This was a loss that felt real in Star Trek. An honorable, yet heart-wrenching conclusion to her character.
@davidmacy411

Its easy to assume she is dead, but there is a saying in this biz: never assume someone is dead unless you see the body (even then they always seem to find ways around it for some characters). I dont think it was coincidence that the viewscreen was turned off before the actual blast. We have seen transporters with much longer range than Starfleet, namely the Dominion. She may not be dead, but for now must assume she is of course.

@@davidmacy411 Terry Matalas said in an interview that there was a possibility at the end of season 3. They considered to have a scene where the crew of the Enterprise and the Titan would beam aboard the Intrepid to free the prisoners from the Changelings, among them Ro Laren and Tuvok. However, they didn't do it in the end, officially for budget reasons but as said before, Ro Laren's appearance and death would've been less of an impact for Picard.

This scene refers back to other tragic moments throughout _The Next Generation_ storyline and highlights how Picard appreciates his family uniquely. One of them was in _Generations,_ when he learned his brother Robert and nephew Rene died in a fire. Another happens to be when he unknowingly told his son Jack how Starfleet was the only family he had ever needed. I agree with one other comment here that he is also heartbroken and devastated at losing people who had served under him, like Tasha Yar, Data, and now Ro Laren.

Michelle Forbes has did it again. Playing a strong charismatic sci-fi character who are intelligent with tough, no-nonsense persona However, her characters tragically perished soon after they have made their impression on us. She did it at "Battlestar Gallactica" as Admiral Cain and now she does it again in "Picard" as Ro Laren. 😥

The difference, this time, is that she originally appeared in ST:TNG and was a Protege of Picard until she betrayed him and quit Starfleet for what she believed was the right cause-the Maquis. Which later blew up in her face when the Dominion War started and they wiped out the Maquis. Guess Ro was one of the lucky one's... She would have been charged with Treason for what she did, mind. I would love to know how she managed to make Commander, what, 25-30 years later?

There have been many deaths in Star Trek over the previous 60 years, but this was one of the saddest deaths we’ve had in a long time. Seeing a longtime fan favorite who’s fate has been up in the air for nearly 30 years and to see her go out this way was devastating. Data died, Hemmer died, Hugh died, but Ro’s death is the saddest death since Jadzia in “Tears of the Prophets.”

What is so poignant about having Ro in season 3 is that this entire season is about parenting and Jean Luc's experiences with children figures in his life. Not only was Ro's inclusion a way to wrap up a very interesting storyline, but thematically it was consistent and important to explore and finish up Picard's first experience as a father figure. His sense of betrayal was so deep because whether he knew it or not, he saw Ro as a child he sought to guide. Their conversation at the bar was so carefully structured to sound just like any conversation a grown child would have with their estranged parent. Beautifully done by the writing team and perfectly executed by Stewart and Forbes.

i have to admit, watching Star Trek Picard, and seeing Commander Ro's death, after knowing her back story, and seeing her sacrifice her self for something so deep and meaningful in the TNG and Picard actually hurt. this is one of those deaths you wont forget, not because of the maner of her death, but because of the willing full sacrifice to try and save Star-fleet and make Picard and the others on the titan aware of the depth of the problem with her bajoran earing. this scene was expertly acted out by both Patrick Stewart and Michelle Forbes.

In the books Ro has always been a interesting character. She's always been angry, rash, directed by the right thing to do in her own way which is the non Picard way. Non realistically speaking the burden that Picard and Ro have had must of been huge internally. They both obtain similar goals but have a big difference in how they obtain that. Glad to see it unfold the right away and a deep respect and probably Father Daughter love expressed at the end. For those that don't know Ro missed out on the Cardassian Occupation she was off world. She never got to fight for her people's freedom. That greatly impacted her since the people who fought are still alive. She joined the Maquis because well she was not favored in Starfleet and the fight she has inside still was present. Maquis were given amnesty to fight the Dominion. Thats how she reentered Starfleet. Amnesty expunged her record. In the books you get a impression that years upon years later she strived to gain Picard's forgiveness and respect. Its actually the driving component of her character. I glad they honored her she went out with a bang and Picard finally see's the person she always has been.

It is very rare that a drama show (much less a sci-fi adventure series) has a main cast of women that are ALL over the age of 50 and provides them an opportunity to play a key role in the unfolding story but that's the case in the third season of "Picard". Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis, Michelle Hurd, Jeri Ryan and Michelle Forbes are veterans who have all been in the business for more than 30+ years and they have each been given a chance to shine and show not only their talents but that older actresses can still play a notable role worthy of their skills.

It was a well acted scene that did it's job to cause grief stricken emotions and proved that even in Star Trek no one is safe especially with an infernal invasion. BUT then there's a catch, if Terry Matalis and Michelle Forbes have an agreement, we could see Ro Laren come back. Between the time communications to the shuttle was lost and when it hit the Buzzard Collector, l counted at least 4 seconds. Which means there was a window of opportunities to beam Ro Laren off the shuttle by a cloaked Section 31 ship. There's no way Ro Laren returned to Starfleet Intelligence as an Admiral if she didn't get acquired by Section 31 and did various covert jobs all those years to prove her loyalty. If Ro Laren makes a return to Star Trek Legacy, l believe this would be the storyline they could go with. It's basically the classic backdoor entry of a character to make a return if needed.

Admiral Picard was the father figure, Captain Riker was the former one night stand to Commander Ro. Captain Shaw was just realizing it is all true. 😮

UPDATE: Terry Matalas just announced this good news about Ro Laren's fate on his AMA earlier today: "Ro Laren was supposed to return… she had been beamed off the shuttle and held for information by the Changelings." So Ro Laren lives. Hopefully we'd see her again in the forthcoming S31 movie 🙏

She may not actually be dead. It was originally written for us to later find out that she was transported out by the changlings, and held captive, but the scene was not able to be filmed due to her scheduling issues.

What? She was my favorite in TNG. Why does Ro always leave us! They did mention that they could beam her off if she got close. Maybe the Intrepid grabbed her instead. Fingers crossed.

I agree, Ro is awesome. Kira Nerys and B'elanna Torres were created because Michelle Forbes twice turned down the chance to return as Ro in both DS9 and Voyager.

This is the TNG reunion we wanted, dealing with a DS9 problem, coupled with some help from Voyager in the form of Seven. I’m hoping that if, and when a really big ship sequence occurs later in the season, we see a bit of help from Seven’s friends in the Fleet.

I cried over this. I've seen all of TNG when it aired, and back then, Ro kinda annoyed me a little. Looking back, I was SO wrong. Michelle Forbes is an exquisite actress, and the death of Ro, although very - very! - saddening, was one the most meaningful I have EVER witnessed in any story. Relevant, powerful, fullfilling. Terry is a genius! I hope he'll be back on Star Trek soon.
