pulling out the phone with how to drive stick shift tutorial while on the road is wild

Now that we know the clutch was basically dead, it's mega super impressive you were able to teach yourself to drive manual! Tip: quickly double-tap the accelerator then gently press to go forward on a hill. Works great, sounds cool. 👍

It’s mega impressive how quickly you picked it up. I can’t believe you just jumped onto the road immediately 😂 I learned how to drive in a manual and I was driving around in parking lots for like a month before I went on the road! I just couldn’t understand it for the life of me until one day it clicked. I currently drive a manual and I’m very grateful that my dad sat through all of that to teach me 😂

Got a GT86 2 months ago and the first thing I noticed on this car is how different the clutch of every car is. When I have to drive the car of my mom, the clutch is totally different and its like relearning everything again. Never drove a car with automatic. GT86 is an awesome car as it teaches you how to drive since you have to do everything manually. Have fun and drive it a lot!

Sounds like my experience getting a manual car. Drove from SoCal to Arizona to buy it, not knowing how to learn stick, and then drove back and learned after having gotten the car.

For hill starts, use the handbrake to keep you from rolling back, then use your feet as normal. Just make sure you hold the brake button.

This can help but I wouldn’t rely on it incase you are driving a newer car with a parking brake button and not a lever

Taught myself 3 yrs ago, using KZbin videos. My truck doesn’t have a hand brake so hills were scary. I learned to right foot brake , in gear , come up from clutch until you hear or see the rpm drop, you are grabbing at that point , off brake and go. Just in your driveway, learn your bite point, come off the clutch until it almost stalls

I can't drive cars, but I can tell when to shift a manual car based purely on the sound of the engine alone. Just because my dad drove a manual car and I remember the sounds. I was in a friends car which was also a manual and could tell he was shifting at the last second /just waiting too long to shift despite it being a completely different car and different company. I mentioned it to him and he admitted to it too for extra confirmation lol It sounds like you could be doing the same but honestly it is too hard to tell from the video alone. It is so much easier to tell in person

I just got a GR Corolla as a first manual car, and been practicing it for 3 days now. Glad I can relate lol. I think from the sound of your car, you might be revving it way too high and releasing the clutch too slow. However, giving it some gas is good (~1500 RPM) then slowly releasing the clutch does let you go off faster. I try to not rely on letting the car just roll off the clutch without gas because that's not fast enough in real traffic.

i have driven sticks for all my life learned on a c6 corvette lol. you are doing great for a first timer, much respect! . it gets smoother as you learn. riding motorcycles helps learn faster but basically just feel the clutch as honey. as it seems like its turning thicker; you give it more gas as you hold the clutch petal in the honey. you will get it. lol. but yeah less gas petal, more clutch control. its like a dance. both must work together. once it clicks in your head it will require no thinking. good luck mr reptile man! 😅 when shifting let the clutch out all the way before getting back on the go petal. love your content man! also rip Brian Barczyk! he got me into snakes and is the reason i found your content.

I learned how to drive standard on my dad and stepmom's old Subaru Impreza. It was so nerve wrecking learning and they we're in the car with me. I can't imagine not knowing how to drive standard and having to drive the car alone. I was nervous as hell the first time I drove the Impreza alone and I had learned enough that I knew how to drive the car. I just had to keep practicing to get better. I have since owned a few standard vehicles of my own and I love driving standard. I own a 6 speed 2023 Subaru WRX now and it's a blast to drive. I love it. How is the BRZ now? You still liking it? My dad and stepmom have a 2023 BRZ that they bought just a few days after I bought my WRX (their BRZ is also standard) and I drove theirs and it's really nice. I really like it. Don't like the rev hang in it though (thankfully, my WRX has none as Subaru fixed that issue for the newer WRX's) and I have almost zero room in the car as I'm 6'2. Lol. I do enjoy it when I drive it though.

nice. yeah ideally just make sure the car is parked somewhere you can practice a bit first, like a parking lot. so long as you watch some tutorials before, and maybe pull one up as you're in it - you'll very likely have minimal issue. it's really exciting :D

We all start somewhere lol. Makes me so glad when I got my 9th gen civic Si it had just gotten a new clutch roughly 10k miles ago lol. First manual car, not the first manual I've driven. I drove manual semi trucks (unsynced transmissions) and I drove sim rig, and older manuals from friends before. But this is my first manual I owned, and it's a great car and luckily I also picked up how to drive it pretty quickly. My 9th gen likes to lock me out of 6th gear occasionally though, and if you don't come to a complete stop, even barley rolling to go into reverse it will ALWAYS grind. I got brand new acuity shift bushings, but I think some more acuity parts for the shift linkage will help smoothen out the shifting too, I don't mind the stock throws but someday I plan to get a short shifter too.

👍 👍 👍Here's some of G_d. Bennett's tips for new manual drivers. G_d got a black fk8 as his 1st manual, and within a short while he did a few competitive 1/4 mile races, doing 14.0s 1st day's attempt on worn patched triangle tyres and normal 90 gas. stock fk8. (That's around 0.3s from an ideally conditioned fk8 that would have fresh continentals) 1. Never downshift from 2 to 1. 2. To help avoid stalls or just doing good shifts; look at the gauge, and ensure rpms are at least 1k before moving off. Eventually, you won't need to look at the gauge. You'll use the sound of the car to get good shifts in. (It should be like music, Gear 1 (clutch down, tiny pause in exhaust note) Gear 2 and so on. The clutch is simply there to facilitate you to go to any gear, be it 1st or reverse. You normally go to neutral 1st, then to any gear you want; however from 1+ gear to R, you have to come to a complete stop before attempting R, but from 1 to 2, obviously you don't have to stop because you want to go forward. 3. Keep practicing by shifting up to 3. (Leave 4 to 6 out for now) 4. On flat surfaces, the clutch can be all the way down to go into any gear. On inclined surfaces (where you roll forward or back depending) don't hold the clutch down all the way, instead lift foot to around half an apple's height while working with brake to see if you're rolling. If you don't roll means you've found the bite point and you're ready to move forward or backward depending on if you want to reverse or go forward.
