As a Ford technician I recommend the same posture. As I tell all of my friends and anyone who will listen. Not going to have family upset with my recommendation. and learning Transmissions have been around for 20 years. The sad part is that Ford can't get it right because they rush it to Market before it's sufficiently tested. Ford trucks come off the carrier to the dealership requiring updates on 10 to 15 modules. NoT ACCEPTABLE. Make it. Test it.. customers are not and should not be the guinea pigs when they're spending 62 to$90,000 on a truck

For the past 37 years I’ve been buying brand new trucks every 3-4 years and aside of my LandCruisers this ford has been extremely reliable and very easy to add aftermarket updates like a lift and engine work with zero issues so I don’t need luck cause I bought a Ford. No disrespect but that’s the government talking and don’t think you like the government pushed mandates do you as they’re going after the automobile makers herd right now as Ford has been fighting against their mandates which is why you can still find a new V8 ford without cylinder deactivation or auto stop so how about looking up how out of the ten top most reliable vehicles Ford F150 5.0 was the most reliable vehicle many years in a row, the nine others were all Toyotas. There’s always a lemon in a bunch and unfortunately there are many more in every manufacturer. Just bought my wife a new Yukon Denali and that POS has been in the shop every month. So, I’d only speak with actual Ford F150 owners and not these government supported companies

Have a 2021 F150 5.0. It has been absolutely flawless since purchase. I now have 43000 miles on it and it has been used regularly to haul 6-9,000lbs. It's smooth, comfortable, and does everything I need it to. Coming from a 2018 that treated me the same until it was totaled; I can't complain. I've driven the rams and the Chevys, the ram has a nicer ride but I didn't like the interior as much, the chevy felt underpowered and heavy. That's my opinion, everyone is entitled to their own and I'd never judge. But I'm personally very pleased with my F150.

According to Consumer Reports, there are NO "full sized" pick-ups of ANY brand on their list of MOST reliable list ('12-'21). You must be one of the LUCKY ones to get an F150 that was NOT built on a Mon or Fri! Btw, the '17, '18 F150 IS on their "WORST USED CARS/TRUCKS" to buy list. HAPPY MOTORING!
@mattweeks2272

@@TheOzthewiz I’m well aware lol. When my friends are shopping I steer them away from 17 F150s with the 10spd and I steer them away from 18 F150s in general. I was definitely a lucky one with mine. However, I will also say that any vehicle will last with proper maintenance. My 18 5.0 never had transmission issues, but it did have the preignition issue and it showed signs of oil consumption. But keeping the oil change intervals at 3000mi, it was never below its full mark by more than maybe 1/2 a quart. The preignition was mitigated when I started running it on 93 octane fuel. Doing those two things kept the truck running flawlessly. My 21 doesn’t have any preignition issues or oil consumption issues. But I still keep the oil change interval at 3000mi. I own another vehicle too that is not known for reliability. A 2005 ford Explorer. Their transmissions are absolutely abysmal and if you have the 4.0 (I have the 4.6 2v) you will have timing chain issues along with thermostat housing problems. I’m currently at 220k miles on it and it runs/drives like a dream and it’s never left me stuck on the side of the road. It’s also never given me a check engine light. But again, I’m ridiculous when it comes to preventative maintenance.

A friend bought a new 21 F150 with the 5.0. He has been a lifelong Ford guy. The engine valvetrain had a catastrophic failure and it sat at the dealership for six months waiting for a new engine. He has had the truck back for some time now. He said he does not like the transmission and it sometimes clunks badly when shifting. It has been reprogrammed and still shifts badly. I know the pickup market is very competitive and manufacturers are constantly making changes and improvements. I believe some of these constant changes result in reliability issues. The bottom line is new pickups are way too expensive and are experiencing declining reliability.

Tim, you're correct in that many manufacturers don't properly coat their products for anti-corrosion. I've been in the aerospace helicopter industry as a design engineer for 30 years. The M&P engineers (material and processing) would never let us cheap out on corrosion prevention, in any condition; especially salt water. Nice to see your videos are accurate. Corrosion is a huge part of quality. Dissimilar metals, corrosive catalysts like salt water; it's mechanics of materials 101 ... I guess the car industry just hasn't figured that out yet. Purchased my 2021 STX 4x4 with the 5.0 brand new. My issues: suspension makes a clunking noise when transitioning from flat areas to ramps or dips; adaptive steering does not respond well to uneven roads; left trailer light circuit will shut off randomly; transmission downshifts from 5 to 6 aggressively; driver side door panel creaks; engine will make a popping noise after normal acceleration; door hinges are warped already; interior seats rattle; exhaust system rattles and underside has lots of superficial rust. Positives: very good towing performance, cheap to maintain, very good gas mileage, good visibility and easy to drive. Have 44K on the odometer - plan to keep the tin turkey for towing and buy an older F150 for commuting.

