Great setup. The 100-500L is a stunning lens. Sharp in all range. Light and Compact. Two cons are the aperture that can be too high for some scenarios that will end with high ISO and the 2nd the min focal of 300mm when using teleconverter.

I'm coming to the discussion late. After a lot of prayer, I opted to go from the Canon 80d with a 600mm Sigma lens to the Nikon Z9. For a lens I didn't have a lot of options, but ended up going with an adapted Nikon FX 200-500. It's literally the heaviest combo I could get in. What sets it apart is that I have a consistent aperture of 5.6. I love the 20FPS raw with no rolling shutter and a stacked sensor. I also notice the colors are a lot better than my Canon. If I get noisy images because of high ISO, I run the image through DXO denoise which cleans it up really well. It comes with a Lightroom plugin to make it easy. I really was considering the R5, but dared to go Nikon because how would I ever know what a different brand was like unless I tried it? The controls are much better and intuitive that my Canon ever was. With that being said, it's really hard to get a bad camera and the Nikon was a good choice because I don't trudge through the mountains, at least not yet.
@JimmyBreitenstein Жыл бұрын
Thanks for joining the discussion, it's never too late to share your experience! That sounds like a great combo, one I'm not too familiar with. I learned how to use a DSLR on Nikon, and my experience was a bit different than your, hence why I switched to Canon. It really goes to show that each user has different viewpoints and opinions. So many people get so obsessed about names and specific cameras or features that they forget they really are all cameras and for the most part they just do the same thing. After using the combo that I discussed in this video for a while now, it's probably become my favorite combo I've used thus far. Thanks again for sharing your experience and camera setup, I really appreciate it. Good luck in your photo adventures!

Thank you Jimmy for showing us those very great owls. There are beautifull and inspiring. Finding the good setup is a way. I moved from Canon 5D4 + sigma 150-600mm to an Olympus omd em1 mark3 + 40-150mm f2.8 +converter x2 because of the weight (I prefer a very very light gear), the silent shutter (as you mentionned it) and all the stabilizations capabilities of this body. Hi Jimmy. Great images and interesting vid as always. My thoughts on kit are similar to yours, but I went down the Sony route. I've been mirrorless for about 7 years, and my big lens is the Sony 200-600mm on a 1.5x crop sensor. The best feature is that the zoom is entirely internal, so when zooming there is no lens extension/movement for the wildlife to spot. Thanks again for all the great content. Look forward to the next vid. Cheers.

When you said you were just using the R5 for video, I thought it was strange. Strange, because when I bought the R5, I loved it so much I bought my wife the R6 and my 1DXII sat on a shelve until I finally sold it a while back. The resolution is so much better, the files are so much better, the sensor is better in low light. The electronic shutter is amazingly fast and silent. The battery grip allows me to shoot for days. The RF lens lineup is amazing. I could go on and on, Jimmy. Bottom line is you’ll love the mirror less setup. We have the very affordable F11 600mm and 800mm and they are better than I imagined they’d be. The 100-500 is wonderful, the RF600mm F4 of course spectacular. The 15-35mm 2.8, the macro 100 2.8 is great. All of the RF lenses we own are great. Sold all the EF glass to purchase RF glass and couldn’t be more happy. Looking forward to seeing many more of your KZbin videos sharing the experiences of your updated setup. Keep up the good work, Jimmy! You inspire us.

Another great video with my bucket list bird the Great Gray Owl. Congratulations on the new lens, a couple of my friends are using that combination and I am sure you are going to love it. I also notice that your images are much better with the new lens and camera. I am a Nikon shooter and like you I have gone lighter, I still shoot with a D500 and a D850. I used to use a 500mm f4 but found it too heavy and have gone to a 500mm PF and a 300 f4 PF, much lighter and almost as good image quality. I would like to go to mirrorless but the only camera that is suitable in Nikon for wildlife is the Z9 and in Canada with tax runs over $8K, a little to rich for me at this time. Thanks for your views on what you think is an ideal outfit, Have a great week.

But I also have the RF100-500 which I love and sometimes when I do need a light day out set up I use this lens on the R5 it's a great set up. And how does it do in low light compared to something like the 1DXII?

@@JimmyBreitenstein Hi Jimmy, I think the R3 is the best ISO performing Canon camera I have ever had, definitely better than the R5 and I would say better than both my DX2 and 3, low light is amazing, I have even shot it at ISO 16,000 with a little noise reduction you can get images that were not possible before, I am sure that stacked sensor has something to do with it. Me personally I have never been a fan of high megapixel cameras, I don't print large and don't do stupid crops, and when you upload to web or social media you can't tell what mp a camera is. Maybe (R5/100-500) the best bang for the buck$ right now. Have to look at the over-all system within one's budget. So, budget AF capabilities, native & 3rd party lenses available. Not just wildlife, (although it is better than 50% of my photography). I have to say the new Sony 7R5/200-600 peaks my interest right now that Sony has added Focus Stacking. What would lean me toward the Canon system, being able to use their 1-5x macro &, tilt-shift EF Lenses with the adapter. Although there is probably an adapter that would allow those lenses to be used with the Sony cameras also. Renting or if your local camera store is having a camera manufacture real use trial event going on is great advice. Would you have chosen a 400, 2.8 or 600 f4 lens if budget allowed? I know I would if I had the disposable income to. Very rarely would the fixed focal length be to long. Enjoy your new equipment. Nice photos.

