yes, people actually say that), and that real North Korean defectors don't struggle both to escape and to assimilate into a completely different country.

@@Baelor-Breakspear Do you know what journalistic integrity means man? It means presenting stories, for journalism, in a way that's unbiased, and truthful to their findings. A good example would be a journalist who gets assigned a story, goes out to where their story is, writes down simply what they see, and then reports on those findings honestly, someone without an agenda, whose only goal is to get the truth about a story and then give the people that truth, THAT'S real journalistic integrity. Idk if you've noticed, but unfortunately almost NO news organization in America fits that description anymore, including NPR. They're obviously biased towards one political side and it's extremely thinly-veiled. Promoting progressive causes 24/7 is not real journalism and I'm saying that as someone who isn't even on the right.

No bias towards the truth is a good thing and don’t hate on news agencies because the truth leans left. Facts generally have a left wing bias.