The biggest downside I see is that Ford started using oil pump belts on the 2.7 and 5.0 starting a few years ago and they routed the belt behind the timing chain. It's going to be a big expense if you are the type that keeps a truck for that many miles. Trading it before then dodges the expense but the used market may reflect that big service expense in used truck values.

I could have sworn that the F150 had 'average' reliability according to Consumer Reports just last year? Other than changing the dashboard etc., I didn't think there was much change in 2023, so it would be interesting to see what CR thinks is wrong now. Yes, I know the 5.0 recently got cylinder deactivation. I am having trouble believing that the F150 handles much worse than the competition as well, and who cares if the ride is a quarter of a notch worst than some of the competition? I actually own a new GMC HD, but, even after hearing what CR thinks, I would still consider the F150 if I were in the market for a half-ton. I'll bet JD Power doesn't think the F150 has bad reliability. I will occasionally look at what CR has to say, but I always take it with a grain (or two) of salt.

I bought a 2022 Tundra immediately after they came out since I previously had a 2015 Tundra. I really liked the 22 Tundra, but I wasn't in love with it. Went with the SR5. I found the turbo to have a lot of lag and I never felt like I enjoyed the interior. It made a ton of noise with what felt like cheap plastic and didn't ultimately live up to my expectations of my 2015 Tundra. Toyota sold me on reliability and dependability with my 2015 Tundra and the transfer case imploded with less than 5,000 miles on it. The only reason why I stayed with that truck was because the dealership gave me their platinum warranty for 8yrs/100,000 miles. The truck was reliable after that. Well, I just traded the 2022 Tundra last week in for a Lariat F150 v8 and I absolutely love it. It feels better, more solid, more quiet, more features... and I bought a warranty for it in case it does begin to have issues. I'm a career firefighter and need something reliable and safe. Time will tell and a week isn't enough to give a full review, but so far I really enjoy it and feel "At home" compared to my Tundra. My last thoughts are this... for the average consumer, buy the extended warranty. This is one of the few things I'll buy a warranty on. I've owned all of the brands and they all have their issues. @@Reu_ag You make a fair observation and I see another commenter brought it up as well. When I purchased my SR5, I was very limited in the area I live with what trim level they had in the color I wanted and settled. I drove all of the trims and wanted nicer. With that said, each of the trims to me with the Tundra didn’t have that same premium feel my F150 has. Even the XLT I drove before my Lariat felt like it was smoother and quieter in the cab. The plastic didn’t make a bunch of noise and overall the truck seemed better. With that said, I’m not a brand loyal person. Today I’m in an F150, yesterday I was in a Tundra and tomorrow I might be in a GM. I’ve owned all of them and my entire point of this wasn’t to compare the SR5 to the Lariat, but more so to focus on the point that I’ve felt like each of them have their own issues and nothing is a tank anymore. To wrap it up, I’m certainly aware of the differences between the two trims, but you’d be surprised. The tundra still had plenty of features. Yep I took my 2020 Platinum in today for cam shaft position sensor codes. The repair shop i’ve been going to for years switched them out but engine is still rattling. They told me the timing is messed up and if they were me, they would take it down and trade it in for something else. They said this is a common problem for these models. Also, the repair shop owner had the same truck as me at one point, and it happened to his as well with 37k miles on it. Mine only has 45k on it. Being that you work at a dealership what truck is the best out nowadays ? I’m afraid to go the gm route due to their issues with shaking. I love the 2023 ford limited. I think the issue is when ford went to 10 speed on these 5 liters.

Had a 2022 and put 30k miles on it. Got my 2023 power boost in December of 2023. Truck runs and rides great. The rough transmission random issue in my 2022 is nonexistent as they did finally figure out what was happening to cause it. Handling… my guess is they got a level kit truck which changes how they ride. My truck is smooth as can be. This is a complaint because Ford still uses a solid axle for trucks. Deal with it.

