I am a mma fighter and combat sports trainers always prefer body weights because we need power not strength we also need explosiveness and weights usually are a waste of time for us and sometimes make certain fighters sluggish body weights are preferred for power and free weights for strength
@FatManJackson
@FatManJackson 3 жыл бұрын
@@uziasif2425 yeah but weights themselves still dont exclude you from training explosive power. They can be very beneficial. I used to train MMA a couple of years aswell and we did for example sometimes load our squats with comfortable, but heavy enough weights to do jumping squats. It was not a static movement, but allowed us to train explosiveness in the legs, which can really help transfer power from the ground into our punch. Same goes for using 2 or 3 pound dumbbells as resistance weight to increase your striking speed. Also when it comes to the ground game you will need to have a strong grip and strength. Of course for finishing the job technique is more important, but to get someone down in the first place wrestlers do very much appreciate having enough strength to overpower the opponent to even get to that point. So like I said, you can not demonize one or the other and especially not when you talk about sports in general. And for people who just want to be healthy or have everyday strength both of these in combination are best. When you are relocating, you have to carry heavy furniture. When you have to catch a train, you have to run fast. Balance is everything.

Get a decent hiking backpack or a surplus army kit bag. The kind that have the back brace and belt. And make sure you can stand straight while wearing it. If you have to lean forward or slouch to bear the load then you're doing yourself more harm than good. Personally I just skip having to think about that sort of thing by using a weight vest for even distribution but the trade off is cost and eventually a lower weight cap if that's a major factor to you.

Although I prefer lifting, calisthenics is a great way to build muscle and athleticism. Training is important but there are no real gains without proper diet. I realized that after I started following my first meal plan. I found it on NextLevel Diet iirc. At first it was tough to eat an excessive amount of calories, but eventually I got used to it. Good diet is a game changer!!

Overexertion. Not enough rest time and doing same moves without variation for too long. Doing different moves enabled your body to build the "debt" back up. That is fairly common. Muscle grows at rest and resting days are one of the most important, and frustrating, parts of the training.

bro dont do that shit, do you know that you can lowr the degree of dificulty of EVERY calisthenics exercise? For example if standard pushups are too hard for you you, you can simply raise the surface where you put your hands, ie instead of putting your feet and hands on the floor, you put your feet on the floor and your hands on a table for example. Playing with things like that can lower or increase the difficulty of any bodyweight exercise pretty accuratelly. That being said, i personally think that the argument of "calisthenics is bad because you cant "add more weights" or remove them" is kinda flawed. Finally, i highly recommend the book "you are your own gym" to learn everything you need to know about different training formats for calisthenics.

+janet sotelo I know but whenever a calisthenics guy goes up against a bodybuilder in a competition the calisthenics guy usually owns at pull ups but slows down when doing weighted squats and bench press and the body builder catches up. Calisthenics makes you control body weight but they don't prepare you for controlling other weights heavier than yourself. I'm not saying you NEED weights to get really strong but even veteran calisthenics guys have many underdeveloped muscles because you can't do isolation movements with calisthenics

Doing various calisthenics exercises, a person can increase the strength of very local tissues. Calisthenics does bring out fibers which might have been dorment in lifting, even if you do every exercise in the book of free weight. In the book of calisthenics there are simply other exercises which target the same place, and where in calisthenics you don't get the tonnage, you compensate with muscle inconvinience and angles which stimulate the muscles to the limit as well.

I think Calisthenics has a kind of aesthetic to it that free weights exercises do not. I like the idea that I'm the master of my own body and being able to lift oneself is one way to demonstrate that mastery. I come from a bodybuilding background, but I will say that putting on more weight is not the only way to progress. Their are multiple different variables that can be manipulated, such as having a tempo i.e 4010. other examples are shorter rest periods per every week which makes the exercise harder as the sets progress because of fatigue. Even for bodyweight exercises you can add a tempo, shorter rest periods, superset and etc. It all comes down to how you periodize a program. :)

