Interesting video... I consider Lightroom and Photoshop to be complementary to one another rather than one or the other. I usually start in Lightroom working on highlight/shadow levels and colour adjustments before moving to Photoshop for more creative adjustments (such as dodging and burning, content aware fill, cloning etc) and sharpening. I love the range and creative control that having familiarity with both programs gives me.

I too start in lightroom, do raw adjustments.. then finish in photoshop, then when I am done, save back into Lightroom for organizing. Fully agree round tripping is my preferred workflow

Hi Nick, Nice video on some of the differences between PS and LR. Focus stacking and exposure blending can only be done in PS, but for your first example, it can be done very well in LR using a graduated filter on the sky and turning on the new range mask feature. The affected range of the filter can be adjusted using the sliders and you can apply additional effects like highlight control, clarity etc. For most amateur photographers, PS takes a long time to figure out and master. They just don't have the time to dedicate to using it with enough frequency to learn all the power of the application.

How about looking at both apps as a two step process. Use Lightroom to start with basic global adjustments that might be adequate for an image intended for basic photo journalism. If you have one of those special images, perhaps intended to be one of the highlights of a wedding photo shoot, you would for sure move it into Photoshop to continue working with local- fine adjustments. What you will find will happen though is the more one works with Photoshop the less often will you be satisfied with processing simply in Lightroom.

The majority of people on Toms channel didn't expect it to be free but were surprised at how high it was priced. I believe you have priced it for the people who can afford to go on your workshops, something a lot of us can only dream of. Most comments suggested a lower price would mean that you could sell more. Your channel viewers cover every economic income. I support you by watching your channel and then was hoping to support you more but can't justify spending that much (75.00 and you would have had an order). Also in the trailer there is only 3 quick clips showing training which also questions its valve. Sorry I am unable to help you.
@NickPage4 жыл бұрын
I think that given the amount of educational content, it would be impossible to go any lower. If you compare it to other tutorials of the same scope.. its actually cheaper, then when you divide it by four.. yeah. I understand what your saying its unfortunately not in everyone's budget, but when viewed as an virtual workshop with 4 instructors rather than just one, I think the price can be justified. I think that those that see the value in paid content will see the value.... and those that prefer free content wont.

You can adjust the sky in LR by using the gradient tool and applying a color/luminosity mask. Much easier in my opinion, and I've been using Photoshop since 1990, and still use it for the final edit.
@NickPage5 жыл бұрын
Easier yes, but not nearly as powerful or flexible. It depends on the end goal you’re shooting for. Keep in mind that range masking and light room is not luminosity masking And nowhere near as powerful
@jimbass21275 жыл бұрын

@NickPage5 жыл бұрын
@@jimbass2127 yep it was Alabama Hills. The difference is the lack of ability to target or fine tune. It is masking .. kindof but its just guess work and not very refine able. its like comparing pliers to a wrench of the correct size.. there are times that you can make it work.. but many times that its just not a good enough tool for the job. Nick I agree with you that PS can do many things that LR can’t. But I believe many of the things you’re doing in PS in this video you can do then in LR a lot easier! Like in the first picture, I could use a local brush on the sky that would only affect the sky and not the rocks. Your buddy Thomas has demonstrated this capability in LR in many videos. Anyway, thanks for sharing your knowledge. I greatly appreciate it!
@NickPage5 жыл бұрын
Focus stacking and exposure blending and makeing perfect selections in the sky or not something Lightroom can do
@grmrtnz5 жыл бұрын
@@NickPage like I said, I agree with you that PS can do a lot more things. But don't fall into the trap of downplaying a tool because you know another one really well or feel more comfortable working in it. I believe that many of the adjustments can be performed a lot quicker and as effectively in LR. When my team designs software we strive to hide the complex techie work from the end user. Users should be able to perform their tasks with a minimum of effort. That is why Luminar and Aurora HDR are gaining on LR, PS, and older editing tools. If Luminar 4 can live up to the hype, I can see a large group of LR users moving over to it. Once again, thanks for sharing your knowledge and taking the time to reply to my comments.
@NickPage5 жыл бұрын
@@grmrtnz Lightroom has its place, in my own workflow as well.. just not when I want to really want to do my best on an image. Lightroom is great, for quick and easy, but not for taking full control. LR can do the layer masking too. It's far more robust than it used to be -- i.e., does auto selection based on luminance and color, hard edges, etc. PS does have more advanced selection tools, but LR might surprise you. I've learned that LR can easily handle 99% of my workflow and that I don't have the time or really interest for the remaining 1%.
@NickPage5 жыл бұрын
I disagree about the usefulness of the range masking in Lightroom. I know some are impressed by it, but I find it to be pretty useless. Sometime I will make a video showing my point of view on it. It depends on how serious post processing is to the person I suppose. Layer masks, luminosity selections and blend if options cant be competed with in lightroom, they just cant.
@rickeycarter5 жыл бұрын
Nick Page that is fair. PS can indeed do more but everything you showed with the masking can be done just as thoroughly in LR. It could be a nice “edit-a-thon” challenge.
