Picard's FIRST Command - USS Stargazer - Star Trek Ship Breakdown

Jean-Luc Picard is most well known for captaining of the Galaxy-class USS Enterprise-D and the Sovereign-class USS Enterprise-E but there is another ship which he Captained for almost 20-years which was his first command! This would be the USS Stargazer, a ship that we know is going to become very relevant again in the upcoming Star Trek: Picard Season 2, airing on March 3rd, 2022!

Star Trek Online has a Stargazer class, from those few shots, it looks similar. Wouldn't be the first ship pulled from non-canon, like the Luna class USS Titan in Lower Decks.

I know not entirely trek related but the Gundam Stargazer in the SEED series ova is named after this ship. Just a missed opportunity for the production team to not hide a model of the Stargazer into the display case on the newer Sagen class Stargazer.

I believe stargazer was built at the lunsr shipyards. ( yoyodyne ship yard were several constitution vessels were build )

How do you command the same ship for 20 years? Kirk did one five year tour, Will Decker took over, Kirk did another five, then Spock. After that Kirk commanded the Enterprise-A for another round. Given the amount of Starfleet commissions, most command officers wouldn’t even be able to command because Captains don’t rotate out. There isn’t enough ships for normal career progression.

your info on the era of the ship was all wrong. Constellation class ships were in commissioned in the very late 23c the Hathaway was commissioned just before the start of the 24c. There were around the time TMP the Voyage home until they were decommissioned in the mid 24c. The Ambasdador Class were also decommissioned at that time as well due not upgrading system layouts. There were only 5 ships of the Constellation class that were in service. The USS constellation was disabled by a probe, the USS Hathaway was decommission and recommissioned as a training ship. USS Valkyrie was decommissioned before the USS Stargazer went missing. The last ship was seen was the USS Victory Laforg's old ship during a blockade with the romulans. The Victory was the last active heavy cruiser of the 23c but her fate is unknown.

I'm not going to lie, I've never liked the Stargazer... to me it looks like a frying pan got married to a 4 fingered desk clamp, like a cup holder that fits to the air vent in your car!! I do like the interior they showed in TNG though and the updated interior in the Picard trailor also looks very nice.

"For almost 20 years..." Erm, actually MORE then 20 years. He became Captain of the Stargazer in 2333 and the ship was lost in 2355. That makes 22 years.

I dont believe there is a hard date for when Picard took command. He was an officer on the ship in 2333, then at some point the captain and first officer were killed and he took command.

@@DrewLSsix This has all been stated in the TV show. It is said, that Picard had the command over the Stargazer for 22 years and the ship was lost in 2355. So it is easy to calculate that he took command in 2333. This has also been established in the official Fact Files. And thus this is canon.

@@champbaka not really. All the newer ships begin with an 8. Titan is 80102. Daxs ship the Aventine is 82602. It just fits in the current continuity.

Also another point made is that only Hero ships like Enterprise and Voyager are earn a continuation registry (A,B,C...). The Stargazer isnt considered a hero ship but them tacking the current generation incorporating the original registration number is nice.

Hope they at least refitted the ship with actual tech level. Otherwise it would be like ww1 british matylda tank, trying to fight abramses, armatas and black hawks... slower both sublight and warp, weaker shields and weapons, less capable sensors, further limiting the weapons range down, less modern amenities (no holodeck, no replikator -or one of first replikators ever)...