I understand what you're saying but can't you be more polite about it ? There is no need to put somebody in a category... I have seen skinny people with terrible form, I have also seen bodybuilders with terrible form... At the end of the day, when you don't know how to perform the exercise properly and when you use more weight than you can handle then you will fail ! Everybody fails actually.... There is a point in time when you start ego lifting than doing what's right for your body. But to get to the point, I love both calisthenics and free weights ! Calisthenics are a bit difficult if you're overwerweight but that's the beauty of it, you get to use your own weight ! From the other hand, free weights are mostly accessible by anyone. You get to choose the weight that you want to lift and if you are a pro you can go harder and heavier ! The problem with calisthenics is that when you master doing push ups and other exercise how can you get more gains ? I mean, when you are in the gym you can use heavier weights than the ones you can handle but what happens when you mastered most of the calisthenic exercises ?
@Tsiribreezes
@Tsiribreezes 8 жыл бұрын
***** so you mean that calisthenics don't build muscle like weight lifting does ? Yeah I understand that calisthenics work your form and your movement but what do you mean that they don't build muscle directly ? When I do pull ups, chin ups and push ups I find it more difficult to perform these exercises but the gains that I get are worthwhile ! And I completely agree with you, trainees will never reach a point where they can perform every calisthenic exercise, except if you are a pro or a gymnast that is... But that's my point, a normal person only does regular push ups, chin ups, pull ups... etc and at some point you will master these exercises and how will you move on ? You will keep doing the same routine or you will jump to weight lifting and become better ?
@Tsiribreezes

***** Sure, but I don't thing I will ever do handstand push ups. At least not in the level that I am right now... And well, not all people have the money to build a proper pull up bar or know places with pull up bars... I'm talking about thing you can do at home like push ups and at some point you will do your maximun reps so wouldn't you have to start lifting weights so you can build more muscle or will you repeat the same routine ? Eventually you will get tired of doing the same push ups every day... But yeah I agree that gymnasts perform better than bodybuilders, in my opinion they are also stronger in what they do.

I've spent the last 8 years going to the gym most of the year and spending summer by using the bars and going to the gym only rarely. I think it's important to note that for us people that love the gym, love working out and love being fit It is not a debate, exercises are exercises, in the end of the day if your goal is not being a profesional at something but you do it be the best version of yourself you will do both, I don't even see how you could be an overall atheltic person if you don't both lift free weights AND do body weight... However.. I feel It's important to note that what you described regarding free weights is more of a bodybuilding perspective, when in reality lifting weights is also olympic and power lifting, It's NOT just about building muscle, It's about building ATHLETICISM, SPEED, TECHNIQUE, STRENGTH, POWER, FLEXIBILITY, COORDINATION and so much more. Just thought to clear that up since you kind of painted lifting weights as this bodybuilding thing, when in fact calisthenics can be almost as effective at building muscle but are not even comparable when we talk about strength, power and speed.

I was a small kid. My dad always made me do calisthenics as a punishment. So, that’s what I grew up with. My physical stature stayed small but I packed a punch. I would be a target for a bully but I would destroy all the bullies in sports and PE. I believe calisthenics are way better that free weight. Free weight is good for looking big, but not that practical. First time I tried free weight was in Highschool. My coach would see me excel in pull-ups and push-ups, but I could barely lift the bar. Eventually, when I got the basis and knowledge of free weights,I was already leaving Highschool. I went back to doing only calisthenics and not one exercise became any easier. After calisthenics became to easy for me (I could do a set of 100 of most exercise with 2 breaks) I started adding weights to it. Weights could be a backpack while doing push-ups . It doesn’t have to cost much money, The most practical one would be calisthenics.

But yeah - strength within those sports are objective. The guy who can snatch 300lbs or whatever with good form is clearly stronger than the guy who can't, and the guy who can do a maltese on rings is evidently much stronger than someone who can't hold his weight on his hands in any progression. Cheers.

