Thank you for posting this. My dad recently passed away, and his name is John. I know the song has a different meaning, but to me, it feels like an ode to him about moving on. He's the reason I started learning the banjo, so I'm definitely going to learn this in the future. Thank you again.

A version of this melody was used for an old slave spiritual, a version of which was used in the movie, O Brother Where Art Thou (Down To The River To Pray). The oldest version of that song written down had these lyrics: As I went down in the valley to pray, Studying about that good old way, When you shall wear the starry crown, Good Lord, show me the way. O mourner, let's go down, let's go down, let's go down, O mourner, let's go down, Down in the valley to pray

This old song has many verses. The way I first heard it was as a sea shanty. The sailors would sing these to keep the rhythm as they hauled on lines or holystoned the deck. This one wasn't typically melancholy, I imagine Now we go ashore, and we'll work no more Of "pump or drown" we've had full store We'll make her fast and stow our gear The girls are a-waitin on the pier!

I first heard this tune in the game Assassin’s Creed Black Flag when I was younger. One of my favorites from the game. You covered it so well! I especially liked the dynamics change when you played the melody notes by themselves without the chords near the end, and then bringing the chords back in. Very cool

@fishhuntadventureАй бұрын
Yes, peaceful. Enjoyable. Calming tone and contemplative spirit is far too absent in today’s noisy music and its guttural strained vocals. This interpretation compels you to listen while also comfortably willing you to allow it being a soundtrack for your thoughts.
@samuelhatman8995Ай бұрын
Playing for others. They love high energy stuff. But this is beautiful. Playing for players, like yourself. I get it. When I play for me... yes, alone for me, it is much like the treatment you use for this shanty. Room between the note for the emotions to shine through. Blessings on you Phoebe. Thanks for sharing this one.
@fishhuntadventureАй бұрын
“They” is assumptive and stereotyping. I don’t play, but I like good music. I am not an infinitive. I am not “they.” Thankfully neither are most people; thankfully most people don’t look down on others in such an arrogant, conceited fashion.

This sounds like a song that I know quite well that was recorded beautifully by several people but I can't remember which one it was at this time the first thing that comes to mind is something done by Eva Cassidy. And then there's a song that's on the tip of my mind that I can't come up with. I want to say the word Heather is in the title but then maybe not, maybe something similar. No, not heather, but something that evokes England and possibly the moors. And I think all the versions I'm thinking of where a song by a female. I keep wanting to think somebody obvious like Sandy Denny, but no

No, this isn't one of the versions I was referring because the ones I'm thinking of I have on CDs and I think I must have it on CDs by three different artists. And none of them Bluegrass or Irish or Scottish folk. But apparently this is a Scottish Folk song. Anyway I grabbed this one because I saw the banjo and couldn't resist. Then I listened and it is awesome. I think it's going to be my next thing over victim. Hopefully I'll get down a few more of my own songs first but this is just so gorgeous. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lYnMqqiqibCGqrssi=B2nST6qrzuO0BNEf

Always mixed feelings when you start with a frown. You have one of those smiles/frowns that always brings out the same emotion when viewing it but I also know the music will be so beautifully sad and cathartic as well. Like taking medicine or eating something you don't like but will make you feel so much better afterward because it's good for you. 💛*Hugs* Hope you got what you needed out doing this one too. I thought I heard the Old Man say: "Leave her, Johnny, leave her." Tomorrow you will get your pay, And it's time for us to leave her Leave her, Johnny, leave her! Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her! For the voyage is long and the winds don't blow And it's time for us to leave her. Oh, the wind was foul and the sea ran high. "Leave her, Johnny, leave her!" She shipped it green and none went by. And it's time for us to leave her. Leave her, Johnny, leave her! Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her! For the voyage is long and the winds don't blow And it's time for us to leave her. I hate to sail on this rotten tub. "Leave her, Johnny, leave her!" No grog allowed and rotten grub. And it's time for us to leave her. Leave her, Johnny, leave her! Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her! For the voyage is long and the winds don't blow And it's time for us to leave her. We swear by rote for want of more. "Leave her, Johnny, leave her!" But now we're through so we'll go on shore. And it's time for us to leave her. Leave her, Johnny, leave her! Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her! For the voyage is long and the winds don't blow And it's time for us to leave her. From classical music. com: Also known as Leave Her Bullies and Time for Us to Leave Her, the Irish sea shanty Leave Her, Johnny, leave her was often left for the last day of a voyage, when the crew felt free to air their grievances, knowing they would be soon leaving the ship (her). Although the first written record of the song dates to q1917, its origins are unknown, however it shares the same melody as the shanty Across the Western Ocean. Across the Western Ocean was inspired by penniless Irish people desperately trying to flee the potato famine between 1846-1850.
