I like the concept of Phonomancers. It would be interesting to see what would happen with cultures where music is integral to their identities, like the Irish or the Africans.

This comic seems like it's the kind of thing that would be super emotionally resonant with its target audience and incomprehensible to outsiders. That's not a bad thing, the kind of stuff that moves someone to their core is going to be deeply personal. It's just that this sort of thing has to be close to impossible for any outsider to understand. Kudos to Linkara for recognizing that and addressing it in his review.

Damn it, Linkara. When you pronounced 'Kieron Gillen' at around ten seconds into this video, I thought you were saying 'Karen Gillan' and my eyes widened greatly as I said incredulously, "What? Seriously? Karen Gillan...? She made a comic? I'll have to check that out" On the plus side, I now know who Kieron Gillen is and might check out his work in the future.

I heard Take On Me without watching the music video. I thought it was catchy and a song that while the lyrics wasn't anything that stood out, the music itself (the instrumental if I'm not clear) was still incredibly memorable and something I would recognise immediately. After seeing the music video though how memorable that song became probably multiplied by two or more, since not only was the music video incredibly pretty and sticks out even amongst modern music videos, but it adds a story where the song alone had none.

I hate it when a person's messed up and people say: "Oh, it's because they've read The Lord of the Rings." or "It's because they play video games." or "It's because they play roleplaying games." or "It's because they listen to [insert music genre name here]." etc. If a person's messed up it's because they're messed up. Blaming it on random things is just fearmongering.
@roguishpaladin
@roguishpaladin 3 жыл бұрын
This isn't completely right. Yes, the usual "A person's messed up and they play video games, so the video games must have caused it," is indeed incorrect. That's just something called the fundamental attribution error. However, media does contain themes, and people absorb those themes when they absorb media (especially when they do so uncritically). For example, 80s cartoons are notorious for being a very black-and-white view of the world - there's inherently good people and inherently bad people. Couple that with the 80s tendency to have death be the only solution for bad people and you end up with a very stark world view. People aren't born bad - they're molded that way by what they experience in their lives and what they're exposed to. But this is true for movies, television, and books as well - a person who buys into The Godfather probably has a more positive opinion about pursuing violent solutions than one who doesn't.

About the opinion on Take on Me without seeing the video, when I first heard the music, I felt it was... meh. I mean, it was fine, I have a weakness for 80s synth rock, but, strangely enough, it gave me strange perceptions of ugly oranges and pinks and such. When I listen to music, I don't see actual images most of the time, just emotions and abstract thoughts, especially depending on when and where I listen to it. I don't know how Take On Me gave me those thoughts, but something about it just screamed "cheese" and "kitch." But when I saw the music video, I was blown away! Suddenly a whole new artistic level was thrown in, where the music was perfectly timed with the action and the originality of the video flowed into the surrealism of the song, creating a wonderful, irresistible mixture! So the music video actually turned a song I heard and then immediately forgot I heard into one of my favorite songs of all time! Same with I Believe In a Thing Called Love by The Darkness. If the visuals emphasize the song, it makes both 100x better! On the opposite side of the spectrum, though, I used to like A-Ha's followup single The Sun Always Shines On TV and Soundgarden's Black Hole Sun, but then I saw the disturbing and depressing music videos of both and now I want to stay as far away from both as I can...

As a power metal fan I've never had a moment of the music video changing the meaning of a song. Power metal is usually about epic tales of heroism and triumph in battle(real or fictional) or making your stand against immersible odds. live or die you've made your mark. If anything the music video gives more context as well as a visual to the epic music

Its not hard to summarize Degrassi. Its pretty much "Hunger Games + Final Destination + Dawsons Creek = Degrassi." Its fun to see if in this episode the characters come out unscathed either emotionally, physically or psychologically. If they ever did an in-character reunion special it would be more like getting a bunch of Vietnam veterans together to reminisce about the war than a collection of high school graduates. They all had PTSD by the end of the show.

