The Pico also lets you browse the local network, so if you have a Windows file share on your computer, you can connect to that and directly stream a 3D or normal movie to the headset over wifi. I find this pretty handy, just sit on the couch and browse to your file and play. I have the Pico 3 Link, but same software. The built-in video player is pretty capable which was a very pleasant surprise for me. I'm also going to have to try Virtual Desktop for this when it comes out.

How is the compression? That's been a limiting factor for PCVR over USB or WiFi with Quest 2. I'd imagine Pico having it a bit more noticeable with the higher resolution lenses.

If it has a separate 3.5mm jack it would be amazing. Not being able to charge and listen (like in a sit down movie setting) is a pretty big detractor. And since latency is so important bluetooth for most things is off the table.

The Pico 4 has me really excited for competition in the VR market, but I'm honestly a little worried about the strap situation, and so few people have even mentioned the downsides of it other than you. Part of what made the Quest 2 so popular is the ability to switch out that strap when it breaks, you want a new one, or when your battery strap starts to degrade. It made it more approachable for consumers that want some security with their purchase, knowing so many things were interchangeable. I just really don't wanna find out that after, say, 1,000 hours of use the ratchet breaks on everyone's headstrap, with them all now out of warranty, forcing people to just junk the thing. Heck, even if we find their strap has the same issue that the original Quest straps had. Loving the Pico 4 and how it's looking thus far, and can't deny the usefulness of a battery bank in the back to counterbalance, but I'm just worried about the potential downsides here. Even just the fact that 3rd party strap manufacturers are completely left out in this headset's equation. Could have simply been a snap-on mechanism with metal magnetic contacts for power delivery, but alas, apparently not in their plans at the time. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens down the road for customers! Nice detailed review!

I have to admit the Pico is extremely compelling for me. I would consider myself to be a very casual VR player. I currently have an Odyssey 2 which I pick up from time to time. I tried the Quest 2 but returned it since the stock strap was so bad (I know I know - many different options out there, etc but as I mentioned I'm very casual and just really couldn't be bothered). The fact that this seems so much lighter and display being better is extremely compelling. Hope they make a US release possible.

We have quest 1,2 and this pico 4. Honesty speaking this Pico 4 is so far the best wireless headset we have tested. Much lighter in weight, much better resolution and tracking accuracy. Very nicely comfortable

As far as wireless... probably a good idea to wait for a Wifi 7 capable headset. As when paired with a wifi 7 router... wifi 7 will be able to push near 50Gbps theoretical, wifi 6e is currently capable of 5Gbps theoretical... so it should be quite good with low latency compressed streams, with even Ethernet itself being slower at 1Gbps rates. About half my home network is converted to 10GBe ... but my PC is still 1GBe only, next gen upgrade should fix that though.

@wespozo I don't have the 4 (yet?) but the Pico 3 does support using the headset while charging it simultaneously over USB-C. You could slip a battery pack into your pocket, and have a USB-C cable going up to the headset to power it. This would also work if you wanted to game more than the hours that this runs off the internal battery; get a 50000 mAh battery pack and you should be able to run this for a day. In fact, if you connect this to the PC via USB-C, I assume the PC sends power to the headset for longer gameplay sessions. The Pico 3 Link I have allows sending power over the Displayport cable also, if you plug a power supply into the port on the cable they include for "endless" play.

Hi Spirit! Damn, I get your confusion! Let me first ask, would you like to play standalone games or more PCVR games? The fact that the quest 2 is more polished is because they have almost a 2 year headstart. The pico software def needs some finetuning, but that is just a matter of time I believe. Perhaps with it out just a bit more. I will come back to you with a Q2 vs Pico 4 comparison!

Well, first of all, you can only buy Picos in some markets, like Europe and far east, so far. But the Pico 4 is considerably better from a technical point of view. The Quest does have some exclusive titles so far yes, but otoh Pico has started adding bigger titles to their store.

Wireless of course, I plan on getting a wifi6 router to be able to enjoy a perfect VR wireless experience. Another thing that really called my attention is BigscreenVR but I think that app is not supported on Pico 4 yet.

After years of playing oculus Rift (or at least own it,) I decided to give Pico 4 a try. My experience is very subjective and I've only had the rift to compare to. Personally it wasn't as amazing as I imagined it. My oculus rift imo has the best strap ever created and It almost feels like I'm not wearing a headset after a few hours. Pico 4 however felt stiff in the cushioning and it also revealed that I'm disfigured, because no matter what I did, the headset kept putting pressure on the top of my nose bone to the point it began to hurt. If I manage to put it in a spot where it doesn't hurt, I lost all clarity because it was too high up... Coming from regular gaming with 144hz and Oculus tethered experience, wireless is not the way to go for me I think. Too much latency and stutters, after I realized I had to buy a new router just to be able to access wireless. Unless its as fluid as tethered I can't do it. I'm a PCVR only fella and I have no experience with other headsets apart from rift but I also felt that the clarity was only in the center of the screen and completely blurry at the edges. Heard its not uncommon but never really experienced that on my rift (granted it was all pretty much blurry so might just not seen the difference XD). Looking down at my body in bonelabs it was just blur. No crisp boobs to play with DX

Best all round IMO , Pankake lenses are game changers for clarity, Light weight, but has some aspects that need adressing, Thge Face shield needs replacing with AMVR but thats cheap. the audio ports are nowhere near your ears (currently designing and 3d printing ear enclosured for it "Picoear" available soon.

