Love your tenacity to not settle for mediocrity. A great reminder to spend time and patience in your location. As in your final edit the shot was always there, just had to SEE it👍

Thanks Daniel. It’s certainly the case a lot of the time. I’m not interested at all in adding something to the portfolio just for the sake of having something new to share or to try and justify the time and effort going out. The ten failed attempts make the one successful trip far more rewarding in the end. Nature keeps teaching and revealing itself if new ways, if we’re willing to listen. Cheers :)

Love the end result. Patience pays off in the end. Quite often I would run up to the base of the waterfall and quickly look for a rock or leaf as my token foreground just to tick that box. Then wonder why I'm not entirely happy with the end result. Man, I need to get back down to Fiordland. Such a stunning location.

Right on man! That’s essentially what this was all about, looking beyond the obvious and trying to find exactly what speaks to you. Cheers 👊🏻

That composition almost looks like a yin yan symbol. The arch of the tree and the waterfall with the river grabbing into each other

Can't believe how similar the forests seem to BC with all the moss and roots and ferns! Just beautiful! Well done, Will :-)

For sure! Both wonderful temperate rainforests. Must be why I've always felt called to CA. Still want to get over there again and AK eventually! Hope you are well :)

Fantastic shot you ended up with! It's great watching the way your mind works and your assessment of each part of the location: I would probably have been happy with the frame at the 3.00 or the 3.24 min marks, but I can see the difference in waiting for that final frame. Wonderful work Will!

Pleasantly surprised to see you start doing KZbin videos! I love these in the field type of videos. It's great to see the process for how you work a scene. I spent three summers doing extended backpacking trips along most of the southern alps, and Fiordland holds a special place in my heart. I didn't dabble in landscape photography back then, but your videos are really inspiring me to get back! Look forward to following along vicariously through your videos until then :)

Thanks for sharing Will, I think you ended up with a magical image. I really struggle at times with composition, so it is great to see how you see things and work through the process in getting the composition you want. Also sharing our back yard, how truly beautiful it is.

The compostition at 2:59-3:03 seems nice, with ferns as forground, and a left tree, may need a pano with two vertical shots? Anyway, step back is really a good way to find more interesting looks!

Definitely a nice frame there that would make a solid image. Just felt a little too easy and not really including the particular trees I liked.

You certainly earned that shot, not easy country to move around in especially when everything is wet and slippery. Although it would have been a little frustrating I think that you would have been content with just having that experience of being in a beautiful location if you hadn't come away with a shot at all. Really enjoying these videos where you explain your thought process for a composition, the settings and the follow up with the edit. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for the comment and following John, really appreciate it. Definitely rugged and wet terrain down this way. I learned very early on though that if you can’t appreciate the journey, than you’ll get over it all pretty quickly. Thankfully that’s the part I love most, even the most challenging ends up being rewarding (once some of the pain has subsided) haha. An image is really just an added bonus. Thanks again.

Great video. It's always good to see... how you get to the location, your thought processes, that you take the time to explore the potential and to explain in detail what is going through your mind all the way through, and the type of things that may get the result you are looking for in the scene... or what could be missing. Excellent and totally helpful! I must say that the drop behind you looked well dodgy.

Haha, cheers. It’s usually these forest scenes that I find most time consuming and what I usually walk away from empty handed. At the same time they’re some of the most enjoyable to shoot, because they are so complex. There was a handful of very ‘easy’ shots here, but that’s not rewarding after doing this for 10 years. It’s good to push yourself creatively. Anyways I’ve gone on a rant haha cheers mate!

Great video, William. I would have got heaps more shots in no time and left telling myself, “Yep, nailed it.” Got home and went, “Bugger, I thought I nailed it?” Maybe my approach next time I venture out will be different. Thanks for more awesome content and stunning scenery.

William...nice pic...thanks for your transparency in searching for that composition...I know it is not always easy...but still love the outdoors...like you said. Do you have 4 seasons where you are? We are heading into our most colourful time of the year in Nova Scotia Canada...looking foward to revisiting some locations and to try out new locations this fall. Thanks for the tips...take care till next time.
