It should never have been built. An aircraft carrier assault ship much like the Wasp Class of the US Navy would have provided much more versatility within our Navy. Ocean was a waste of resources that could have been spent better. Failing that her conversion into jet capable flight operations would have been preferable to selling her off. But the MOD has a cruel habit of replacing what we have and never growing on what we have.

Always gets me that these old RN warships are decommissioned from the RN. We spend in the millions to replace. But the old vessel gets a refit and is back in service for another 20 years with another Navy.

We british have still got 3 bay class ships and Hms Albion and Hms bulwark, a Hms ocean is 20 years old and was built to commercial not millitary standards like the Albion class, she would have been decommissioned in a few years anyway, so why not overhaul her and sell her to Brazil, Brazil would be happy with that ship, it'll be there flag ship for a few years. Gd luck Brazil. Also Britains newvQE carriers can hold far far more helicopters and marines than Ocean could ever had. The 5 other uk amphibious operation ships will do fine for the marines but now if embarking from helicopters from QE they will also have stealth jets right behind them, great capability that only a handful if nations have or could build or design, be proud Great Britain, you push well above your weight....,🙂🇬🇧

the thing is the QE class cant operate as a commando carrier like the small Ocean, we still need a dedicated LPH in my opinion. The US and French still operates these kind of ships for a reason.

It's Not an LPH, is a LHD, a landing helicopter Dock ship. Meaning well Dock inside for onload, offload of amphibious landing platforms, from the sea. An LPH, doesn't have possession of a well dock.

The Royal Navy should have kept this valuable multi purpose vessel, it had a fair bit of life left in it. On the subject of R.N. carriers I recently read that the Indian Navy is disposing of the former R.N. carrier known as H.M.S. Hermes. Apparently it is in good working order, and could sail back to the U.K. and be moored on the river Thames near to H.M.S. Belfast. Anyone else heard that news?

HMS Hermes is the oldest carrier in the World now and has been decommissioned by the Indian Navy after 30 years service. There are, I understand, attempts to return her to the UK and allegedly PM Boris Johnson has intervened although that may be just rumour or hearsay. The Thames has been suggested as has Liverpool. I personally would like to see her return to Devonport and Plymouth alongside HMS Courageous.

Which is why she didn't axe the P8 purchase, the frigate upgrades, the small arms rifle , artillery system upgrades and trucks, light armor , or the many other projects in motion. $20 Billion worth in all. She isn't Helen Clark.

Allen .Berge she was built with a commercial hull instead of a military hull and was only supposed to be in service for 20 years. she was also plagued with a lot of maintenance issues there was always something wrong with her. It’s one ship I’m glad to go

The RN does have two New DEEP Water carriers incapable of operating close inshore where they woukd be sitting ducks! Ocean was designed and built as an Assault LPH - something we were critically short of in the Falklands. POW cannot, and will not replace Ocean.

Dont forget, proposals have been made for a new LPH / Assault Ship carrier by the RN to the MOD. So maybe Ocean maybe replaced after all, and not by PoW or QE.

Every time I read 'girl' referencing the old HMS Ocean I kinda chuckle. But It is OK since in English you can chose the "sex" easily thanks to the article being neutral, which isn't true in Portuguese. Not only a ship is male as well as "Atlântico" is also a male name. It really makes everything funny. I just hope the ship doesn't get confused and starts needing a world-renowned psychologist's help just because we are calling it "big boy"!

Yet if the UK gave less foreign aid to Countries that can afford Nuclear weapons ( India and Pakistan) and countries that have bigger armed forces than the UK ( Brasil / Argentina) - ok not as good but bigger...... we could have afforded to keep her. In the real world this would free up money for some additional Type 45s and subs to protect the 2 new carriers but we know that wont happen.

Theres no point in keeping her. Shes going to start becoming and old and outdated ship against the new generation of ones being made. We wont ever match the scale of size the US, China or Russia may have again in production so we must remove the least useful and least reliable ships like this one and keep moving forward. We have 2 aircraft carriers and a 3rd carrier ship is another big thing we dont have enough other ships for. Its uses in wars now are greatly limiting for us particularly as we dont have so much as a regional warfare issues like Brazill has.