I agree with you - it would be interesting to see a study about how music and music videos interact and affect each other :) Two things related to that train of thought (kinda): 1) I actually heard a-Ha's song "Take on me" looong before watching the movie - mainly due to the fact that I was born in 1991 and a lot of the music videos I watched were shown on German (and sometimes French) TV (I'm from Denmark). I remember that the intro to the song always made me want to dance and that the song made me happy - I would try to sing along as well; even on the iconic intro. To me the song has always been memorable because of the unique intro (and when it's repeated later in the song) - the lyrics themselves don't stand out that much in my opinion, but the intro beat does! When my mom showed me the video some years later it just made the song even better for me (^_^) 2) I thought "So what" was a song about independence as well - I didn't even know there was a video until watching this video (in 2019!) (-_-)''' I hope this answers some of your questions. Please keep making awesome content like this - it makes me happy to watch you rage on bad comics :) PS: Please excuse any spelling or grammar errors (because poor literacy ;)) - English is not my native language.

@bthsr7113
@bthsr7113 4 жыл бұрын
I would defend the whole "it only has to make sense to me" since their powers are based heavily on their emotions, so it's entirely possible that your perception and mental state determine how you tap into that power. The reason I'm not defending her is because everyone in this is a little obnoxious at best, and she is not the best. Also, the biggest hole in the theory is how there can be an overarching magic system that unifies all the personal ones without being almost useless for explanation or balance control. Though everyone being self-taught could lead to consistent elitism, and since you shape your own powers, a very competitive environment sine it reflects on you.

+Linkara-AtopTheFourthWall I've listened to oldies since birth and I haven't seen a single music video until I was in 11th grade, and still, I'm not much into them with a few exceptions. As someone who listened to Take On Me a lot in my early life and not knowing that it even had a video until my second year of college, I can tell you that I loved the song-particularly for the energy of the music juxtaposed with the mellowness of the singer's voice, all coming to a head when he raises his pitch to bring your ears back to focusing on the music. The music->lyrics->music focus of the song is pretty rare, then and today. The music video is really cool and one of my favorites (with Video Killed the Radio Star along with it), but I don't always associate the song to the video. In fact, I don't think about the video unless it's playing at the time. (As for the 'original' music video...I wasn't aware there was a different one.) So, that's only one man's experience, but I hope it sates your curiosity a bit.

You mention Grant Morrison, as - though he didn't write this - this work still seems to incorporate what I like, and what I hate, about him. There is a definite Morrison feel to this. And that brings the good (a certain energy even in relatively slow paced works, tremendous creativity, and a willingness to run with wild ideas [probably why he does silver age pastiches so well]) and the bad (fixation on personal fetishes [Morrison's magic, this comic's music], pretentiousness, tendency toward navel gazing, and a habit of mistaking confusion for depth of message). So, yes, there is something very Morrison-like about this.

An interesting route you're taking your storyline in, Linkara. While I could see Vyce becoming the new Entity, I don't see him as the main antagonist here (the Freddy figure). Pleas hear me out as I explain why. The reason why I don't see Vyce and the Freddy figure as the same is that, simply, Vyce is just too straightforward with fighting his enemies and getting to his goals. He doesn't mess around or try to play with them and, even when he does, it's always inadvertently (like with how he inadvertently made Linkara think that, when he took Pollo's new body at the His Blue Soul arc, he was Mechakara). Heck, that's the whole reason for his calling Linkara 'champion', not because he's a worthy opponent, but because taking him (and others) out will be the fastest way of bringing the world to its knees. The only thing I can think of where he deliberately mess with Linkara was with the 'A Story of Magic' story arc, and even then it's more of Mechakara idea. The Freddy figure, on the other hand, played around with Linkara. Like how, back at October 2015 he made Linkara think he slashed his face when he didn't and how he referred to his battle as a game. Or how about that mysterious chess match Linkara is playing where black seems to be moving by themselves. Or how about October 2016, with the spirits. The only straightforward thing he did (if he did it) was taking down Comicron One and even then, it's an obvious piece to take out of the way considering how powerful it is. Unless living as pure data for so long affected Vyce's thinking and actions to be more like the Entity, I don't see him and the Freddy figure as the same.

