In this video we will be talking about The 10 ways to manage time from the writings of Seneca. Seneca was a Roman statesman and a stoic philosopher, who in his moral essay, On the Shortness of Life, offers us time management tips.
So here are 10 time management tips from Seneca.
01. Treat time as a commodity
02. Don’t invest your time preparing for life
03. Live life for your own self
04. Practice Premeditatio Malorum
05. Make long term rewards immediate
06. Make the most of your free time
07. Spend time reflecting on your past
08. Stop wasting time in life’s trivialities
09. Invest your time creating new memories
10. Invest your time in philosophies
Hope you enjoyed this video and find these insights on time management helpful.
Seneca was a stoic philosopher and rhetorician. He’s one of the first stoics for which there are considerable literary remains for us to study. In his moral essay, On The Shortness Of Life, Seneca gives us an urgent reminder on the non-renewability of our most important resource: our time.
Stoicism is a school of Hellenistic philosophy founded by Zeno of Citium in Athens in the early 3rd century BC. Even though it is over 2000 years old, more and more people are discovering how Stoicism is not only relevant to modern times, but can be applied in very simple, yet strong ways.

true story. my stepfather retired in october after working thirty years saving up for retirement. He often worked overtime, sixty plus hour weeks saving up. In january, he was diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer. He died on April 6th, four months later. His only memories were not of time spent with his family but time spent at work. My father didn't even make it to retirement... He spent his life working ever since he was a kid, and he took upon himself the obligation to have a lot of his family members depend on him like his brothers, cousins etc... At 56 he was diagnosed with 4 stage cancer and at first he wanted to postpone the surgery because of work. The only time he spent at home with us is the time he was sick... he passed 6 months ago. 💔

This also goes along with my theory of why time seems to fly by from your 20's onward. As kids, we go to school and every hour we're in a new class learning new things and having all sorts of new experiences. In your 20's, it begins the rut to where your days aren't much different from the day before. Sure different things come up at work but you're applying the same skills, going to the same place, seeing the same people and next thing you know one decade of your life is as distinguishable as when you were 16 vs 15 years old. Crazy.
@ryang.7765
@ryang.7765 3 жыл бұрын
This is correct. Routine is what gives us the illusion of time passing fast for the same reason you sometimes “zone out” while driving on the same road you take everyday. You’re on autopilot. When you make new experiences for yourself, you are forced to be present. You can’t be on autopilot.

I always get mix feeling when I watch or read things that talks about "efficient living". Obviously, I watch these kind of videos to improve the way i spend my time. But, it really confuses me when it says "don't work endless hours only to be happy after retirement", and then says "don't waste your time talking and having a drink with your coworker. Spend that time working on what you really want to do". I feel like being chocked by expectations and endless goals. I work in a job that people says "so good you work with what you love". I got this job because I did exactly what this video says (spend every spare minutes studying and preparing to get this job I wanted). But may I say, Job is a Job. It still eat my life up. I much rather spend my free time drinking with coworker to get to know them as a person. Cuz I think I'd remember time spend with people whom I met than my 'success' on my death bed. Thank you! A lot ‘philosophers’ like to throw out contradictions on what we “should” do because of what we’ve been accustomed to thinking is valuable. “Do something that will enrich your life, like reading or perusing art galleries(basically types of media), but not video games or movies! That shit’s a waste of time.” The only person who decides what’s valuable to you is you. What bring you the most enjoyment or happiness? @@viktorianas Yeah, I definitely agree. We need water and it is extremely important. However, too much and you will drown and too little you will die of dehydration. I think literally almost everything has a place of balance in the world depending on its impact. My theory on something like drugs goes like this: If you could properly balance drug use for enjoyment, they'd be fine. The problem is drugs are very easily abused and used to the extreme. If you find you cannot balance drug use (which most people cannot), then you should pick the better of the two extremes and refrain from drug use altogether.

Some good advice here, but lacking emphasis on a huge important point. For anybody listening, there's nothing more important than spending time with your loved ones and filling your life with lots of charity, friends and love. You could read a thousand books, have the best skills, be the fittest person and spend your time "wisely" by being super focused, but it feels very sterile and frankly, kinda ego-stroking. If you spend your life truly caring for people, and them caring for you, that's time well spent. Even if it's just laughing at a funny joke, playing games and enjoying each other's company, or "wasting" time, if you spend it building relationships with people, it will never be a waste.