I liike switching between both: During winter time or when outside is limited due to weather or time schedule, I focus on free weights at the gym, try to increase power and muscle by doing heavy weight lifting. Bad side is that over time (5-6 months) your body starts to hurt a bit, muscle need more time to recover and your overall nervous system and even joints start to feel exhausted due to the higher pressure At that time i switch to calestetics (mostly during early spring and summer). Some say muscle growth is very limited here, but i think this is a good way to "relax" your whole body and have it recover faster between sessions and pain from the heavy weights is gradually also lifted. Also this type of training cements your gains and you get more used to the muscle you have now It is becoming your new basement for when you go back to weight lifting By doing this, I am able to grow steadily, not super quick, without suffering overtraining from heavy weights or undertraining by doing only calestetics

Way I've always seen and experienced it, calisthenics are a slower build of muscle, but you work your muscles in conjunction, while lifting builds muscle faster, but if you don't vary it properly then doing certain activities will be held up cause certain muscles are strong while others are neglected. Doing both helps keep everything fairly balanced.

You are somewhat right and somewhat wrong. If you'd stimulate the power muscles often and eat big, you will get bigger. If you'd stimulate stabilizers often (*relatively*) and other muscles which don't tend to grow a lot, and you eat like you always did (say you're skinny), you won't go up in weight. Do your research. Mass growth and big-approach muscle building is perfectly doable in calisthenics.

Well, as a XC and track runner in high school and into the military, I always focused on running and calisthenics. Body weight training with barely any actual gym time. I was in super shape, just not strong looking. Nice abs, but not big at all. 150-165 lbs during those years. Now, I'm 25, a Veteran and started lifting. I was tired of seeing myself in the mirror (for what the pandemic and laziness and mild depression did to me, flabby, no abs, not built etc. Now I go to the gym 5-7 times a week. And I run as well. Sometimes run 2 miles to the gym, then work out, then run home. But yeah, im doing the weight lifting cuz I wanna be bigger. A leaner. And better looking. Its a huge confidence booster knowing that when you walk into a place, bar or whatever and knowing that right now, you are in great shape and ppl notice. May not be the biggest or hottest person in the room, but I know I'm one of them. Thats a great feeling. And instead of going home after work and thinking "what am I gonna eat tonight? What am I gonna play on xbox for hours and hours? Nope. Nowni think, "what am I gonna do at the gym today? Can I squeeze in a run before the sun goes down first? PS. I signed up for a town 5k race. 1,000 plus ppl ran it. I came in 7th after not running a 5k in years. Not an amazing time, only 21:50 for a time. But hey, I'm doing it and happy I did. Its summertime almost and I can't wait to get bigger and stronger. Maybe will find a beautiful, funny nerdy girl who won't leave me without explanation this time, but thats a different story. And I'm starting to ride my motorcycle. That's just cool. Is got flames on it 🔥🔥. Rant over. Sorry haha love you guys

if you wanna grow stronger, you really need to stimulate your BRAIN more with heavier more challenging forces. doing more sets and more reps won't make you stronger. you'll just get more endurance. so what if you become heavier? by then your muscles can handle heavier weight as long as your strength improves proportionally to your size. i added 90lbs weights (i'm 180, and goal is pulling up 1.5x my bodyweight) on my pullups and it helped me achieve front lever faster AND made my back even larger. i agree that you still need to add weight if you also want aesthetics with strength.
@kblkbl
@kblkbl 8 жыл бұрын
No it's not, ca5ualm3dia. doubling or tripling your routines when you're already used to that weight only makes it much more of a cardio workout than an anaerobic activity. The whole point of calisthenics being very good is that NO ONE who never did anything in their life is used to lifting as much as their own weight initially. Even more because there's no problem in getting bigger if you retain your mobility. Just look at jujimufu or clarence0, both 100kg+ monsters who lift insane weights and do a lot of tricking. How is that possible? Because they never left their tricking roots for the sake of getting bigger, what resulted in a sinergy between both worlds.

One more thing, people who only free weight take for granted what exercises they can do. Today at the gym I saw one man bench press it seems like 15 sets while I did a whole body workout with weights during that time. The creativity you use in Bodyweight workouts carry’s over into the weight room

To sum it up: Body weight exercises (calisthenics) tones you and strengthens you more practically... Good if you want to be toned and strong, with good control over your body, but not particularly bulky. You can also add weight (vests, arm and ankle weights etc etc) to turn yourself into a complete beast. Free weights make you bigger and you can lift heavy stuff. Good if you want to...well...be bigger and stronger. Bottom line is, figure out your goals, see what you want to do. A guy that only lifts probably won't be able to do a human flag or planche pushup, and a guy that only does calisthenics probably won't be benching 350. If you want to be able to do both, you can always lift AND do body weight stuff. It's not complicated. You just have to do it.

