I love how humble she is, “…if I were talented I wouldn’t have to work so hard.” Also, “…every child is a miracle really…”

97 years old and still playing the piano? We need more pianists like her in the world who can teach the importance of music making and practicing fine art for people who want to experience it more. As Henri Matisse (1869-1954) once said: "Creativity takes courage."

I read her biography, "Forbidden Childhood," maybe 40 years ago now. Being a professional musician myself who also had a very tough childhood, I took encouragement from her story. And here she is at 97, still being a shining light in our world !

The most youthful and exuberant 97 years of age (certainly, old is not appropriate), I have ever seen. What an inspiration! Mo Rocca and his colleagues did a superb job here. Her virtuosity and technique are impeccable.

I saw her play in person at LVC because Professor Morman Stahlman teaches piano and organ here. She had a recital for us and she was absolutely amazing. I talked to her after the performance at a seperate talk she was doing. She was absolutely great to talk to and she definitely is enjoying her life. She provides such a beam of positive energy to the LVC Community during a time where we’re trying to recover from the pandemic and we’re honestly so lucky to have her 💙

I love this video, as a passionate amateur classical pianist and more importantly, perpetual student of music with an abiding fascination in this form of art. In a seemingly peripheral observation I want to draw attention to 4:54 in this video. Notice the glass-domed clock in the background. Hardcore enthusiasts of classical piano seem genetically disposed to love mechanical clocks, myself included. I believe it has to do with the beauty of the metal mechanism with its steady rhythmic operation, and the appealing sound it produces (obviously metronome-like, but not liked for mimicking that, rather for the mechanism and beauty of clocks themselves). If you ever have a passionate classical enthusiast you want to give a gift to, a beautiful mechanical clock cannot go wrong (or a voucher/credit/gift certificate so the pianist can choose; the downside is there’s also finickiness about personal taste). This mechanical clock in the video is especially fitting for a 94 year old pianist: it’s called an “anniversary clock” which can run for an ENTIRE YEAR on one winding!! (Most clocks are wound either once a week - 8 day movement, they build a “grace period” reserve power into the design, or monthly - “31 day movement). The anniversary clock uses what’s called a “torsion” pendulum that rather than swinging back and forth, rotates on a very fine thread-like cable. They are surprisingly affordable, used, on EBay and other websites, including shopgoodwill.com

I read Ruth's story in the Reader's Digest years ago. Her story is the reason I tell KZbin "I don't like the video" when a video of a so-called child prodigy comes up. A child should be allowed to live a child's life.

After watching this interview, I am amazed by two things - that she turned out as well as she as a person, considering how she was raised. Secondly, that the love of playing piano returned to her later on.
