I'm 35 and I still can't write about trauma like this. Every time I try, I just end up writing a song about macaroni and cheese or something similarly silly. I don't dare to even write, let alone share, something that makes me feel so exposed. She's so fucking brave. I love this song and everything she has done.

[Verse 1] I hate you for what you did And I miss you like a little kid I faked it every time But that's alright I can hardly feel anything I hardly feel anything at all [Verse 2] You gave me fifteen hundred To see your hypnotherapist I only went one time You let it slide Fell on hard times a year ago Was hoping you would let it go, and you did [Chorus] I have emotional motion sickness Somebody roll the windows down There are no words in the English language I could scream to drown you out [Verse 3] I'm on the outside looking through You're throwing rocks around your room And while you're bleeding on your back In the glass I'll be glad that I made it out And sorry that it all went down like it did [Chorus] I have emotional motion sickness Somebody roll the windows down There are no words in the English language I could scream to drown you out Hey, why do you sing with an English accent? I guess it's too late to change it now You know I'm never gonna let you have it But I will try to drown you out [Bridge] You said when you met me, you were bored You said when you met me, you were bored And you, you were in a band when I was born [Chorus] I have emotional motion sickness I try to stay clean and live without And I want to know what would happen If I surrender to the sound Surrender to the sound

It speaks volumes to Phoebe’s talent of how much Nashville/Los Angeles/NYC guitar royalty plays with her. All these phenomenal players: Jackson Browne, (underrated as a sheer guitar player) Julian Baker, Blake Mills, Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and my personal favorite, Harrison Whitford. He’s one of my favorites of the LA sideman/studio guitar scene, and his talents for tone and note choice are never as more present as when they do Motion Sickness live. I know her listeners are pretty music savvy people, but I don’t think people comprehend JUST how much musical talent she attracts. It speaks volumes of her instincts as a songwriter and producer that they all want to work for her.