Adaptability on amount of weight used: calisthenics require you to move your whole body, but with free weights you can lift as little as a 2lb weight. For fat and or very out of shape people, it is safer and easier to start with free weights cause you can start with much lower weights, well within that person's ability, with little risk of injury; whereas with calisthenics may be dangerous because they are just way too much strain to start off with cause you have to start moving at least the bodies whole mass. You need to have a minimum capacity to move to do calisthenics safely: and that is the number one disadvantage to them. A 400lb out of shape person will never be able to do a single pull or push up without tearing something. Even a 250lb person may get too hurt and require too much of a recovery period to keep with an calisthenics program. Free weights in supersets with careful form is the easiest and safest way to start from very poor fitness and a lot of fat to reasonable physical fitness; provided a person is willing to start with really small "whimpy" weights and work their way up slowly and steadily. Most very out of shape and or fat people can still lift a 2lb weight without injury, so they can at least start their fitness goals with freeweights; and have short enough recovery/rest periods to make exercise a regular routine, which makes it more likely they will stick with it. Because muscles can be isolated too, free weights would allow a person to exercise every day, and work it into a regular routine that will improve their metabolism, without risk of injury. (Example, legs, and back, M, W, F; arms and abs+obliques T, T, S; with Sunday off.) Not sure if you've heard that reasoning before, and I would love to hear your thoughts on it.

There are physical limits to how much weight you can reduce while doing calisthenics; in the end the person is still saddled with how much their body weighs. Yes, you can do push-ups on your knees, but there is an extreme physical limit on how stress of the person's body weight you can remove during a calisthenics exercise. I can tell you from personal experience, you are underestimating just how much stress can be put on the body when a sedimentary person starts to try to move their own bulk. Especially in the case of an injury. I was saying that the big disadvantage to calisthenics is, you cannot take a person's body mass out of the exercise equation; and for many people (and willing to bet a lot of people turning to KZbin for exercise advice) that is a huge problem: a problem so great they may never be able to overcome it! Now yes, when one can safely and reliably move their own bulk, calisthenics can help with balance, coordination, and learning good muscle/skeletal alignment; which can incredibly reduce the risk of injury from day to day activities, and that is a huge plus; and for that reason alone I think some measure of calisthenics should be included with every long term fitness plan, even if most of it involves free weights. But a fat person can blow out their knees trying to walk, but are at little risk from using ankle weights, ect. Free weights give far more control over the stress placed on the body: and that can mean the difference between not being able to exercise, being discouraged to the point of giving up, or worse yet, getting injured; vs actually being able to stick with a program and seeing results. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, and that level of control over the stress on the body, was something not discussed in the video, and something worth debating and talking about.

Perhaps the difference in the level of control over the weights may not be as great as I originally thought, but my point still stands. It's pretty easy, using free weights, to control how much and track the stress a specific muscle is under; allowing for incredibly minor amounts of stress to extreme muscle building amounts of weight. This control also allows for greater ease and ability to control the rate of progression of an exercise program. With calisthenics, the person's body is always going to be there, and any change in how an exercise is done will create a step in the amount of stress the person is exercising against. You can go from pushing against a wall while standing, that's, lets say, 10% body weight as stress, to doing push ups on your knees at let's say 50% body weight as stress. You can't just go from 10%-15% for example, you end up jumping from 10% to 50% in this example. Now, there may be more methods to deal with some of that, but how many people can be familiar with all the various forms of just push ups, let alone all the other calisthenics? That's a crap ton of learning, research, training, and you still can't make tiny, incremental, linear, and consistent changes from one workout to the next (again, each change in form makes a "step" in the graph of how much stain a person is exercising against). Now, calisthenics has many amazing advantages over freeweights, and especially machines: but it doesn't give as much control and ease of control over how much stress a person is exercising against; and the control that is available requires a lot of research and training which makes it inaccessible. I have seen some physical therapists start off new patients with some form of freeweight or bands for that reason: and then eventually progress to functional calisthenics. My father went through much the same process over a torn shoulder. Baring a sever structural or motor issue, there is always a way to find a weight that someone can actually lift; not true of calisthenics. It's also damn easy to write down weight, reps, and sets vs reps, sets, and the exact detail of the form and how much a person is leaning one way or another.

