It's similar to the moment in Discovery where the characters refuse to annihilate the Klingons. Starfleet doesn't exist in reality, but it does exist as an idea where we can project the best of ourselves. Never cared for Riker's character, but this moment gives me chills every time.

@Bitchslapper316 4 жыл бұрын
@@Zachomara Honestly I don't think the Romulans have been as advanced as the federation with star ship tech for a long time. As impressive as the D'deridex-class was, it was built entirely as a war ship and took a great deal of resources. We see only really see it matched up to the enterprise-D. The enterprise-D was formidable but it was still designed as an exploration cruiser. Later In Voyager we see three of them pitted against three starfleet ships designed specifically for combat, two escort (defiant class) and one light cruiser (akira class) and they weren't even close to a match for them. We also see how the D'deridex-class successor held up to the scimitar compared to the sovereign class which was a heavy cruiser and designed with combat in mind. I think the moment star fleet started focusing on designing ships with heavy combat in mind and churning out warships in big numbers the Romulans lost any edge they had in the past.

@@scottxavier , LOL! That's not how Starfleet works. That's hilarious though. Mars shipyards we're destroyed. Did you think that's the Federation's only shipyard? What about Utopia Planatia at Earth (the Federation's largest shipyard by far)? Or the Lunar shipyards. Or, Vulcan (unless this is in the Kelvin timeline). Or, Andoria. Or one of the hundreds of other shipyards around the Federation. One shipyard was destroyed. This shipyard was building the fleet to save Romulus (what a stupid premise. Romulans don't have ships?). And that's it. Losing that shipyard would not cause so much disruption that every ship built after was one design. And, as others have said, what happened to the rest of the fleet? Did all those ships just disappear when the Mars shipyard was destroyed? Budget. That's what happened. CBS ran out of money to fund this failure of a show.

I bet Starfleet had that future AGT future Galaxy idea on the drawing board even during the time of TNG so who's to say that they weren't going to refit all future Galaxy class ships whether the events of that AGT future happened or not?

I love this scene, and all...but would it had killed someone to tell Riker “Hey your best friend, and old captain is at death’s door?” I think Picards death would’ve been...a lot more sentimental if he had people of his own crew, his own family; with him while he died...not people he just met that barely give a shit about him, that barely have developed with him. For that, I feel pissed at his new “crew” no one had enough brain cells to say “HEY! CAPTAIN RIKER HE NEEDS YOU” In my own feeling, Picard died alone, with people he didn’t know, near a borg cube; how sad for his character..

@Leo Peridot Honestly I preferred Sisko, not that Picard was bad, it just that Sisko was more relatable, a good man trying to do the tried thing but just as flawed as the rest of us and he bended Starfleet rules more. While Picard, was more stoic, less inclined to show emotions always acting as the ideal Starfleet captain
@Lightingwarrior
@Lightingwarrior 4 жыл бұрын
@Leo Peridot As I stated before I liked Sisko more because he was more human more real, being he was a good man at heart but just as flawed as the rest of us, meaning he struggles trying to stay a good man but is forced to do difficult things. As for the Maquis, to be honest I found the Federation's war with them completely hypocritical and arrogant, regardless of what tactics they used. The Federation caused this entire mess, with the way they ended the Cardassian War and enforced "their" peace on the colonies. Sisko said it best, "It's easy to be a saint in Paradise, but the Maquis don't live in Paradise out there, there are no saint, just people scared, angry, determined people who are determined to survive whether it meets with the Federations approval or not." They were so out of touch with their own people that they didn't realise the mess they created until it was too late and they were so desperate to keep that peace they were willing to betray their own people to get it by handing over several of their own worlds without consideration of the colonists and turning a blind eye to Cardassian abuse. Picard and a lot of other Starfleet I found were far too stiff and unrealistic, (most of the times), I mean humans will never be that perfect, which is why I struggle with Roddenberry's original view since I found it too idealistic and naïve, where he generally portrayed humans as near perfect and always good.
@Lightingwarrior
@Lightingwarrior 4 жыл бұрын
@Leo Peridot Not all societies, if you look at History you see that just as many fall apart after catastrophic war, due to internal problems caused by the war. I'm not saying aspiring to a better future is wrong, I just saying that portraying every person to be the same almost perfect person is naïve and idealisti. Humanity is slow to change, there will always be things like greed, bigotry, arrogance, cruelty and so on you can't eliminate those traits. They are a part of our nature just as much as Kindness, Compassion, Humility, Bravery and Understanding are. That is why I think Babylon 5 storyline and world are better. They show both the good and the bad of Humanity and other race, no one people, especially Human are perfect, and we see a lot of fault on all sides, yet they try to built a better world

I recently finished Patrick Stewarts Autobiography. It was a fantastic and interesting read but it really changed my opinion of the man. Apart from revealing him to be a lecherous old adulterer with a penchant for younger women there was a curious section where he talks about his demands for agreeing to reprise the titular role on Picard. It made me understand why season 1 and 2 were so bad when I learned how he so adamantly fought against the producers when it bringing the old crew members and starships. Only making concessions for Spiner, Frakes and Sirtis as long asthey were limited to short cameos. He relented on season 3 and we all saw the massive difference that made.

The struggles of 21st century Earth that once horrified Kirk, Bones, Janeway and Tuvok have returned - poverty, famine, drug addiction, violent crime, mental health issues, late stage capitalism - it's now rife all over the galaxy. I would say for different circumstances. Are you sterilizing a settlement, a town, a city, a continent, or all landmass on the face of an entire planet? Are you wanting to bring down a mountain on an extensive cave system? I expect they have to do with fire pattern spacing and frequency and types of weapons used.

If the movie history of star trek told us trekkies one thing, it's that the coolness of a space battle is inversely proportional to the number of vessels involved.
@paristo
@paristo 2 жыл бұрын
I agree, less is more. There is nothing cooler than having a two vessels chasing each others, where the winner is defined by the one who has greater wit and tactical sense. (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan kzbin.info/www/bejne/jXTTiqSNdq6qfKM). It has never been about speed, never been about the amount of ships, never been about the weapons power, and never been about anything else than the two captains challenging each others with all the time and skill they have put to their crews to perform in the emergency situations. Just like at the sea, it is captain vs captain. Not technology vs technology. This is something that so many movies fail, where they try to fill the void of great actors and scenes with just special effects, visual effects and "larger of something". Only to leave the characters shadowed by distractions and all other non-important factors.

I still fondly recall the days, when D'deridexs and Valdores showed the true praetorian glory of the Romulan Star Empire, and the Federation had a number of superbly designed vessels that comprised its fleet, grounded in lore and well designed layouts. When a true fan could name the class of each Enterprise, and we all marvelled at the spectacular and well planned battles of the TNG & DS9 eras. Now those days are long gone, replaced by the senseless violence, laser blast, starfighter and explosion fraught space battles, braindead dialogue, swears, hoplessness, endless lens flares, and bridge windows of the JJ and Kurtzman abominations.

Your probably looking back with rose tinted glasses. In the past star fleet would strap phasers and shields to exploration, science and medical vessels, send them into battle and hope for the best. It looks like they finally took some hints from the Klingons, Romulans and the dominion and mass produced combat ships.
@blazer2123

Thats not the issue that I was commenting on though. My issue is with the lack of care and effort put into the thought and design work of new Star Trek ships and technology, compared to the great series of the TNG era and TOS. Also, as a side note, the Akira, Steamrunner, Prometheus, Defiant, and Sovereign classes were all fine warfaring vessels, with an excellent level of detail put into their design.
