Data's final scene in the Picard series is an emotional one and one that he deserved. Data asks picard for one final favour, a promise that when Picard leaves he will delete Data's conscious so he can die peacefully.

This does nothing for me. Data’s moment of becoming human was in his ultimate sacrifice for his friend in Nemesis
@ChronoCritic
@ChronoCritic 9 ай бұрын
I took it similar, but also this: Data's death in Nemesis should have been final, but Maddox forced Data's continued existence into something similar to a comatose state using what Data left behind in B-4. This Data, with neither a voice of his own nor a body with which to act out his will, asked his friend to let him go. Imagine dying of brain cancer, but then what was left of you was forced into a vegetative state for 20 years, and all that time past your own death you were aware of your existence, but could do nothing. Data asked to be left to rest, that his time had already passed. Picard let his friend finally rest.

How poorly the writers anticipated the fan base’s reaction to this season. We mourned and disliked Data’s sudden death in Nemesis and for 15 years, his journey felt cut short for many of us. This scene did nothing to satisfy those misgivings, even though it was poignant and emotional. But beyond that, seeing Data stuck in a little personal world and wanting to die.. not what we expected. Worst of all, Picard season 1’s trailer leaned on repeatedly showing Data which got our hopes up for his return.

If all his life Data wanted a child, and they literally have the skills to make him a perfect new body that's as humanlike as he could want, why did he choose to let his consciousness be deleted instead of coming back to his daughter? I know IRL Brett Spinner felt he was too old to continue playing Data, and he probably had other reasons not to reprise the role. But after Lal, after everything, it just feels wrong.
@kuanged
@kuanged 2 жыл бұрын
This is more believable. It is consistent as a "Data move". Having Data die also gives meaning and value to his life. More importantly to the audience it protects Data's legacy, the things we love about him. It makes his life a completed story with a happy, if not bittersweet, ending. If he lived on in a new body the writers would need to create new character arcs for him, which as George Lucas has often proven, can ruin the appeal of great characters.

I had the same complaint, despite the fact that I loved this bittersweet ending. If we had to justify it, my guess is that Maddox and Soong were in the process of building a new body for Data, but Data refused, as he did not want any special treatment over the living and would never have wanted to be brought back online in the first place. However, Maddox and Soong probably refused his requests to be taken offline, so Data reluctantly agreed to live in the simulation. Once Picard arrived in the simulation, Data realized his friend would ensure that his final wish would be carried out. It would have been nice to have a scene where Soji got to meet Data, but I like to think that she did finally get to meet him in a way (however briefly) as Soong, Agnes, and she were transferring Picard's consciousness into the simulation. He also might have wanted to stay alive long enough to get to the bottom of the conspiracy behind the synth ban. When Picard arrived, he knew his work was complete.

Well there was a couple of take away from this, first is that Picard died. The soul of Picard came back to usher his friend away. THe Picard we see now is a souless machine. Data has a soul which is unique for him and only him. Second- Bruce Maddox is a monster, no wonder Jurati got pardon for his death. Pretty much he secretly held onto Data neuro and did not tell the Federation. From that Neuron of Data he was able to reconstruct data and then examine him to his heart content. That is why the Federation suddenly had a influx of smart AI that had suspicious gold skin like Data. Its cause Bruce was able to study the captured data all these years that allow him to grow in leap and bounds. Data capture was so he wanted to die a free man.

Data's actor had wanted to retire the character for a long time. He was a bit tired of playing Data, and also felt that he was aging too much for the makeup to hide any longer. So, there's that and this being good timing for a final death. To answer your questions, Data was reconstructed by Bruce Maddox (the guy in "Measure of a Man" who tried to legally challenge Data's right to choose his own future) in terms of consciousness, not body. He existed in a simulated world, within that little machine. That's why he ultimately wanted to go, to leave on his own terms rather than as something Maddox stole.

Not this nonsense. Borg can breath in space because there don't need to. An the fuck how clean is this borg ship? That is not how there are supposed to look like. Amazon, I hope youre happy now. You destroyed Roddenberrys dream of a better further for what? Money? Quotes? Yes, humanity has corruption. But you are the reason. Not people who give there best to make it real, to make humanity better.

Why wouldn’t Alton (Soong's supposed biological son) not want to interact with the famous Data? Or vice versa? I mean, that's a huge opportunity in writing, and what is the point of Picard having a body transfer?? I mean, WHY create that specific plot? ... something, something synthetics and humanity's future? And if one had done such a thing, of course they'd bloody want to be young and have "super powers". Lol. I mean, if you're doing it at 94...why not go for gold??

So why does Mr Data have to be put to sleep? Stupid ending

Because he wants to. Data always wanted to be human, have a human experience. Dying is part of that.

@@noabsolutelynot3660 Quoting Data from the TNG episode "The Measure of a Man." "I am the culmination of one man's dream. This is not ego or vanity, but when Doctor Soong created me, he added to the substance of the universe. If, by your experiments, I am destroyed, something unique - something wonderful - will be lost. I cannot permit that. I must protect his dream." That is Data as a character. And this "show" butchers the very essence of everything Trek, including the Federation, Picard and Data.

@@aurex8937 If you hadn't noticed, in this scenario data is no longer unique. There is now a race of him, as was discussed in Measure of a Man. So him being comfortable with death in this scenario holds with the information you present.

@@noabsolutelynot3660 So, an individual is no longer precious and unique if there are others of his kin? And, speaking of Measure of a Man. Do you think it's believable or acceptable that, even after Picard helped define androids' rights, they ended up used as slave labor?

@@MarxistKnight disagree. You say that until you face death and realize just how much you have to lose. Everyone who's jumped and lived to tell the tale has always said that they regretted it in the air.