I truely find that the ride and the handling in my 2023 F150 Powerboost are an improvement over the ride and handling of the 2005 F150 that it replaced. As far as reliability goes, my old 2005 F150 proved to be extremely reliable over 18 years of ownership with me. The only problems I have noticed yet with my 2023 F150 Powerboost are related to the audio, where for some unknown reason the Android Bluetooth audio seems to turn off on it's own. But the engine power that it puts out is quite a lot and without straining itself. Oh, and also I have averaged 18.7 mpg's while always using regular unleaded gasoline.

I have a 2018 F-150 XLT 5.0 FX4 purchased new and it's been good. Use synthetic oil and no oil consumption that some reported. The 10 speed transmission has been good unhitched and towing my 7000 pound travel trailer. I do drive easy does it, not pedal to the metal. I bought it because it had what I needed, 36 gallon fuel tank, tow package with controller, 7k payload package, LT tires, nav, dual power seats, bed liner, back up sensors, remote start etc. I couldn't find a Ram 1500 Hemi with what I needed. Only use it for towing and hauling so it's a relatively low mileage truck. Don't have much of a rust issue as I'm in southern Arizona, but a wire brush and black rust-oleum works on minor surface rust on the rear axle. With the crazy prices on new trucks now I will hang on to this one as long as I can. Knock on wood. I check and top up the front and rear axles and the transfer case with Ford spec fluids as they tend to be a tad low from the factory. I did the same thing on my 2013 FX4 (also a very good truck) which was a tad low from the factory as well. Don't expect the dealerships to check these levels on a new or late model truck.

It’s probably not long lasting and reliable but neither is Ford and Ram might be better but the maintenance cost calculations over 10 years is crazy! Toyota is not as great as it once was. I’d say the 2014-21 Toyota Tundra would probably be the best truck to purchase if you want good reliability and longevity with good fit and finish and quality. Otherwise just buy a new truck every few years and they probably won’t break down in that time.

I currently own a 2010 F-150 XLT Crew Cab with the 4.6 V8 engine after my VW Passat R-Line got totaled last year. It was a one owner with 118k miles and conditions were great. Put a set of new Michelin LTX tires and got the alignment done a month after I bought it. For being a 13 year old truck, the ride quality still impresses me. Couple of my friends complimented me on the conditions and ride quality. One of my friends, who drives a 2021 Tundra TRD Pro he purchased new, met with me to have brunch, and he said I want to drive your truck. After we did a little loop around the area we went to eat, he said, this old truck rides better than my Tundra. And he was working at Toyota headquarters. I also owned, well, leased a 2015 Silverado 1500 LT Double Cab with the 5.3 V8 back then. Best truck ever. Never had any unexpected repairs. Just regular maintenance done until about 50K miles. I traded because I was way over the miles for lease. You want your vehicle, in this case truck, to work well, treat it nicely and don’t drive like a jackass. Any vehicle is susceptible to have issues or being a lemon. Do I wish my old 2010 F-150 had some features my Passat had, like the killer Fender Sound System and Sunroof, absolutely. It also has powered multiple stages as i am a musician and sometimes gigs don’t supply power and this truck has been an absolute godsend! No other truck is worth my time to look at

If they are so FLAWLESS, why do the re-calls keep piling up? It seems like Ford is in a race to be the "RECALL KING OF THE HILL" followed by Hyundai/Kia!

I ordered a new 23' F150 3.5 eco boost Lariat last February, received it in late May. Mind you, this truck has 1,150 miles on it. About 4 weeks ago while on a routine drive as I was attempting to pass a car going 45 mph, I hit the accelerator gently and noticed I had lost about half of the engines HP and the check engine light came on immediately, took it to the dealership where I purchased it and they told me that one of the turbo charger shafts was broken in half! A month later, I'm still without my truck (parts on backorder)and I'm thinking seriously about enacting the "lemon law" with Ford. I paid way too much for this vehicle to be having motor problems already. I have been a loyal Ford guy for the last 40 years and for the most part, not many issues.☹

Do the lemon law now! You will regret waiting. It is way past a reasonable amount of time.

@@richardscribben4352 Ford really stepped up to the plate and settled it outside an actual "lemon law" claim. I'm still waiting for my new truck (2024) to be built but they allowed me to drive the Lariat (small per mile fee) until it arrives. Hat's off to Fords RAV team for making my situation right!👍

All brands have issues. All this new tech just gives more shit to break. The materials are getting cheaper and they’re charging more money. My 22 Sierra was hopefully my last vehicle I’ll buy anytime soon.