You are right, what is best for each person out there will vary, and learning, experience, and travel would be more valuable than just getting the most expensive kit, especially in the early and intermediate stages. You have been shooting most of the video over the past few years using the r5 with the tamron 150-600 right? I think the video has always looked really good. You touched on this in the video, but did the eye auto focus work at all with the tamron? Or did you have to always have to use an alternate focusing mode? How would you compare the sharpness of the tamron versus the rf100-500? I have been shooting with the Canon 5d Mark IV and the first-generation Tamron 150-600. For those reading this I will caution the first generation collects so much dust INSIDE the lens and I have not figured out a way to clean it so paying more for the Tamron 150-600 G2 is worth it. Otherwise, I like my combo, and my 5d mark IV dslr body is very good in low light and more than enough for any landscape or portrait photography needs, even at a publishing level. I can see the benefits of mirrorless for wildlife photography though with the eye tracking and video capabilities. Trying to figure out a lens if I switch. What holds me back from switching to mirrorless system is the cost, as the r5 and that lens is a total of $7,000. On the full frame r5 I would be losing the 600 capacity the max aperture is 7.1 which makes me hesitant given all the low light work I do and putting a teleconverter would make it like an f9 lens. What's the highest you feel comfortable pushing ISO on the r5? I am almost wondering if trying the r7 with the 100-500 might be the way to go since it effectively puts the reach at 840mm with the crop sensor while staying at the f 7.1. And last but not least, love the great gray owl shots in this video, and the previous two-part series!
@JimmyBreitenstein2 жыл бұрын
Hey John, thanks so much for the input and wonderful questions. I'll do my best to answer them all, please remind me if I miss one. I have been using the Tamron on the R5 for nearly 2 years now. At first, it was great, no issues whatsoever. The animal eye detection worked fine and the subject tracking worked well. With more and more use I noticed it started getting slower and slower, the focus couldn't keep up or would stop working altogether. It's at the point where I can barely use them together anymore and it's sad how much content I've had to throw away because it was out of focus. Honestly, I just think the lens has been put through so much, it's just having a hard time now. The sharpness on the Tamron is really good up to about 400mm, but gets pretty soft fairly quickly unless the light is perfect. This model also collects dust on the inside elements, but not nearly as bad as the first model, and I've been in some really dusty places! The R5 is great, I've pushed the ISO to 4000 in some cases, but I generally try not to exceed 2500 in most cases. This is where I'll miss my old setup, the 1DXII is sooo good in low light scenarios and with higher ISO. I hope I got everything, please let me know if you have any other questions!

@@JimmyBreitenstein Thanks, those answers are great. I was curious about your extended use of the Tamron with the R5 so that is good feedback. Sounds like if I ever do switch to mirrorless I will have to move on from the tamron lens too. I agree the top of the line canon dslrs have really good low light/high ISO performance too!

I went with the same R5 100-500 almost went Sony A1 and 200-600 like my sister has but after using it, the menu system drove me nuts and the color off compared to Canon so I had to do some minor adjustments, the animal eye af is awesome on the R5 hard to past up, but hey these cameras these days are incredible if you can't take great shots, it's on you, get more practice practice practice,

Thanks so much for the input! Both of those camera options and lenses are wonderful, it really does just come down to personal preference. You said it well, it's all about practice and using the camera to the best of its ability.

While I wouldn't ask you to disclose your exact photography location, it would be nice to know generally where you are.

Thanks for not asking for specifics. Western U.S. is about as specific as I get these days. Thanks for understanding 😊

Most hobbyists would have financial constraints, I suppose. I don't think that the majority of us would be completely free to choose the gear. In my case, I was committed to Canon because I already had a Canon camera and some lenses. Switching to another brand that I don't have experience with would be too expensive and risky. I found it interesting that you didn't mention anything about particular features or image quality. Instead, your main worries are usability and portability. Being realistic, wildlife photography is an expensive hobby and most of us would only be able to own average gear and rely on our abilities (which in most cases is enough for great results).

Thanks so much for the input! I used a kit camera and lens for quite some time until I saved up for the Tamron lens. It's been great for many years but I thought it was time to upgrade. I totally understand the financial burden new camera gear can be, hence why I try to get the most of what I have for as long as possible. You bring up a good point about overall image quality. I really should have touched on that in this video but it was already getting fairly lengthy and I've talked about it in some previous videos. I try to test all the gear I get before I purchase it just so I know that the quality is good. When I can't test it myself, I rely on user reviews and such. But as a full-time photographer, quality is definitely a top priority. Thanks again for the input, I always appreciate it!

It's a shame Canon never opted to make a 100 or 150-600, I feel sometimes 500mm is just a little short for wildlife.
@JimmyBreitenstein2 жыл бұрын
I agree that 500mm can be a bit short at times, especially with smaller critters. Though, I have started taking more images with a zoomed out approach, showing more of the landscape and I really like it

When I saw the title of this video I immediately thought I am of the opinion that there is no such thing as a "perfect camera and lens" combination for any kind of photography. I started out with a Nikon D7100 and a Sigma 150-600mm Sport lens. This combination served me very well for a while. Then I moved to the Nikon D850 camera body but still used the same lens. Later I upgraded to the Nikon 600mm F/4E lens which in my opinion is somewhat better in various ways than the Sigma and/or the Tamron 150-600mm lenses. I happen to believe that all telephoto lenses are better than zoom lenses. I realize you are probably referring to your opinion of what the "perfect" camera/lens combination is. I understand it is all subjective to each individual. My intention is not to be argumentative but just expressing my opinion.

I really appreciate your comment and feedback. I agree with what you said, there really is no perfect camera combination out there. It all depends on the photographer, their priorities and preferences. That was the point I was hoping to make with this video and I hope it came across well. Good luck out there in your own photo adventures!