Aye, but you just reiterated some of the points I was making as the advantage of weights over calisthenics: weights give a greater amount and ease over control. I once was active and exercising regularly; and I started that from a state of being terribly out of shape and unhealthy. When I started, I absolutely could not even do one push up, and the attempt left me with a lot of pain, reminiscent of muscle tares. But I could do some light dumbells. Started with 2 and 5 pound weights and worked my way up. And yes, it was a little embarrassing to have to use pink 2lb weights at the gym, but it beat painful muscle tares. Eventually I got to the point where I could do push ups and other calisthenics, and did a lot of them for toning: though it was hard to be able to work out some muscles, especially some groups in my shoulders. The point is not which exercise should be the only approach taken in all cases cause it's the hands down best: I was just trying to say one difference and advantage of one over the other for very specific circumstances. I was a man who couldn't do a single pushup without doing physical damage to myself, and thus wouldn't have been able to stick with a calisthenics program: but I was able to lift a rinky dink dumbbell and get started exercising! Free weights gave me enough control to slowly increase the challenges I was putting my muscles under until I gained the ability to actually move my body! Calisthenics has many advantages, many, many advantages; so don't take it that I'm disrespecting it or saying it's rubbish. After starting with dumbbells and progressing to a certain point, I did switch over to calisthenics for ease of access, to improve body function/balance, and to keep working on tone (bad back, I never tried to bulk, just tone to improve skeletal alignment). But there was no way I could start with it; and for some muscles, it was simply easier to use a dumbbell to work them out as apposed to trying to do calisthenics. And working out a calisthenics program was hard: being ADHD, and depressed, I needed a daily workout to work into a schedule for sake of consistency. Consistent habits were imperative! It was hard to work out two separate calisthenic workouts to allow for each muscle to get an rest period (an M, W, F workout, and an T, T, S workout with Sunday rest). With a bad back and other issues, I couldn't risk over-training. With freeweights, planning to hit the gym daily, but letting muscles have rest days, is much easier, in addition to how much control there was over how much stress each muscle got. Calisthenics is cheaper for gear (usually), can be done in more places, and is easier to set up to do then free-weights (mostly, any empty space with an optional mat will let a person do a very wide range of calisthenic exercises). Calisthenics also helps improve balance and function movement in a person more then freeweights. Calisthenics also is great for toning muscles as to promote skeletal alignment, and thus can be great for people with back issues. But calisthenics does not leave a person with total control over how much stress they put their muscles under; that is a factor of a person's body mass. Freeweights does lend to that kind of precise control.

It is to each their own. My goal wasn't to bulk; at 260lb with a bad back, more weight was the last thing I needed! But my muscles were strained and could not heal if subjected to daily exercise. Calisthenics does seem ideal for toning, which was my sole goal; the more toned the muscles, the more they help to keep the skeleton in proper alignment. Specifically for me, that meant my vertebrae where they belonged. But my muscles were to weak to start with Calisthenics, and it took a bit of research to finally be able to design a program that didn't work muscles two days in a row, something I desperately needed to heal and recover. So my point stands, free weights are much easier to control for how much stress they put a specific muscle under, and was very easy to also control the increase in intensity of the workouts.

I do both of them. I like calisthenics because I find some skills like the planche as pretty sick for me, or doing a handstand pushups felt like your an anime character working out. Also, weighlifting because I am not seeing much progress in my body just from doing calisthenics alone. I want those fast gains so I could feel more confident about myself. It's literally just your personal opinions that matters, do not care about others and just do what you love and like.
