Being teacher in speed skating, I caught Osteoarthritis, beginning 7 years ago, accelerating fast to most joints over 4 years, to near wheelchair. Then diagnosed with cancer between stomack and the intestine. After that hughe improvement over a year. Was told that the nutrition to joints and nails comes from that part. Now functional to average of 5000 steps daily and peak at 8-10.000. Lubrication is back in smaller amounts. What is damaged is unrepairable, but very slow decay now.🇩🇰

Great overview! Thanks for the over use versus under use clarification! I've been increasing workouts - wanted to make sure it helped versus hurt.

It’s a common question Daryl ! Hopefully you can be confident to start increasing your work outs but just make sure it’s slow and steady. The only way to find your limits is to nudge into them.

I have this condition and I use the last splint you showed us in the thumb video. I am in the USA.

Thanks for this informative video. Your explanations are really clear. I'm in the process of getting my situation assessed by a specialist but I've been having symptoms that could relate to this as I went from a very sporty active life to a period of sedentarism due to particular circumstances that also involved a lot of stress and tension. It has been weird to me that symptoms seem to alleviate when I go back to more demanding exercising for my joints (such as the one I used to) and tend to increase over periods of inactivity or "relax" with the use of electronics devices (which I'm limiting now). You're probably the first professional I hear that mentions this rather than just blaming it on "overuse". Greetings from Chile.

Thanks for commenting Marcela. Yes I really dislike terms ‘overuse’ or ‘wear and tear’ for OA. It sends out the wrong message and is just plain wrong. I much prefer ‘use it or lose it’ and ‘motion is lotion’ 😊 Best wishes Stephen

Thanks for the video. Can I ask a question? I'm a 30yo male, been drawing for the past 7 years, recently became a full-time artist. Last year I was diagnosed with OA in my right drawing hand. At first I didn't pay much attention to it, but this year it's started to be noticeable, the middle and ring finger grew into a ( bracket - shape along with very visible spurs in a few places (especially the joint I use to rely a pencil on). I've become really worried about my future. I know for a fact that it's hereditary, my grandma has it all over her hands, but she's in her 70s, not 30s! Would you say that it matters if I put pressure on that distal middle finger joint with a pencil? It's how you usually hold a pencil. The pressure is not big, but rather for long periods of time. Drawing sessions might take 4-6 hrs once or twice per day.

I address hand and finger arthritis in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJmvnHeFhbuci6csi=vKHI69ZuqlvV_hTc If it’s not painful when pinch gripping a pencil then I wouldn’t worry. An x Ray would be useful though.

@@PhysioMSK Thank you very much, and I really appreciate you taking time to answer me. I can't say it's painful, but there's an itchy sensation after a drawing session, little redness. I will watch the video right now, thank you! One more thing, please 🙏, what should I look for particularly in that X-Ray? Thank you again.
@PhysioMSK
@PhysioMSK 5 ай бұрын
@@nulldata9832 there are some x-Ray examples in that video but generally you look for arthritic changes in the DIP joints. This is the job of a radiologist or orthopaedic specialist though. You shouldn’t be interpreting x-Ray results yourself.

sounds like a bit of mild joint swelling, which is common in arthritis.