But on the other hand, Pico is a complete package not depending on any external hardware, and works without a single wire, which is a big plus. While the promising display, better weight distribution, magnetic facial interface and precision ipd adjuster is a leap forward, the battery and sound controller being part of the headstrap is a massive turn off for me and prevents anyone from making an aftermarket/replacement headstrap if they don't like the default one.

Odd that they chose an IPD range of 62-72, this seems to be in the higher range and would likely make it uncomfortable for those in the lower range. Surely it would have made more sense to make it +/- 5 either side of the average IPD? Or maybe they did some research and found that people interested in VR would likely have a wider IPD for some reason?

I'm pretty sure it's a technical limitation since the lenses are bigger than e.g. on the Quest, and they can only go so far together before they touch.

I develop VR and XR products for with both the Quest 2 and index and I have an IPD of around 58 so this would be very uncomfortable for me to develop with.

@@jordanhogan8446 Mine is around 61mm... so probably closer to being comfortable than Quest 2 as I have to set the quest to 63mm. Sometimes I try to physically force the quest 2 to between the two lower settings.

Looks nice, only thing I wouldn't like would be the strap and with the battery being in the back it doesn't look like you'll be able to get third-party straps.

Yeah but the battery being in the back is so that it isn't front heavy. Plus the strap doesn't seem bad, especially compared to the default quest 2 strap.

@@musicimpact7120 ​ just means no bobo strap for extra battery life and comfort. The only way to extend battery would be pocketable packs and you are forced with the default strap permanently. Its just another thing to consider. I love customization and options

@@FNH8iT yes, I understand that. But you need to understand that they did that for weight balancing issues. The quest 2 has everything in the front which makes it pretty uncomfortable after a while. This one is way more comfortable because the weight is even and not front heavy.

is it possible to use DeoVR or Skybox vr player for watching movies? Can you watch movies straight from your pc harddrive? how long does the battery last, is it enough to watch a whole movie?

You don't really need either if you have local files, the built-in video player will play video straight over the network, streaming from a Windows file share. Works perfectly on the PIco 3 I have, and this seems to be an improved internal software version. Streaming from the web directly is more of a pain. But, Virtual Desktop is coming for this quite soon, also.

@@extectic i can accept the artifacting. Quest 2 has it as well. I just want to software and it's connectivity to be solid. I have constant issues with the quest 2 software. Random disconnects and losing tracking for no reason most of the time. I'm willibg to give the wireless dongle a chance but I already have a decent wifi 6 router (huawei ax3) and pretty decent wifi speed (450mb/s down speed). Everything is tethered but still get small micro stutters sometimes. So was wondering if the dongle can resolve this. But I'm fine with cable, I made my own pulley system.

Well, sadly Quest 2 still better because PICO Neo 4, you can not change the Head Strap, get warmer because the color pass trough and I don't hear yet if the controllers are Touch Controllers like the Quest 2 Touch controllers are better because mean they are able to track your fingers just with touched the controllers.

A good router is cheaper and more useful than the dongle. A good router will upgrade your entire home network and allow you to use Airlink to its full capacity.

@@sembalo1776 a router will also allow you to connect other devices to your network for uses such as file transfer. WiFi isn't just wireless internet :) Out of interest, do you only use mobile internet seeing as you don't have a home internet connection?

Hello. Thank you for this extensive but short review. I like videos like that - short but with a lot of info. I have one tiny question: do you know if the buttons or sticks on the controller have a touch detection - aka whether they're capacitive. These kind of buttons and sticks detect if you just touch them but not press them down. I run a community which is mostly about VRChat - and I'd love to recommend another headset than the Quest or Index - the Quest: some people have concerns because of Meta/Facebook - the Index is obviously quite expensive. Unfortunately only the Oculus Touch controllers and Index controllers currently have this feature.

The design of this looks good. The weight of a headset is not as important as weight distribution, and this looks like the load is split fairly evenly between back and front, so will feel far more comfortable. Also, same price as Quest, with Pro-strap included.

Re: Lack of an audio jack. Some people say to use Bluetooth for audio. However, I have never seen a Bluetooth headset that doesn't have significant latency. This will put the video and audio horribly out of sync. This is why Bluetooth headsets are not used for watching movies, videos or gaming. There are many videos on this subject, so it is not an isolated issue. Even if a set of headphones can use aptX, which is supposed to reduce latency, doesn't mean that Windows will choose to use the aptX codec. With no way to tell Windows which codec to use, even the best headsets can be limited to lower end codecs, which will mean significant latency.

I happen to have a steelseries arctis wireless pro, which doesn't use bluetooth, but is still wireless with very little to no latency. I would really advise it if that's what's bothering you.

From what Ive heard, community is already working on sideloading of any apk from Quest 2 to Pico. They just redirect API calls to different framework.

I bought one and returned a day later. Dealbraker for me is that the screen door effect is VERY noticeable for me. I come from a Rift CV1, that has HALF the resolution, and yes screen door effect is less on the Pico 4 but it was still there and different. Also, playing with the stream assistant and USB-C cable a lot of stuff wasn't working. Took me 3 hours to get sound. Hand gestures (yes the controllers have capacitive buttons and sticks) didn't work in Half Life Alix. The tracking was a lot worse than the CV1. So having a new headset, that is for me less fun than a 7 year old headset just doesn't cut it for me...
