Mr. X, I do not currently play jazz for I am studying concert and orchestral percussion right now, but I come back to your videos constantly because every lesson of yours I've seen leaves me so motivated to be a musician. In both how you take the time to break each aspect of a lick down and how you always show that you love what you do. Those things make these videos inspiring to practice. When I get back into drum set, these are lessons I would turn to in a heartbeat. Thank you for doing what you do.

Brother John X,, if this fill is from Philly on Miles' Milestones album, there was NO HI TOM, just Hats, a Ride a Snare a Kick & a Floor Tom my man !!

Thanks Adam. To be honest, I can't remember where I picked up this lick. It may have been from one of the first Bill Evans' albums that Philly Joe played on. All the best, John X

Thanks for this video training-- Pilly Joe Jones is one of my all time favourites. I would recommend anyone to listen to the Miles Davis "Porgy & Bess" record and the track called "GONE" which features Pilly Joe playing the most tasteful fills that just make you wish you were sat next to him.

Does he use this lick in the beginning of Locomotion off of Blue Trane?
@JohnXDrumLessons10 жыл бұрын
It's not the exact lick. However, Philly Joe uses the offset swung 8th between his hands and bass drum on the intro and during his solo. This is one of his trademark fill/solo patterns.
@Panwhacker0110 жыл бұрын
Hi John, aren't the 1/8th's you are playing straight ? as I can't seem to hear any swing feel.
@JohnXDrumLessons10 жыл бұрын
Actually they are straight 8th notes. But because the they are offset on the beat when you listen to each limb they are swung. That's what makes this luck so hip.

+JohnX Drum Lessons I do not understand this, care to elaborate? Also, what is the point of doing it with one hand double strokes, instead of just two hands?
@JohnXDrumLessons9 жыл бұрын
+Jens Emil Jensen Either sticking will work. I like the feel of this sticking and find it much easier to move around the set at this tempo