I don't know if anyone noticed, but when Linkara was talking about the King, I think it was referring to Michael Jackson. He was extending his shimmering glove hand. Also, when I see that, I'm reminded of Videodrome, only by an image something unnatural coming out of a TV.

I don't think this book would be for me ether. I'm pretty music illiterate so most of it would fall on deaf ears. Its interesting how somethings how different a creators indie work is to their big two (Marvel & DC) stuff. For example i love Matt Fractions Hawkeye run, but tried his image series ODY-C and it didn't click at all for me. That being said, Modern Image is how a started comic reading, with the walking dead and the exceptional SAGA by Brian K.

The first two are also pretentious as fuck, but taken together there's a reoccurring theme across all three that the characters' pretensions are just excuses they cling to because they're too afraid to grow and chance as people, and eventually giving up their phonomancy is a sign that they're finally putting away childish things.

You know, that's all well and good, but we still have to spend a comic book with these fuckheads. Fine, they're pretentious, that's the point, buuuut why am I reading when I hate everyone?

@@gregdeandrea1450 And that is the problem with so many "deep" comics.....they go so much into their philosophy that they forget that the characters are just talking heads and dont give us a reason to care

You should read Gillen and Mckelvie's take on Young Avengers Volume 2. It's definitely different from other superhero stories. Lot's of references to music and pop culture and existential dilemma's such as did Wiccan use his powers unknowingly to make Hulking fall in love with him? It's also a big turning point for Loki as a character as he goes through his own identity crisis.

Man, I've missed a LOT of this show. Comicron 1 going down and 90's kid doing weird stuff. How far back do I need to backtrack in order to get up to speed on what's been going on with the side plot stuff? As for the comic: if you are totally a horrible person, what's the point in splitting up your personality? On that note, what's with the trend of making the "hero" character unlikable or bland? Seems like a lot of that is going around these days.

!!!hey heads up, this is a seriously big trigger warning for self harm, self harm scars, and attempted suicide!!! the time stamp first talking about it is here from 5:34 to 6:14 and is talked about while showing the prep work for said suicide attempt from 27:08 to 27:18 there are scars shown here from 13:45 to 15:05 !there is a suicide attempt (with visuals of bleeding cuts) 28:25 to 28:36 and it's shown again in full at 29:53 to 30:03 ! just putting this out there as a warning, I know this video is old but I was going through a bunch of videos that I didn't watch and not having these warnings did throw me in for a loop and trigger my self harm urges again, I luckily did not relapse but I thought is would be good to have a warning in the comment section regardless stay safe out there y'all, love you! ^-^ now if you excuse me, I'm going to go watch cute cat videos and share funny memes with my friends Edit: I'm so sorry I forgot one timestamp also discussing suicide in the original comment, I wasn't exactly firing on all cylinders when I was originally looking for the timestamps but it's fixed now!

Are these characters supposed to come across as pretentious unlikeable jerks? This is a genuine question as they come across that way, but I'm not sure if that is part of the themes or just how they're written. Static bikers vs dancing zombies would be a big improvement.

Homura Akemi Well all Vyce needs is an "alternate form" like Ganondorf is for the pig and yeah. Pretty much the same.

@shadowlinkbds

Homura Akemi Or maybe he's more of like Sigma from Megaman X instead of ganondorf. Sigma became living data/virus in the series and so did Vyce. Thoughout the x series Sigma keeps coming back but in different bodies/robotic forms just like Vyce is now. So he's not actually Ganondorf he's really Sigma.

You know, every time I see Sarris, I suddenly think and see her as Bulma instead. Consider the voice actor for Sarris is the same person who voice Bulma in DBZ Abridged.

Well that's another thing I'm going think about every time I hear take on me which is an awesome song btw that I would recommend everyone to listen who hasn't listen to it already. The others being the actual music video, that one scene in family guy where chris was in the grocery store, and metal gear solid 5.