It's pretty obvious that everyone who makes more free-time and values it will do what they want, including spending time with loved ones or doing things that are meaningful...this isn't ego-stroking, it's inspirational. Are you sure you're not just projecting?
4 жыл бұрын
Now if only I could find people who actually care about more than themselves. I constantly adapt myself to the needs of others, but when I need something it just never happens. I always let people pass me first, if it happens the other way around it's 90% certain that it's accidental. I don't like to break rules. I used to when I thought a rule was stupid. I want everyone to get along. Yet... I meet apathy, anger and selfishness on a daily basis.
@barabaramoo
@barabaramoo 4 жыл бұрын
@@vikariongk113837 You could say I AM projecting. Sure, you can interpret it that way. My message is not for you, actually. It's for people who are already currently maintaining this lifestyle and still feel like there's something missing. I spend all my time on work and "making something of myself". I have a strict schedule. I have a small business that I love. I read constantly and exercise daily. I don't "waste" time. I don't watch dumb movies, play games or watch television, not if I can help it. I subscribe to this thinking 100%. But sometimes I wonder, what is all this for? What's all this money for? They always just go to medical bills. What's this achievement for? To scratch an itch which is my ego. Oh yeah, I also have anxiety, stress, high amounts of acid, insomnia and a host of other medical issues. I think about my death bed and feel sad knowing some people will attend but will not miss me. My friends like me okay. We talk online often. But whenever they invite me out, I am always busy. I don't think I'm really "close" to anyone. You say meaning and value is obvious, but it really isn't. A few decades ago, I told myself I was going to make something of my life. I was going to do things right. I was not going to waste time like stupid people. But then I forgot about the importance of my loved ones and took them for granted. Now, I have to fight that feeling of guilt every time I spend time with people. I try to make time for my loved ones now (little by little), but I always get this voice at the back of my head telling me to get back to work. I start feeling anxiety when somebody takes too much of my time. It's because I'm so used to working. I have to mindfully schedule "relationship-building" activities and commit to it. So no, actually, this kind of thing isn't too effing obvious. It takes clarity and wisdom to realize the importance of having treasured people in your life. It takes persistence and effort to keep them around too.

@ I feel for you, but I think you have to cultivate respect first before you can ask for love and care. I would suggest making something of yourself first, building your self esteem, do something you are proud of and commit to it. When you have that weapon in your arsenal, people will hesitate to walk all over you. My advise is to build your self-esteem by learning a skill. Get really good at it. And then look for ONE person, (or a few, if you are lucky), who really cares for you. At least just ONE person. That person is your home base. Treasure that person and that skill. It will get you started. Then, slowly, gain more respect by being part of a community. Good luck, my friend.

While our recovery program completely agrees with most of this logic I think the writer went off track with that point. The immense amount of time I spent socializing, even if it included alcohol, were some of the best times in my life. As is the time I spend consuming great art on streaming services including KZbin AND some video games. I do not regret the majority of the decades I spent in bars. I just regret overdoing it. I have to say, this is incredibly informative and insightful. However, the only thing I’d argue against is that going for drinks with coworkers/friends and socialising can be a productive use of time, if done once a week or once every two weeks - as humans we’re social beings. Being around the right people can certainly enrich us and improve our mental wellbeing.

It can be as difficult as when you were a child. It just depends on how you see every moment. If you see every moment as if it could be your last, you would have difficulty with accepting you have wasted time. As a child I already regretted wasting time, but in the moment it would still happen.

Excellent!! Many, many good points. What struck me most was this idea of condensed time. I had given this some thought before - the reason we evolve so fast is because experience is cumulative, while with other animals they are always "starting over" from an almost blank slate (save for genetic updates). Reading is invaluable. Thank you for this video :)

No matter what we do in life in the end we will have regrets. If we played too much we will wish we would have worked more, if we worked too much we will wish we would have played more. I should have done this, I should not have done that. When it's all said and done in the end none of it's going to matter. Videos like this don't change anything for the better, they just make everything seem worse than it really is. The key is to not take life so seriously, just live.

I am a 38 year old man, I value time more than anything and now I have been single for 18 months I can't imagine starting to get to know a new person and give up all my hobbies and freedom. Hand on heart I am so grateful I didn't get married or have kids. Because both were on the cards at least once. I don't want kids as I have had mental health stuff going on and misophonia. I have been on craziest journey and discovered Miyamoto Musashi a couple of years ago, which has eventually led me to Stoicism & Philosophy. Seneca, is the one that sticks out by a mile to me and I was already a few steps into this journey without being aware of it. I done a Diploma in Stoicism and now going to study Seneca diligently going forward.

Also a second point, Seneca lived a very stressful and fearful life under the rule of the mad emperor of Rome Nero who he tutored as a boy. that really puts his philosophical ideas into perspective. He had no choice but to accept his intense existence. Nero becoming weary and suspicious of Seneca commanded him to commit suicide.
