Picking up an old E46 BMW Engine- When things don't go to plan.

This week, on "Project BMW: Jekyll & Hyde": I go to pick up my new (old) M54b30 motor for the Time Attack car. Things don't go to plan, stuff breaks, but at least I now have an engine! Valve cover gasket, Vanos, and spark plugs get done!

I'm so glad I'm watching your videos, I have an E46 myself. A 325 four-door. These are so helpful. You've semi convince me to keep my 325 engine, rather than upgrading to a 330 engine. I'm going to cut off my muffler and add cold air induction. That's my next project on the car.

Female locknut keys are dumb, but the male type (i think BMW offered them factory?) are good. No issues. I went to do a simple front strut job on the E39 - now on day two. Everything that could go wrong has. Spring compressor kits are a joke, and dont work on E39 front springs, as the spring is rounded in profile. I'm honestly thinking of making this my last DIY major repair. It's not worth the pain anymore. Oh and your snow looks like heaven - it 100 deg F here every day. I sweat litres when working on car.

Looks like you forgot to add rtv to the rear camshaft half moons! That spot is a common leak

Hey i have a E46 330ci ..my engine fan has blone out twice already even though I got new motor mounts do you know what might be causing this ? Please help I don't want to get rid of it

I suggest, if you are not violating race rules, replace the stock ccv system with ecs tuning baffled catch can for longevity and ease of service, and clutch fan delete. do you need to retain the heater core? if not remove with the heater core pump.

Catch can and fan delete are happening but heater core stays. Need for defogging

Dont forget to add a new thermostat and a new oil filter housing gasket while you are at it. :-)

Not sure if you already know this, but fairly aggressive heat gun action will turn those gaskets back into a pliable rubber again (temporarily). Obviously make sure to keep moving the heat around as to not damage the plastic valve cover. Might need to use a pick (hook shape is best) to grab lift the gasket away if you have sensitive fingers, as it gets pretty hot. A lot easier than having to break the hardened rubber into tiny+sharp chunks. Again not sure if you already knew this as the rest of the gasket material magically disappeared off camera :p

haha yes totally understood! I get that you don't want/need to include every little detail of these jobs, and that could become time consuming in itself. Just hoping to save you some time down the line incase you didn't already know that tidbit, though I'm guessing you probably did lol

hey while ur doing the oil pan you should def safety wire the oil pump sprocket nut since ur gonna be at the track as u already know it has a tendency to back off while at sustained high RPM's.

If he is doing track time I would recommend the vac pump because the shaft can shear but this is reinforced and it has 4 bolts not 1 nut!

I believe he mentioned that he's considering upgrading to an aftermarket oil pump in this video.. I agree with both of the previous comments though. An upgraded oil pump is great preventative maintenance/upgrade, if one can afford it. And yes the oil pump sprocket nut has had a history of backing off in certain rare incidences, but i've never heard of it being common to happen, even on track cars. But for the price of what the replacement safety-wire nut cost, and since you're already doing an oil pan gasket, you may as well do it.

You should pressure wash it or steam clean it before doing anything else, and replace the oil pan gasket. That's an annoying one otherwise.

Why dont you put the other 330 engine in the track car, cuz the drift car isnt ready, plus it is in great shape and it haz headers
