I played in a band about 40 years ago and I played rhythm guitar and that's all I was able to do. I stopped playing for 25 years after I had played for 15 years and decided to start back in to learning theory and some lead. I'm 67 years old now but really find a lot of joy getting back into music. I wish I would have found this video sooner but I'm very excited to start practicing with you. Thank you so much. I truly appreciate this. All my love to all of you Bill.

I'm only 5 minutes into the video, but I just wanted to say thank you for putting in the split screen view of the guitarist's PoV! It's always been frustrating for me to sit with a teacher and watch them play, and then in my head try to flip upside down when they just did while I try to repeat it.

A brilliant explanation of how CAGED works while at the same time teaching the fretboard. I think this video is destined to become one of the best resources on KZbin for CAGED and the fretboard. as a student of this...id just like to say im going to go through this video for the next couple of months a number of times and each time im going to focus on one chord...Im starting with C...playing C up and down the neck with proper technique until it's really easy and natural feeling and sounding. Then I'll choose another chord and repeat the practice after ive watch the whole video. Playing C past the 12 fret is really tricky, especially if you want a perfect sound tone...This instruction vid is really good...

@pattheitguy 11 ай бұрын
@@jamalpress i think like this: Level 0: What is a guitar? Level 1: What are the parts? How to clean, new strings, tune, take care of? When to do the above? Level 2: What is music? Are the keys on the piano the same as frets? Wow! There are 12! Level 3: How do I play every note on the first 5 frets from highest to lowest and back? Am I putting my finger tip in the right spot? Do I HAVE to use all 4 fingers? Level 4: How to play the chords (open) that match the 12 above, using the first 5 frets? Level 5: How to play them in frets 1-12 (i.e. not "open")? Level 6: How to strum all those chords? What is "rhythm"? Am i holding my fingers/pick right? Level 7: Enough theory! Can't you show me even a basic song that uses these chords I just learned? Not happy birthday! 🎂 Level 8: What are these different "tabs" things? Oh! That makes things MUCH easier! Level 9: What is a "scale"? Wait, you mean everything I've done is easier on my brain if I just know scales? Scales vs. sheet music vs. tabs... It's all the same! Level 10: Scales on the neck are really just the notes of a chord? I can play a scale anywhere! Level 11: Why are some scales different lengths, and why is there a blues scale? What scales do my favorite songs use (i.e. what scale(s) are they "in")? Level 12: So guitar solos are really just scales? Seriously? Level 13: How can I do on my guitar what I do on (another) favorite instrument (includes singing)? So sheet music is universal? Level 14: How can I play along with songs? I mean, how can I tell what key is in? Can I do this for songs I've never heard before? Level 15: What is this magical "shredding" you speak of? EVERY level above has an assumed step under it that says: Why do you keep saying, "You'll know" when I ask how much practicing the above step requires? My suggestion is to practice that step so much that you feel confident that you could make a video explaining after somebody else. "To understand, teach." This is no official scale, just some levels I made up off the top of my head to help you get an idea.

I came here already familiar with the CAGED system and the way they connect the fretboard but I never really dug in and practiced it in the way it was explained in this video. Practicing it is boring and I have a tendency to skip the boring parts and jump into a song which is one of the reasons I am not improving as a player. Just because I was familiar with CAGED didn't mean I really knew it. This lesson helped me more than I thought it would. The one area where I struggle the most is the D shape. He taught me on a Strat turned upside down. He bought me my first LH when he was satisfied i was going to stick it out. God rest his soul. I expect he's laughing in his Grave at the fact i inherited a fantastic collection of vintage Guitars that are all right hand orientated and i'm a bloody Southpaw. Thank you! There are a *ton* of CAGED videos available, with widely varying levels of utility, and I feel like I've watched most of them. However, until now none of them really seemed to click with me and provide any insights into the *point* of the system. There is so much here that pulled back a curtain for me, I can't begin to list all the elements and won't try. I will just say that the procession of concrete exercises caused some light bulbs to go off and I'm profoundly grateful to Molly for taking the time to lay this all out. For form and content, I haven't found anything else that comes close to this one.

Excellent lesson. I’ve been playing since I was 14, self taught. The CAGED system is a game changer. It would have been great to have a teacher like you. You are phenomenally good at explaining and creating visually compelling instruction.

I would say it is one and half hour well spent. Something that can take you months to master, she built that in your mind in 90+ minutes. Now I can pick up the guitar and be able trace the notes with speed, and play C-chord in all shapes (ok, not G) . Thanks Molly for the great course.

Note to self: In all shapes, know each instance of the root. Day 1: C-shape @0:43 @6:39 Day 2: A-shape @14:44 @19:25 Day 3: G-shape @29:40 @33:30

The main ones most players use is the E and A shape. The rest of them are difficult and at that point you are into just playing a portion of the strings. With E and A shapes you can play bar chords all the way up the neck. Keep in mind all the chords of E and A also work. For example the for the bar chord Am is just like Em at the nut. Same with 7th minor 7th ect.

This video popped into my suggested and I have to say I am impressed with this learning technique. I have been playing for over 20 years I have never taught professionally but I used to volunteer teach at a summer day camp. I really like the way you emphasize finding the roots while using the caged system. This builds up strength and coordination as well as sets up proper hand position for playing the major and minor pentatonic scales. I also think it’s great how you keep the students grounded to learning the fretboard . Excellent lessons for anyone wanting to learn.