Toyota is not the be-all end-all. The technology ride handling and economy have never been as good as americantrucks. They only have a slight Edge in reliability, but they're ugly as hell, and RAM is just as reliable

In December, I believe, CR rated the Powerboost F-150 the worst truck you could buy. I don't live or die by CR ratings but I was seriously considering that truck as a tow vehicle. I'm picking up my new Sierra 1500 later today.

Wow, you do know that the GM twins have recently been trashed by CR right? Our ‘22 F150 Powerboost is a fantastic tow vehicle. We absolutely love it. Good luck with your Sierra. I wonder if you talked to actual PB owners as well? I’ve owned lots of Silverados and had good luck with them too.

I hope you got the Duramax if you are towing much, otherwise the Powerboost was a way better choice. You just can’t beat the ecoboost for towing- low rpm, quiet and power for days.

My brother just got the Chevy dealer to buy his 2020 Silverado back under the lemon law. Looked nice but not reliable with trans problems. He just got his check. He is now buying a 2024 Ford Superduty.

Loving my 2023 F-150 STX 4x4 2.7L. Don’t really care what consumer reports says. Coming from a 2015 Ram 1500 5.7 that was an amazing truck. Hope this F150 serves me just as well.

As the owner of a 23 F150 King Ranch, I’m frustrated with a number of quality issues that I’ve never had on any other vehicle I’ve owned… body panels are not aligned and gaps not uniform , paint has orange peel and poor dealer service experiences are among the issues I’ve experienced. I wouldn’t recommend.

Dealer experiences I can see, but the body panel alignment, gaps and orange peel are hard to believe frankly. Every recent F150 I’ve seen is perfect in all those regards. The Tundra on the other hand…..that was a mess in the body department. Good luck, you spend that much money you deserve better.

It was cold and rainy when I took delivery…. I should have gave it a more thorough look over before taking it home. Ford fixed it under warranty. While at the dealer to address the fit and finish issues, oil changes, etc., I looked around and saw a few others w similar issues…most were ok, but a few were not. They’re were not doing well in the QC dept. when mine was manufactured, in January.

Reliability is an issue with all brands, and now it's price gouging on top of it. Today's market is a hope to get one that will run, if not the manufacturer will be paying for a lot fixing. Nothing is built with quality anymore, after it's only designed for a 5 year life span.

I have owned Ford trucks since 1980. Never any major problems. Some small repairs corrected same day they were taken in. I also do high mileage and I will buy another when tired of my 2020 Super Duty.

We bought a 2018 ford edge titanium with a 2.0L turbo and 28k miles. We have had nothing but issues with it. Turbo went out at 60k, flexplate broke shortly after that. 87k miles the turbo needed replacement again. Fast forward to just over 100k and the turbo is bad again. This time we are out of warranty and looking at $2200 to have it replaced. Called ford and they wont do anything. Turbo has a 2 year warranty but they wont replace it because the warranty is on the original part we replaced the first time and not the second one. We will never own another ford again.

And that's why dealerships typically only give a 36 mo warranty. If they truly felt their vehicle was built with quality components they would give 100k mile unlimited on everything on the vehicle as the basic warranty.

Great post....and timely. Loved my first ever Ford; a 2018 F150 Lariat SuperCrew Sport with 5.0 V8......UNTIL I discovered an excessive oil consumption issue. This is widespread with the 2018 - 2020 Coyote 5.0 V8. I had 67k a few months ago when I noticed it was using 2+ qts of oil in 3,500 miles....which is the mileage I always change my oil at, instead of the 7k miles Ford recommends. Had a tsb 'fix' for this issue applied and monitored the past 3,500 miles after a fresh dealer oil change (always use the dealer BTW)..... 2 qts low again. Online forums seem to point out the TSB doesn't work. Starting a dealer oil consumption test under the extended power train warranty Ford was nice enough to give me for free due to this issue...... But I doubt there is any real fix for this. We will see.... Probably my first and last Ford ever. 5.0 was supposed to be a tried and true engine....and that is why I chose it when I ordered it new.....turns out - it is junk!

Had the same issue with my 19 lariat. 5.0. Got rid of it. I figured if it was sucking that much oil I would have to do plugs more frequently and cats.
